Getting Ready For School (open)
School shopping with a very opinionated five-year-old was an experience Sydney would like to forget, mutant power aside. It had been a constant battle for the past three hours. Zoey loved being out and loved going shopping, it was just her taste in clothes. Everything the child picked out had been black. It wasn't any place strange where she picked up her taste in fashion, but did everything have to be black?

It just made school shopping VERY difficult.

In the end most of Zoey's clothes were black, but Syd had managed to get the child to agree on some clothes with other colors in them.

Syd sighed as the front door closed behind her. She dropped the numerous bags she carried in the foyer. First something cold to drink, then she'd come back and grab the bags to put the clothes away. This year Syd had bought her at least double what they had bought last year. It was nice to have a good paying job and to be able to provide for her daughter. Zoey's birthday was in a week and Syd would be able to make it the best birthday of Zoey's life. She just had to find time to go shopping without Zoey.

She made her way into the kitchen in search of that cold drink.

He shrugs. "I hath a few coins of our realm. Surely gold ist still valuable, if we canst trade it for coin of the realm. And the Avengers hath been most helpful, surely we canst get some aid... but it must remain a surprise."

"Perhaps thou shouldst talk to Simon Williams about exchanging gold for coin. He wouldst be most likely to know. When were thou wanting to go on this quest?"

"Within the next few days. The child's birthday ist but a week away. A selection must be made, and then it canst be delivered 'pon the day and we canst then keep it hidden until tis time for the presents."

"Aye, it ist a good plan, brother. I wilt ready a stall. Didst thou find a horse trader?"

"Nay, we wished to bring thee along in selecting a good one. Thou and Aridis art both better trainers and riders than I, and thou'rt a good judge of horses. We do not wish to get her aught but the best."

Svalin sighed. Halbjorn was always the impulsive one. "I wilt find a trader nearby and we canst go look at their stock." Too bad they couldn't get back to Asgard. She knew a few people who raised the finest stock in all of the nine worlds.

"I thought thou wouldst be up for this, mine thanks. I wilt tell Aridis thou hast joined in our search for this gift."

Svalin nodded. "Doth not forget this boon when I art in need of a boon from thee, brother."

Another headbutt from Tryggvi and she pulled out a sugar cube from a small pouch. "Methinks Tryggvi wouldst enjoy company that doth not try to grab his tail or pounce."

He looks slightly confused at that, but nods.
"Sister, tis mine oath to trade mine life for the safety of Asgard, and that includes thee. Thou'rt the oldest and truest heir to the throne of Asgard of the line of Thor. Ne'er wouldst I deny thee aught that wast in mine power to give, and I wouldst ask naught in exchange. Thou hast but to ask, and tis thine... I simply thought thou wouldst enjoy aiding us in giving a proper present to Zoey. And twould indeed give thy mount good company."

Svalin nodded. She knew he meant every word. "Asleif wouldst beg to differ," she said with a smile. Contention for being the true heir ran high between Svalin and her half-sister. "I hast thought of giving young Zoey a sword and shield appropriate to her size. Perhaps thou canst help me forge them."

"Aslief ist younger than thee, and Asgard hast always been ruled by warrior kings. The mayst beg whate'er she wishest, thou'rt the true princess of Asgard, and none shalt say thee nay save those who wouldst answer to me.... and aye, a sword and shield canst indeed be done. Knowst thee the crest of her house?"

"Aye, brother, warrior kings. Thou'rt more likely to sit on the throne of Asgard than me. There'rt many who desire not to see a woman ruling Asgard. I art content to be a valkyrie and defend the Golden Realm with mine sword and mine life."

She shook her head.

"Nay, I knowest not of the crest of her house."

That gets a laugh. "T'will ne'er happen, sister mine. I am no warrior king, the shirt of the bear-jherk marks me as one of the unwashed savages who art oft nearer to trolls than gods. I wear it proudly, but ne'er shalt it be the garb of kings. Thou'rt the rightful heir, and those who think thee a woman because of thy birth shalt find thee a warrior born."

"Thou'rt the eldest of the male children. Thou wilt be king after father. Aridis and I wilt most likely be married off to secure an alliance or end a war. 'Tis the path of female children." Asleif would be the exception. Even Father realized that Asleif is not wife material.

"Bah, Aridis mayhap... and when she learns she ist expected to take but one man to bed, she wilt make life very difficult for many people. But thou'rt no one's wife. Thou wilt need a wife thyself as surely as did thy birth-mother. Best thou shouldst start seeking out eligible women thou wouldst not mind raising the children of the Queen of Asgard. The day thou didst take up the path of the sword, twas destined to be. Asgard ist safest in thine hands, and mine gift makes me suited to but one thing... and that ist not guiding the realm."

"E'en thou knowest that I wilt marry if Father or Grandfather doth order it. I hath no choice."

It was useless to continue this conversation. They have had it many times in the past and would have it many more times in the future. Svalin knew her duties to family and realm.

"On the morrow we wilt seek a horse for young Zoey."

"And thou knowst just as well that order will ne'er come. Thou wilt marry thy choice of stock to produce strong heirs and find a fine wife for thineself. But aye, on the morrow then. Truly, I canst hardly wait to see the child's face 'pon receiving her present."

"Aye, and t'will mean she must take some time away from copying Aslief to learn to care for the animal properly. E'en if she ist destined to become a sorceress, responsibility ist ne'er a poor lesson. Methinks twas part of the Lady Sydney's hopes in giving me this list. After Disneyland, surely she canst not think we wouldst e'er try to help her daughter imitate pale, hapless princesses?"

"Aye. Wouldst not do the child well to be like Asleif and those princesses," she agreed. "Methinks the Lady Sydney wouldst prefer her daughter to be strong and independent."

"Indeed, and a'ready, she imitates mine sister quite closely. They only just returned from procuring her clothing for school... twas nigh all black. Regardless... I shalt get to work designing a sword and shield... thou wilt need to learn their crest for the shield. I wouldst offer, but such research ist beyond my knowledge of letters. But I wilt prepare much of the crafting so that thou canst concentrate on thy training, and seeking a proper spring foal."

"Thou'rt a good brother, Halbjorn. E'en if thou refuses to learn to read letters."

Svalin shook her head. She knew he was capable of learning how to read, but he refused to learn.

"Perhaps for Yule, I wilt get proper clothes for young Zoey. Black ist not the only color for clothes."

"I canst sign mine own name. But I am neither sorceror nor woman... I hath no need to crawl through dusty tomes, nor to ponder the law. I hath most of the great stories memorized and am working on the others whene'er I canst hear them told. Though this world seemst to carry no such tradition... at the local pubs and bars, e'eryone keeps to themselves and muses silently o'er their weak drink."
Most disappointing discovery, that.

"Agreed. There ist time enow before Yule, we couldst procure her a full and proper wardrobe."

"I hath ne'er the patience nor the interest. I know our ways and tales, tis what ist expected. I hath three sisters, and all of thee wert trained in letters and law."
This is another of those discussions that usually ends about the same way. At least they agree on most things.
"Most surely. Mayhap at least light chainmail, in case she hast no sorceror's gift, or wishest to learn thine arts instead."
