To tell the truth, it hurt my pride: the 'groom' was prettier than the bride.
She'd never really pictured this happening. Of course, she'd married off her dolls as a girl, but the idea of her wedding had always brought with it the idea of really settling down with one guy, which had never been much on her agenda. This, of course, was different. This was Svalin. And she loved Svalin, and honestly wanted to be there for her and be a family with her. And while there would be sacrifices involved, it wasn't the same as Really Settling Down. A platonic marriage that still came with a fancy party. Nothing wrong with that!

Her parents had been brought up to Asgard, along with the Avengers and the Defenders.

The first royal wedding in a generation was the Event of the Season, with quite a bit of bustle about it.

...And the dress was going to be perfect.

But first, Spa day with Mom and the Mothers-in-law --two of them. Oh gosh.

She hoped Svalin was okay.

Svalin smiled and took the cup of mead. She held it aloft. "To the All-Father," she said toasting her grandfather as was tradition. Svalin took a drink from the cup and passed it to Vernique for her to drink from it.

Odin stands for the toast, accepting the praise that is his due, then he speaks again.

"I thank thee. And if thy wife and thee hath time, I needst speak with thee in privacy, if thou wilt attend me, granddaughter."

And once Vernique's drunk, she'll nod and go along with Svalin.

"At once, Lord Odin," Svalin said with a bow and took Vernique's hand as they followed.

Odin steps into a side room where they have some privacy, summoning his Vizier as well.

"Thou hast proven thyself a true princess of Asgard... but thy condition... wast not forseen. We must take this opportunity to study this event and consult the future... before we name thee a goddess of the realm."

Svalin squeezed Vernique's hand. This was normal, almost routine for Svalin, but she imaged that for Vernique it could be a bit unsettling.

"If thou deem it necessary, my lord. We hath no objections."

This takes a lot longer than expected. After a few spells and divinations, consulting texts, the scrying pool and Odin's well, and much more, Odin and his advisor disappear for over an hour, instructing the two to wait.

When they return, both normally stoic individuals look somewhat disconcerted.

Odin settles in, the one eye settling on his oldest grandchild. "Thy son... hast the chance to change everything. Everything. For good or ill... he mayst be a greater doom than any we hath seen... but through the two of thee, and thy child... there ist hope for Asgard... all of Asgard. For this... we hath decided to declare thee the Goddess of Hope."

Svalin blinked in surprise. Goddess of Hope? Not what she had been expecting, though she did know that Asgard needed hope as much as Migard did.

"I art honored, Lord Odin," she said with a deep bow. "Our son wilt be raised to be an honorable person and bring glory to the Golden Realm."

Vernique was really getting worried at how long this was taking.

Goddess of Hope, huh? That was adorable.

"Right," Vernique says. Pause. "What was that about greater doom? I understand the possible game-changer thing as a general concept, but... doom?"

Odin nods grimly. "While he mayst bring hope, the life of the young God of the Sun shalt ne'er be an easy one. Soon, word of this prophecy shalt extend beyond these walls. Our enemies hath diviners too. They shalt try to take him or kill him... and if Hela or the Dark Elves take the child, he shalt be doom to Asgard, and the triumph of death. The sun shalt ne'er rise upon the field of Ragnarok, and ne'er again, bathing the world in darkness as the dead and the denizens of the dark reign supreme, with a dark prince at the head of their legions. Asgard shalt be but the first to fall... Midgard soon after.

This ist why tis not a joyous occasion in its own right. He mayst be savior, a victorious warrior bathed in sunlight, fire, and magical wards provided by all of our sorcerors... and with it, the strongest among us...

Or he mayst be the doom of all."

"Of course. Thou wilt be returning to Midgard when this is o'er. Much as I wouldst like to place thee, and thy child, under guard, the longer our enemies do not know anything hast changed, the longer they wilt not be looking too hard at thee. And there, thou wilt be further from many of them, harder to divine."

"Asgard couldst provide no better guard than that of mine siblings and the Defenders," Svalin said. "Each of mine siblings are among the best of Asgard's sons and daughters and the Defenders art among Migard's best warriors."

"If we may hath thine leave and return to the wedding feast?"

"It wilt be as so," Svalin said and bowed once more before returning to the party with Vernique. It was time to talk to their guests and hear her brother tell of her adventures. Highly exaggerated of course.

Odin returns with the others, and moves back to his throne at the head of the great table.

"Rejoice, all warriors of Asgard... mine eldest granddaughter hast proven herself worthy to become one of the True Aesir... raise thy cups, and salute the Goddess of Hope!"

The announcement is greeted with a great roar, and, if anything, even more raucous celebration.

Asgardian weddings are not the same as Christian weddings in many ways. Their tradition of 'the best man' is different. He is to be the armed person protecting the bride, since the bride and groom exchange blades and go largely unarmed save at specific points.

There is also no simple, brief speech. Instead, his job is to boast, and to relate the legend of the groom... his sister.

And so he begins, deep enough into his cups even for him, full of enchanted liquor to hit even the most invulnerable stamina... making the tale all the more rambling and entertaining to be sure.

Some of the touch points seem reasonable enough. Defense against the legions of the dead. Giants slain. The wildly exaggerated story of her first dragon... as if to indicate that there were many more, and that was just a stepping stone.

And then comes the wild and expected exaggeration... the tale of the next dragon, and the next. Tales of maidens rescued (and bedded), the fairest of which, of course, is his sister's new wife... whose beauty he extolls upon just as much as he verifies her absolute virtue - after all, rescuing maidens is far more dramatic and traditional.

Though he's not the storyteller Aridis is, it still goes on for two hours, including answering questions, losing track (intentionally or no is hard to tell) so he can go back and edit details to make them even bigger. Somewhere in the process the Lady General has saved Asgard a couple times virtually solo, and in marrying Vernique, she's breaking the heart of thousands of other ladies throughout both Asgard and Midgard.

Throughout, his drinking horn is refilled (and re-emptied) a few more times over, once more before he finally finishes and salutes the new couple.

"To Svalin... all hail the Goddess of Hope!"

It's official. Halbjorn is the most adorable sexy brother-in-law imaginable.

Vernique can't stop giggling, applauding. Svalin going after more and more dragons is only inaccurate due to opportunity. Vernique as a modest and innocent maiden is hilarious.

Vincent smiles as he joins in the cheering. "To Lady Svalin!" Whatever the friction between the two of them, it was a good sentiment, and Halbjorn's speech is infectious in its cheer.
