The Path Never Taken
(Originally: http://www.scribbld.com/community/marvel_nextgen/117338.html?thread=6443354#t6443354)

A year and a half ago...

Odin has passed down his prophecies for the fates of his grandchildren. But there is another who has arrived to aid Asgard in its hour of need...

Odin takes Vincent into the same back chamber as the others.

"Ver' soon, Bifrost shalt be shattered by the Demogorge, and none mayst return to Earth, possibly for some time, possibly fore'er. So thou hast now a decision to make."

He holds up a scrying sphere, showing Vincent a scene from Earth - a scene of Franklin before the open gates to hell, scenes of the rest of the F4 battling all manner of mutant threats, and a great citadel rising, horribly, from the middle of New York City.

"Thou'rt a child of two worlds, two bloods. But tis not blood that makest an Asgardian, tis their eternal duty. So now thou /must/ decide where thy heart lies.
If thou'rt to be a child of Asgard, then thy Earthen brother and adopted family shalt battle and suffer alone in this time of trouble. If today ist the end, then ne'er wilt they know what became of thee. And e'en if today is not the end, one day, thou wilt need to abandon them fore'er, leaving them and all that is of Midgard behind. When Ragnarok comes, they wilt ne'er see thee again, and thou wilt abandon them to whate'er trials and struggles art their due to fight alone. And if so, when Ragnarok comes... thou wilt die alone and unheralded. There shalt be no triumph, there shalt be no glory. Merely leaving behind thy Midgard family to die... as all Asgardians must.
If this is thy choice, then thy heart is Asgardian, and I shalt restore Amora's blood to thee, at some cost to mine own power.

Or, thou mayst choose that thy heart be human, and belonging to..." a picture of Andrea emerges in the scrying crystal. "This one, always. If so, I shalt return the immortal blood to thy veins, that thou mayst live as long as she wilt, to die upon the same day, and not a moment before, no matter how many days that mayst be. And I shalt teach thee the secrets of mortal magic, that thou mayst become a more powerful sorceror to make up for the loss of strength, durability and other gifts of being born Amora's son. I wilt show this to thee o'er three days, after which thou wilt be sent back to Earth, more gifted in sorcery, but Asgardian no more. But thou mayst be in time to join them in their battles for Midgard, and mayhap warn them of some of what ist to come, mayhap to save many lives.

So, what wilt it be, Vincent of two bloods? Where liest thy heart?"

Vincent feels his chest tighten. This... this was huge. He could be made whole again, as whole as he ever was anyway. He would be truly recognized by Asgard. He would be part of the great and horrible prophecies. He'd dreamed of this.

And all it would cost him was his honor.

"My heart lies in my actions..." He mutters to himself, before clearing his throat and speaking.

"All-Father.... my brilliance, my power, my love, my hate, and all of my sorrow have ever been those in the measure of the gods, I would hope. I am honored to be born of the Golden Realm, to feel the call to battle as only an Asgardian-born can, but, though I have dreamed of such... this is not my path.

I have family, allies and friends, that have shaped my life as I have shaped theirs in kind. Love, given unbidden and perhaps even undeserving, has surrounded me, and I have given it in return. I was kept safe from harm, and blessed with teachings and tools. I do not seek triumph and glory in returning to them, no, I seek the fulfillment of oaths I have sworn.

To break those oaths by my actions, or allow my inaction to let them break on their own, even in the face of the end of all things, would undo all that I am and render all I might do, in the service of any realm, worthless. Though even without my aid I would trust them with the life of all of Midgard, so long as I draw breath they shall not face this hour without me." Vincent tries to stop his knees from shaking, keeping his spine rigid as he never lets his gaze fall away from Odin's sole eye.

"Asgard's blood courses in my veins, even if the god-eater spat me out, and I will always be ready and honored to answer the Golden Realm's call for aid, but I am Vincent von Doom, of Midgard, of the Fantastic Four, and my family needs me. I will go to them, even if the Bifrost is shattered and I must crawl on my belly through the reaches of Jotunheim and Hel to seek a new path."

Odin nods once. "Tis the way of Asgard... the gods hath sworn an oath, to stand 'gainst the dark until the end times. We canst not hold it against any of our sons to face adversity... and stay true to their own oaths.

Thou'rt a hero, and a true friend to those of Midgard. When thou'rt able, we wilt welcome thine aid... and for all thou hast done, before I return thee home to stand with thy loved ones in their own time of troubles... I give thee a boon.

When this travail is o'er, if I yet live, call 'pon mine name. It shalt take three days... as I traded three days for mine knowledge of fate. In this time I wilt train thee to cast magics, not as the blooded of Asgard do - but as mortals gain power... calling 'pon dimensional powers for their sorcery. And I shalt train thee how to call to Asgard for aid, to lend power to thine enchantments by calling 'pon a small part of the power of Asgard. And so long as Asgard stands, we wilt aid thee.

For now, thou must return home before the bridge breaks, and we hath just time to send thee. Thy friends need thine aid and foresight now... but when victory ist thine, and victory ist ours... I wilt teach thee, as a gift from Asgard to one of its mortal sons... mortal, but in control of his own fate, thy verse unwritten."

Vincent puts a fist to his chest and bows his head. "As you will it, All-Father. You have my thanks, and loyalty."
