Let's Figure This Out

Matt Walker's office is in the upstairs portion of a two-story building near Chicago's South Side, which isn't in the best repair. Still, he calls this place his home away from home and the place where the work he does to finance his /real/ job is done.

He gets inside and takes off his duster, draping it over the back of the chair before sitting down heavily. Still no word on Austin Caine, still no leads, and Matt was reasonably sure that whatever those cultist had summoned was going to make its move soon. He considered calling Ian for advice, or Doctor Strange, but decided he wouldn't. He had to help put this together and then stop it.

He picked up the phone and called the rest of the team, asking them to come to his office.

Matt curses aloud as Michelle relays the story. This had just gone from bad to worse. How did he not put this together sooner?

"Here's the issue, everyone. Four days ago, we found the bodies of a group of cultists after a summoning ritual. The lone survivor said that there was another survivor, who turned out to be Austin Caine. Yes, that Austin Caine. The movie star. Over twenty people dead from summoning whatever they summoned.

Somehow, Caine walked away from it. Twelve hours later, his ex-girlfriend two members of the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club turn up dead on a road outside town. Both sites had sulfur and hellfire residue around them, but I didn't put it together right away.

We've been looking for Austin Caine ever since, but he's defeated my ability to track him down. I asked Michelle to keep a watch on his place and she found the Hell's Angels gearing up to attack him, but a creature showed up to deal with them.

Michelle, that wasn't a /demon/ you ran up againstand it's not a demon we've been looking for." Matt says, taking a deep breath and shaking his head.

"I think Austin Caine is possessed by a Spirit of Vengeance and that means Chicago is about to become a battlefield." Matt tells everyone.

"Does anyone here /not/ know what a Spirit of Vengeance is?"

Matt looks to Michelle and Karen.

"Spirits of Vengeance are pretty major league bad. They're hard as hell to fight, even on the best of days. The one I met back when I was kid didn't kill people, but this one is clearly not that type of vengeance spirit." Matt says.

"Anyone ever seen Lord of the Rings? You know the part where Nazgul guy says 'Don't get between me and my prey'?" Matt asks. "Spirits of Vengeance make those guys look like Dog the Bounty Hunter."

We need to be ready to go to the wall on this one. Anyone who doesn't want in should probably leave now. There won't be any hard feelings about it." he says.

"Anselm, I don't know how it got here or how Caine got involved with it. Maybe it was drawn here or maybe he's been doing this for a long time and keeping it from everyone. The fact is, we only know he's /here/. The best thing we can do is find out who he's after.

It's the best way to find it and see if there's a way we can strike a deal or something.

Karen, we'll get it out of here one way or another, but it will get ugly before it's over." Matt says.

"Alternately, you could stand by and let the Spirit of Vengeance do its work unimpeded." a voice says from the door.

Everyone in the room with notice that the man who speaks now it suddenly there where he wasn't there at all a moment ago. Karen, Shelly and Anselm all know this gentleman, as they've seen him at various times.

Michelle's probably seen him hanging around Fangtasia. No one ever seems to bother him as long as he's in the club.

"I would advised against trying to stop him. It could be worth your lives to attempt it." Aeron says.

"Great." Shelly groaned and got up from where she was sitting and approached the man, getting right up in front of him--in his face despite being so short in comparison.

"Who are you? Why are you stalking us? If Vengeance is loose in this city the last thing we should do is step the hell aside. I don't kno exactly who you are, but I know that you're getting on my nerves."
