Acclimation.
When she spent time in private with Hajime there was no issue with his limited understanding of contemporary culture.  When they were alone Kikuya and Hajime understood each other perfectly as her very traditional training matched up with the world he knew.  It was when they were with the others or in public that things became ever so slightly more complicated.  There were simply things that Hajime had no frame of reference for.  Kikuya felt it was her duty to assist in helping him understand.  It would make his daily life easier.  That was important to her.  One afternoon Kikuya decides to correct this and she shows up at the offices with three large shopping bags in tow--dressed in street clothes.

"I have always heard it that there are two great stories of society. That of war, and that of art. That which is beautiful tells its own story... tells us what a civilization is about and what it values... that which is beautiful may require protection time and again, the artisan is not expected to be a warrior... but the artisan gives the warrior something worth coming home to, and worth protecting.

You were made the super-geisha in a time of war, trained because of war, and you are very good at it. But I do not think that is what is in your soul... nor is it all there is to your story, or even nearly."

"Hajime-sama, if it were not for war I would not be alive today. Not with what I have seen and what I have endured." Her voice is uncharacteristically solemn.

"I do not dispute that. War is a part of your history, but it is not all that you are."

"I am quite glad that you think so." She smiled at him.

"Of course, you are skilled in the arts of war, but it is only the beginning of your skills. And you have been proving an exemplary teacher."

"You're an easy student, Hajime-sama. Eager to learn, happy to listen. I am more than deeply honored that you permit me to serve you."

There might, might have been the very slightest of color to her cheeks at his polite flattery.

"The honor is mine. Where I come from, the service of a geisha for a night is a significant reward. Exclusive service is reserved for the greatest... you honor me each day, even if I still do not entirely understand why this is merited... but I am far from complaining." he responds amidst a bow.

"The teaching is also very helpful. I a not sure how I would get along without you, and hope to never need to find out."

"Hajime-sama, if ever I had to leave your service I would be certain to have your needs cared for by someone of only the highest quality. I could not bear to leave you without care being taken of you."

Without her makeup on, her complexion betrayed her and color rose softly to her cheeks. She carefully averted her eyes, but it was difficult to contain the soft smile spreading across her features.

"You honor me, Hajime-sama."

"You honor yourself and your teachers. I am just avoiding being so foolish as to turn down the services of a master geisha. Ah... but we've become distracted. So... with the improvements in sea voyage and navigation, tensions between China and Japan were almost immediate, and have never been all that cordial?"

"China and Japan will always be at odds on some level, especially in a current sense with the contentious mess that is North Korea." She opens the book to a map to show him.

"Yes, Japan is far more united than it was in my day... but it seems to have found new enemies. We may be getting ahead of ourselves in history, but it may help understand other things. What is the current 'contentious mess' in Korea?"

Kikuya flips to a page about North Korea and points out Kim Jong Il.

"This is the mess. The man is brutal and crazy and vain," she says with a little punch to her voice. "I...don't even know fully where to begin but he is a real threat, bent on horrible things."

"North Korea, like China, is a communist country. We discussed communism the other day." She nods. "And yes. We will likely have to handle this situation ourselves. I know Grogg is quite eager. He worries for the Korean children."

"Ahh, I see. So, like the daimyos of my time... those of similar styles support each other, crazy or not. Yes, I remember communism. An interesting government... but it does not seem to take human nature into account."

She smiled broadly. Anytime Hajime could connect the present with his own experiences, she felt extreme pride.

"As I once read, it is a government that is good on paper and nothing more. The world fears communism. Especially the Americans."

He nods, thinking this over. "The collective culture system would allow a small handful to control the resources of the nation, without regard for oversight. At least with a dictator, there is a central figure to blame... and to assess. Those in charge of quotas, presumably tied to the military... collection... and I am sure a black market... and with it, organized crime, could become very powerful without a lot to stop it in such a system. It would work very well for a small group... but vast countries... very dangerous." he replies, working through the problems he could see out loud.

Kikuya simply listens to him as he works it out in words, rising from her kneeled position next to him so that she can attend to freshening his tea.

"Indeed," she agrees. "The institution has formally collapsed in most of the world."

He pauses in his assessment to watch her serve, sipping at the freshened tea. "All the more reason to forge alliances with other such governments then. Yes, I see the reason for tensions."
