Meeting of the McCoys
More and more Friedrich had grown disenfranchised with his family's methods of pushing the mutant agenda.  While Friedrich was hardly squeamish, in fact violence had little affect on him, but said action should serve a higher reason for the pursuit of mutant survival. While he wasn't sure he could say he loved his brother, Nicholas, he had a deep respect for him. The fact of the matter was, his habit of killing human sympathizers along with "wannabe-human" mutants seemed more petty than for any higher purpose. While Friedrich shared his brother's contempt for said individuals, in the end his continued crusade was not feasible.

His father was even more dissappointing. While Nicholas on some level may feel he's helping the mutant cause, Friedrich did not get the same impression from his father, no matter what he personally claimed. After long observation Friedrich came to the conclusion that his father was, in the end, a sadistic lunatic. He respected the man's brilliance, but his pattern of behavior increasingly confirmed the truth to Friedrich. The Dark Beast didn't care a wit about his people. To him "the cause" was simply a pretext to perform all manner of grotesque experiments to push the mutant genome. Not to help his people, but for his own curiosity and sick enjoyment. Friedrich's own modified mutations were proof of that. Granted Friedrich had intiated his own "inhuman" experiments, but at least they served a higher purpose.

Then one day, Friedrich believed enough was enough. He would never be able to properly aid his people within the confines of his home or with the limited doctrine of Gene Nation. No, he needed a new perspective. While leaving the only home he knew was difficult, it had to be done. So one day, with a disguise he'd been preparing to cover his animal-like legs and claws, Friedrich set out to find someone who could properly see to it his efforts were truly working for mutant benefit. Though in truth, he had little idea of where to go, hence his search. He had a few options, but wasn't sure which would be the most feasible.

Unable to make a solid decision without more information, Friedrich decided a visit to the library would be prudent. Perhaps there would be articles and studies he could utilize. He walked a little awkwardly, he wasn't used to walking like the average human, into the building. He made doubly sure nothing was visible before entering.

Again he's surprised by Sylvie's attitude. He wasn't certain if she was secretly dangerous or simply naive. Such behavior was odd to him.

"While my father used research from the late, unlamented Miles Warren to create me, he corrected that error some time ago. Personally I think his various alterations to my genetics somehow cancelled the degeneration factor." He says this as one would describe getting a physical.

"Good to hear," she says politely. "Me, manifestation just meant becoming more durable -- in the 'only bruising a little when someone else might break bones' sense -- and being unable to get dizzy."

Friedrich's eyes turned a little cold. While he didn't agree with his father and brother's goals, he was not completely uninfluenced by Gene Nation and its dogma. To him Sylvie looked like one of the human wannabes that move around relatively freely with just a simple disguise. Friedrich's own disguise looked simple, but was actually fairly extensive as his features were not so easily hidden. He knew they were mutants out there that had no hope what's so ever of ever walking in broad daylight. Mutations that isolated them from everyone, even their fellow mutants. Still, this was not the time to lose his temper.

"How fortunate," he was certain he managed to keep any sarcasm out of his voice."Let's say I agree to go with you, what then?"

He was wrong. Especially with those eyes. "...Yeah." Sylvie says drily. "Real fortunate that there wasn't much change when I was twelve, since I'd been unable to use my natural way of getting around in public since birth."

Sylvie's previously sunny smile was not in any way feigned, but it can't last against what she's quite observant enough to pick up on.
"Well, if you can graciously get over apparently being mad at me because I've always had to be comfortable with what I am and my life didn't dramatically change when I was 12 enough to come home with me, we'll get you a room, some food, talk to Dad and Uncle Scott, see about getting you some time in Dad's lab to work on your stuff, take other classes. That sort of thing."

"Comfortable!?" his voice hitched as he spoke, his eyes shifted, his irises turning gold, his pupils shifting looking almost catlike as he stood. As he spoke, his fangs were clearly longer than before. "And just what in the pits of Hell do you think..!?" He stops abruptly, taking several deep breaths, a little sweat forms on his face. No! His mind was his own! He would not become some blithering idiot in front of her! He couldn't let that weakness be exposed. Damn Father and his experiments! Still, he had a feeling that brief hint of madness would not go unnoticed.

