Letting off steam (open)
She let of a blast of electricity, the voltage enough to power a city block for the better part of a day.  She followed quickly with infra-red radiation, then microwaves.  Radio waves, x-rays, gamma rays.  Toni was immune to the effects of the radiation itself, and the room would scrub itself down afterwards, but the effect of expending that much power left her feeling both better (not unlike cooling down after a day in the hot sun) and worse (tired, burned out, spent...).

She finally stopped and carefully unclipped her armbands, placing them in the unit that popped up, and replacing them with the next pair in the sequence.

Thirty-six hours this time.  Thirty-six where she hadn't otherwise expended any injury or taken in any additional power.  She'd started feeling hot... too hot, as the timeline had gotten closer.  She could make it longer if she was actively using her abilities, though she rather needed to expend any extra she took in fairly quickly.

She sighed as she snapped the armbands into place.  That brief moment where her energy was entirely unregulated was a terrifying one, the power surging up and making her every nerve stand on end, but it passed as the devices performed their function, regulating her body's energy flow.

Mutants were supposed to be immune to the effects of their own powers.  Why the hell were hers so screwed up?

She made her way back upstairs, to the kitchen, finding a frozen dinner in the freezer.  She popped it into the microwave and took a big step back and away.  She didn't need to pick up any stray rads.

Three minutes, according to the little digital timer.

Anya leaned against the doorjamb and watched her best friend. She had a meeting earlier in Chicago and decided to take a little five hundred mile detour before heading home.

"So what's the trick to not setting it on fire?" she asked with a smirk.

Legate makes his way into the kitchen. "Good afternoon/evening," he said pleasantly as he opened the refrigerator with his free hand -- the other was clutching the little metal cylinder -- and acquired some juice.

For just a moment, Toni managed a smile. "Not letting you near it," she said, her old self confidence pushing through for a moment.

"Hey, Legate," she added.

Anya laughed and was happy to see some of the old Toni poking through. She entered the kitchen and gave her best friend a tight hug. "I was in Chicago and thought I'd swing by. You know, one of these days I will shock everyone and not have appliances commit suicide when I walk into a room and actually use them."

She turned to the other person in the room. The one she didn't know. "Hi. I'm Anya Stark."

"Nice/a pleasure to meet you, Miss Stark. I'm Legate Son-of-Century-and-Azimuth."

A pause at Anya's comments. "...No one mentioned the appliances were sentient, Toni."

Toni held her friend tightly for a moment, releasing only to actually chuckle at the misunderstanding.

"They're not," she assured Legate. "My friend her just has bad appliance karma."

"I have a habit of destroying kitchen appliances, but it's the cereal you really have to watch out for. That's the dangerous thing."

Anya tilted her head in thought. Century. The name was familiar. "Century. West Coast Avenger back in the day, correct?"

Legate nods a little. "He worked with your fathers."

"One of these days, I will get a satisfactory explanation for that," Toni muttered. "Because that just shouldn't have happened."

"Spontaneous cereal combustion," Anya automatically said. She would stick with that until she went into the grave.

"He did," Anya said to Legate. "My dad has mentioned him in the stories he used to tell. Are you staying on Earth for a bit, or just passing through?"

She rolled her eyes. "...Uh huh."

The microwave beeped. "Want to split some chicken and rice with me then?"

Anya sighed. "It's not /fine/ food. It's a frozen tv dinner. We're going to go out for real food. If you're that concerned about wasting it, put it in the fridge. Someone can eat it later."

Gah! Stupid rich white girl, thinks she knows best...

Toni clamped down hard on that thought. That wasn't Anya. That was her own fear of death talking, making her irritable. She always was after a big discharge like that.

"All right, fine," she said. "We'll go out. But because I want to. Not because it was your idea."
