Call to Duty (Odin, Halbjorn, Svalin)

Sigurdur Hogunson returned to the Golden City the moment the messenger found him. The All-Father demanded his presence immediately and Sigurdur's mind raced with the implications. He was not a wise man, and therefore did not know why the Lord of Asgard needed him. Questions arose in his mind during his ride to Odin's hall, but no answers presented themselves.

He hoped that he had not displeased his lord and master.

He arrived at the hall and was admitted without further word. No one spoke to him, but their glances asked the same question that stuck in Sigurdur's mind.

Why?

When he reached Odin's throne, Sigurdur stopped at a respectable distance and slammed his fist to his heart, taking a knee and kneeling before his liege.

"I, Sigurdur Hogunson, present myself to thee, my King. How may I serve Asgard this day?" he asks in greeting.

Had it been anyone else Svalin would have chastised them for daring to touch her without permission, but she had known Sigurdur since they were children. She smiled at the concern.

"I oft dream of mine son and what couldst be. If it ist to come to pass I wilt haft to kill mine son."

"Sigurdur, we hath known each other since we wert children and thou used to just called me Svalin. I wouldst like thee to call me that again."

"Aye, Lad--aye, Svalin." Sigurdur says, correcting himself.

"Take heart, Svalin. While I know nothing of thy son's father, I know of thee. Thou art the Goddess of Hope and a warrior of Asgard. There art a small, small few who couldst be a better of example for thy son.

Dreams tell us many things, but not all things." Sigurdur says quietly.

"Thou'rt most kind, Sigurdur. I doth appreciate thine words of confidence and assurance."

She smiled at him and then continued to lead him up to her sleeping chambers. "These art mine sleeping chambers." The room is spartan in decoration. No pictures on the walls, but there was one on the nightstand next to her bed. Various weapons leaned against one of the walls and a pair of boots stood at the foot of the bed.

Sigurdur did his best not to look at the picture on the nightstand; he didn't want be accused of prying, but he did step inside and take a look around, just to make certain he knew how the room was laid out. Someone might think it best to try to attack Svalin /in/ her room, though he smiled as he imagined the fate such a person would likely receive.

"Thou keeps a room after mine own heart. Little needed or asked for and can be readily moved at notice." Sigurdur says in appreciation, as he looks around again, this time, his eyes lingering on the picture before turning back to her.

"With thy permission, I wilt begin mine watch now. Please rest and alert me if thou hast need of anything. I wilt be outside the door." Sigurdur says.

Svalin smiled and a little red touched her cheeks. "I art not one for trinkets or possessions outside of mine sword, mine armor and mine horse. I hath a wife to deal with the rest."

"Aye. I feel the same. When we die, there wilt be no need of anything other than thine weapons and armor. When Ragnarok comes, all that shalt matter is who stands beside thee when the All-Father's horn is sounded.

It wilt be glorious." Sigurdur smiles.

"I wilt not take up thy time further, Svalin. Sleep well." he says, turning to go.

Svalin smiled. "Aye it wilt be. Thank thee, Sigurdur. I will see thee on the morrow. Good eve to thee."

"Good eve to thee. If thou needst anything, call out and I will come." Sigurdur says.

With that, he takes up his post before her door.