"I assure you..I am as well learned..as I can possibly be." He sits back, his eyes changing back to normal, fangs lessening in length. "I require no instruction."

It didn't, but Sylvie's expression was entirely blase. "Yes. Comfortable. I'm luckier than most. Not as lucky as some. I can move around without the chair at home, even if my body is more made for zero gravity. I'm comfortable. So's my big fuzzy father. My mother, who can pass completely, has a few qualms about mutation because it was sprung on her as a teenager, but on the whole, she's happy with life. We've established that we don't know the first thing about each other, Fred. If my attempt to inform you is offensive, well, we'll just have to keep working on it. But I'm not going to apologize for being me."

She pauses and takes a breath of her own.
"Well, no academic coursework is going to be forced on you. The self-defense and abilities-control instructors might want you in their classes, though, depending on circumstances."

He manages to calm down somewhat. "It was never..a matter..of comfort for me," he breathed out." Nor for those I've met. For me it was one manifestation after another, sometimes radically different from the last. There was a time I could extend my jaw wide enough to swallow a human head." He wasn't completely, more of a cold madness reigned now. He chuckles a little. "But that's neither here nor there. You are you and I am me, no one should apologize for that. Oh wait, considering how often I change what am I really?" He asks this last question to himself, looking as if he forgot Sylvie was in the room. He tapped a claw against his fang with an audible noise. "Curious."

He looked over as if just realized she was there, which wasn't altogether impossible. "Right, beg your pardon. So going to school? It'd certainly be different."

Sylvie bites her tongue for now on 'the son of a monster,' because they need to stay focused.

"I bet it would. So what's it going to be? We don't have to like each other yet, cuz. But I'm not keen on leaving you out to dry. If we go home together, you get food, shelter, clothing, research facilities, input on new techniques, and to be clear, you're with me. You'll only get your ass kicked in the appropriate ass-kicking classes. I may not shoot lasers out of my eyes or do anything else special, but nobody's going to cross me."

He takes a final deep breath. His eyes look a little clearer and his poise has returned to normal."I..apologize for that." He doesn't clarify what that was exactly.

"Your offer is..appreciated. I am not accustomed to generosity so I beg your pardon if I am not able to respond accordingly." His voice lowers a bit. "And..I would like to know you..cousin."

She extends a hand.

He looks at the hand for a moment as if expecting some kind of mawed-horror to leap out of it. It happened once so there was a precedent. Finally he extends his own to grasp hers.

"You've reached the Misha Broadcasting System," a cheerful voice answered. "If this is a pizza emergency, please press one. If this is a beer run, please press twenty-one. If this is a real emergency, please hang up and yell really loud."

"Thanks! We'll meet you outside."
When she hangs up, she grins at Fred, noting his expression. "It's an old, old joke. We're just friends, except I have a date whenever I want and his actual girlfriend, the 'first wife,' isn't hoarding him."

Fred's eyes blink slowly a couple times. He was by far no expert in the intricacies of love and friendship.

"So..you're polyamorists?"

Sylvie laughs. "No such luck. We all played house when I was in kindergarten, and Misha's the kind of buddy who'll take you to dinner completely sans romance."

"When it's jokingly referred to as a date, hence your asking if we were polyamorous -- which is just /wrong/, by the way. I don't know how that prefix came into use on that word; it should be multiamorous -- when I'd explained he was just a friend."

And with that response Friedrich was pretty sure he never wanted to get drawn intro the intricacies of friendship. It sounded far too unnecessarily convoluted.

"I see," which was more of a 'I don't get it but I refuse to damage my brain more by listening to this'.

Misha pulled Darlene into the loading zone in front and got out of the car to open the trunk and hunt for Sylvie among the people going in and out of the library. He didn't worry about Darlene at the curb; she could take care of herself. Any passing meter maid or security officer would find themselves backing up in a hurry if Darlene took exception to being ticketed.

He lifted a hand when he saw her. "Hey!"
