Getting Ready For School (open)
School shopping with a very opinionated five-year-old was an experience Sydney would like to forget, mutant power aside. It had been a constant battle for the past three hours. Zoey loved being out and loved going shopping, it was just her taste in clothes. Everything the child picked out had been black. It wasn't any place strange where she picked up her taste in fashion, but did everything have to be black?

It just made school shopping VERY difficult.

In the end most of Zoey's clothes were black, but Syd had managed to get the child to agree on some clothes with other colors in them.

Syd sighed as the front door closed behind her. She dropped the numerous bags she carried in the foyer. First something cold to drink, then she'd come back and grab the bags to put the clothes away. This year Syd had bought her at least double what they had bought last year. It was nice to have a good paying job and to be able to provide for her daughter. Zoey's birthday was in a week and Syd would be able to make it the best birthday of Zoey's life. She just had to find time to go shopping without Zoey.

She made her way into the kitchen in search of that cold drink.

"Halbjorn!" she squealed and stopped chasing Zelbar to run up to him. The dog ran up to him as well. "I am. First grade. I have to go all day now."

"Aye, so I hath heard. And I understand that thy mother hast tried to prepare thee well, and thou hast Aslief to aid thee... but there art some things Aslief dost not know well. Tell me first, art thou well liked? Hast thou found difficulties with bullies?"

"Tis most fortunate then that thou hast such fortune, but with children, it ne'er lasts. Tis important if thou'rt going to remain as popular that thou canst prove thineself to thy peers quickly, else they think thee weak and that they canst take advantage of thee."

Zoey was quiet for a moment as she thought about what he said. They talked differently than other people did. "Oh. Mom said that I shouldn't let other kids tell me what to do or let them make me do something."

"Aye, thy mother ist most wise. She wishes thee to become a good leader instead of a follower. I wilt show thee how to ensure the other children doth not make thee do anything thou dost not wish to, and how instead to ensure e'en the strongest amongst them follows thy lead instead."

"Okay," she said. Though she wasn't sure what he meant exactly, it couldn't be bad. They were all her friends and Mom liked them. "What are we going to do?"

"I am going to show thee how to be a strong leader, and prevent challenge amongst the ranks of thy peers, that when lessons come, thou wilt always take the lead and hold the respect of thine peers. Come now to the training room, and I shalt begin to teach thee how to discourage bullies and gain respect without truly injuring thy peers. We wilt need space for this, howe'er."

"Okay," she said and held up a hand. It sounded okay and didn't seem like anything Mom would say no to.

Halbjorn spends a couple hours teaching Zoey how to fight without really hurting anyone, so as to quickly discourage bullying and make sure she has the respect of her peers, and can prove herself a leader right away.

There will be no biting and scratching for any kid he can help.

"Aye, twas my pleasure. Tis my wish that thou do well in school, and earn the respect of thine peers. Now remember, tis important... at thy first recess, find the largest child in thine age group there, punch them in the eye. Twill get their guard up - then the ear clap to disorient them, a punch to the gut wilt double them o'er, and finally, the uppercut to take them down. If thou canst prove thou hast no fear, and can quickly take down the largest of the children, no one wilt question thee further. And then at lunch thou canst demand to be served first as a sign of thy station."

"Aye, for tis poor form to appear to be bullying those weaker than thyself, or to punish those who follow thee violently. A strong leader doth not need do such things. But tis important to prove thy strength o'er those who wouldst be bullies themselves, or think they hath station merely because they art bigger than thee."

"Aye, most oft', bullies simply assume they wilt not be challenged. And thus people art afraid, and they become poor leaders. And surely when thou didst not know how to show thy strength o'er them, thy mother didst not wish to see thee hurt. But now thou knowst how to quickly take a larger child down and prove thy strength and authority. One canst ne'er count upon teachers or trainers to stop bullies - they themselves art looking for those with the ability to stand up for themselves. To interfere too much wouldst but teach children to be afraid and hide behind others - there art times thou must needs be able to prove thyself and take charge."

"Truth, it doth depend a great deal. First thou must show some aptitude for't. Not e'eryone canst use magic. And once thou hast shown such talent, then thou must prove to a teacher thou wilt work and study hard enow... e'ery sorceror and sorceress hast many who wish to learn from them, and most wilt take but an apprentice or two e'ery century. T'will take great dedication, and continual proof that thou art truly dedicated to learning."
