A little morning air. (open)
... thinks that New York may just be a bit too sophisticated for this little, mid-west magic show.

Summer finished scanning the article in the morning paper and then flung it across her hotel room in irritation. God, she hated the press. If they ever bothered to get anything right, she'd just die of amazement. They hadn't even seen the damn show and they were already bashing it.

She sighed as she got to her feet and shucked the bathrobe she'd donned after her shower. All the travel time they were putting in for the show was beginning to get on her nerves. It made sense... you couldn't put down roots in one place and expect to keep a show like hers going. It counted on fresh audiences to amaze with variations of the same tricks. Stagnation was their biggest enemy. Still, it would be nice to not have a permanent case of jet lag.

It didn't help her mood that it was yuck-o-clock in the morning, either. A yawn reminded her of how little sleep she'd allowed herself, but that was the price to pay for a little freedom. If she didn't get up early and slip away on her own, Christopher would have her tied up all day with advertising, business, and whatever the heck else he did. He really didn't like that she'd started to question just what it was that he did to earn the rather large percentage of the profits from the show that he claimed for himself. Without her there wouldn't even be a show.

Summer muttered in annoyance to herself as she pulled on jeans, boots, and a t-shirt. A soft, leather messenger's bag that carried her important things was slung over one shoulder. After a second's pause, she stuffed the newspaper into it, too. What the hell? She could always do the crossword puzzle.

Practice made her silent as she slipped out of her room. Her manager slept in the next room over. Slept hard, too. The man was fond of his drink. There was probably another two hours at least before he'd be conscious, but better safe than sorry, right?

The sidewalks were already busy. That was one of the best things about big cities. She never had to worry about finding the whole place shut down for the night just as she was raring to go after a show. The first order of business was going to have to be breakfast. Judging by the scents she was picking up in the air, there was a cafe or something nearby. That would do nicely.

It was early yet and most of the other outdoor tables were empty as the waitress sat her down. She draped her bag over the back of her chair after fishing out a deck of playing cards. While she waited for her meal to arrive, she shuffled the cards in all sorts of elaborate ways. She just wasn't ready to face the newspaper again, yet. Instead, she watched people go by as her hands moved expertly over the cards.

Kristoff, for various reasons he promised himself he wouldn't think about right now, does not want to breakfast at the Baxter Building today. So there's that little cafe that's one of the few places in New York with decent banitsa.

He arrives, and apparently, the waitress is aware of Kristoff's reluctance to change, because she quickly seats him with "Banitsa and peach yogurt, Dr. Vernard?" He nods and thanks her.

...And then finds himself looking absently at the cards on the adjacent table.

Summer wasn't paying a lot of attention to her cards. They were all tricks she knew by memory and so she didn't have to put a lot of thought into it. The practice was always good, though. No sense in getting rusty.

At the moment, she had the cards spread across the table in a straight line and was making a peak of cards travel from one end to the other and back. Extremely simple and oddly mesmerizing.

When she noticed she had an audience, she smiled at him and scooped up the cards into a deck once more. Held up the deck with the back of the cards facing him and passed her free hand across the back. Without the deck moving at all, the back of the card was now the King of Hearts.

Kristoff raises an eyebrow and nods politely. "Impressive, miss."

"Thank you," she said as she passed the hand back the other direction and the card back reappeared. "Would you like to see another trick?"

"Mind moving a little closer?" Summer gestured to the empty chair at her table. She quirked an amused eyebrow at him. "It kind of ruins the effect if I pick your card for you..."

Once he was seated, she spread the deck across the table in a line once more. Before she started the trick, she extended her hand politely.

"I'm Summer, by the way."

After the pleasantries were concluded she scooped up the cards again. Using both hands to fan them out, she held them up to him with the backs facing her.

"Pick a card, please."

Kristoff reaches for the King of Spades, and --

Deep within Kristoff Vernard's mind is the knowledge of how to make circuitry that will fool a telepath. Deep within Kristoff Vernard's mind is a lot of things, so he pays a great deal of attention to it.

"Miss, you really don't want to be in there."

It was such a habit, such a part of the trick, that Summer didn't even really think about doing it anymore. But, this time was different. Where there would normally be a clear picture of the card in question, there was just the briefest flash of spades and then a wall.

She blinked at him and felt the color drain from her face. For the first time in five years, she fumbled her card deck. How did he...?

"I..." It crossed her mind to deny it, but somehow she knew that he knew. "I apologize. I didn't mean any harm. It was just part of the trick..."

Summer was still staring, wide-eyed. She shuffled the cards nervously as she answered. Although, she did remember to keep her voice down. "Mutation, I guess? I've just always been different."

"How did you know?" She had to ask. It had never happened before.

It didn't seem like a good idea to answer when the waitress was standing beside them and she'd taken that moment to deliver their orders. If she thought Kristoff's move from one table to another was strange, she kept it to herself.

Summer waited until her sausage, eggs, and toast had been set down along with Kristoff's order and the waitress had gone before she spoke again.

"I don't really have any control, I guess. I mean, I'm not very good at it. I can do tricks with it. It's not really... impressive now that you know how it's done, I guess."

He thanks the waitress. And even Kristoff's relationship paranoia isn't enough to make him panic that someone might get the Wrong Idea about his eating with a woman who isn't Cassandra.

"But it has not caused you any difficulties?"

"Only when I accidentally see things I don't want to." She blinked and shook herself out of her stupor. Probably shouldn't have said that part out loud. She reached for her silverware and pulled her plate closer.

"I just figured that was part of how it all worked. Accidentally, you know. I'm always a little amazed when it works like I want it to the first time."

"I'm not acquainted with anyone, really. Just my show manager. We move around too much to ever really get to know anyone well." There might just have been a little touch of weariness to her tone when she said that.

"Are you? Do you know others, I mean?"

He nods. "Several friends of the family." Technically, two of them are biological family, but Kristoff's mind refuses to think of it like that.

"Actually, there are some people you might want to consult if you wish to get a better handle on...not seeing things."

"Not at all; they are a mutant education center, not misguided bigots."

"Now perhaps we can exchange contact information --" He is not, after all, going to reveal Xavier's immediately to a completely unknown quantity, though he doubted she was with the Circus of Crime or anything. "And I will see about referring you." He gets out his business card and hands it to her. Which is in fact the first time this conversation he has actually identified himself as Dr. Kristoff Vernard of the Fantastic Four.

"Um. Sure." Summer nodded as she reached for his card. Christopher would hate the whole idea, but he didn't have to know. "Thank you for your help. And for not being upset about the mind thing..."

She read his contact information and blinked in surprise. Doctor? Looked like she was going to meet interesting people on this stop, after all.

From her bag, she pulled out a flier for her magic show. It had a glossy picture of her in her stage costume on the front with the show date and times. She scrawled her cell phone number on the back of it and passed it to him.

"You are welcome." With a brother like his, honor practically demanded he react to such things in an understanding manner.

He carefully folds the flier and puts it in his coat.

"And now, I believe I have some banitsa, and you have something appropriately American, and I wouldn't want this little situation to spoil the meal further."

Summer had the overwhelming urge to mutter 'braaaaaaaaaaains' at Kristoff, but she restrained herself. Somehow, she figured he wouldn't get the joke.

Instead, she nodded and looked suitably impressed. It was easy to do, since the list was impressive. "You must be a very busy guy, then. What has you out strolling this morning?"

"I just thought you might be on some exciting errand." She shrugged apologetically.

It figured that of all the places she'd been, she would choose New York as the place she wanted to try and make friends. Then again, anything worth doing was worth working at, right?
