Taking a Stand
The world of mortals was still alien to Kael. He wondered just how much longer he would have to stay here. Had his mother found any clue as to those who had created the shadow army that attacked Asgard? If not, then how long would it take? It wasn't as if it was all bad here. The Defenders were good people. Svalin was at least being more tolerant of him. Haljborn tended to be at least partially hostile most of the time. Vernique,, He turns slightly to the small woman holding her Asgardian son. He was fond of the woman. But still.. what was he doing here?

For those in the medical bay it would have been an amusing sight. Dr. Demasi had stood up to the Asgardian, who had a good foot of height on her, and looked up to stare down a stubborn goddess. There was cursing on both sides and there were threats of heavy sedation made on the part of the good doctor.

The mortal had prevailed and the Asgardian had gone back to the bed and didn't like one second of it.

Svalin shot Dr. Demasi looks filled with daggers from where she lay in the bed.

Dr. Demasi walked away muttering about not being paid enough to deal with stubborn gods and goddesses.

"It won't be that long, hon," Vernique assured.

Her brow furled, but she didn't speak right away. She wanted to snap back that she didn't need to be in here, but she held her tongue. Her wife was concerned and had every right to be and Svalin would do what she could to reassure her wife that Svalin was fine. In a lot of pain, but fine. It was the pain that was causing her temper to be shot and trying her patience.

"Mayhap," Svalin said carefully. Pain tightened the small lines of her face and her voice. Svalin would never admit to the pain though. "Thou'rt truly unhurt, and Solver as well?"

"We're absolutely okay. Solver was a little agitated and squirmy after everything, but not a scratch on him, and he's calmed down. I think he picks up a lot for his age, and now he's sure that everybody's still here, and going to be here."

Thoughts raced through Svalin's mind faster than she could hold on to any of them, but one kept coming back. How was she going to be able to protect her wife and son now? Her sword arm was gone and even though she could fight with her left, she was no where near as proficient with it as her right.

Svalin had two jobs to perform toward her wife and son. One was to provide for them and the second was to protect them. Right now she was unsure if she could do either. It bothered her on a level she cared not to admit. By right her wife could dissolve their marriage and take their son to find someone who could protect and provide for them. Not that Vernique would do that, but the thought had crossed Svalin's mind.

Svalin nodded. "I art glad thou'rt okay. I wouldst like to see Solver if possible."

Other dark thoughts crossed her mind, but she banished them least the gain foothold her in mind.

Ohhh, is Svalin lucky she's not dumb enough to voice all of these thoughts. "Of course, hon." And soon he's back in Vernique's arms. "See, Solver. Mommy-one's okay." Solver does seem to be taking the situation in gradually.

"So, hon. You thinking vant-garde tech or magic?"

"I hath not thought about that," she admitted. Her thoughts were much darker and more disturbing. She reached up with her left for Solver. She just needed to be close to her son right now.

And Vernique handed him over carefully. "Well, it'll take a while before you can install any tech. Got no idea how it works with magic; totally not my field."

Svalin carefully held him close and hoped he wouldn't squirm too much. Solver was a very active baby.

"I wilt have to look into technological solutions. I art unfamiliar with Migard technology. I wouldst have to travel to Asgard to speak with mine father about other solutions."

Sill, even with either solution Svalin doubted she would be effective in battle. Her ability to protect her family would be highly questionable.

"We'll sort something out somehow, hon."

The words doubting her abilities to protect Vernique and Solver even with an artificial arm, magical or technological, died on the tip of her tongue and weren't given voice. Svalin didn't want her wife to worry and she didn't want anyone to hear her own doubts and loss of confidence.

"Mayhap," she said. Her arm hurt, but Svalin put on a good face and didn't show it. She didn't like keeping these thoughts and knowledge of the pain away from her wife, but Svalin wasn't going to worry her about anything.

Svalin automatically frowned at the mention of someone else doing the fighting for her. It didn't sit well with her and it twisted her stomach up a bit.

She had never thought about a life where she couldn't fight and where she wouldn't die on the battlefield. Growing old and dying of old age left a very bitter taste in her mouth.

"Aye, he wouldst," she said. Her left hand curled into a fist. Anger welled up inside of her. She shouldn't need her brother or anyone to do any fighting for her. No one else should have to protect her family for her.

Vernique's not dense; she sees the change in her expression. "Hon, I promise I'm not trying to ruin your warrior cred. You're one of the toughest people I know."

"This ist not about being tough," Svalin said a little on the hard side. "There ist no honor in this and having others fight for me." The hand stayed in a fist and Solver grabbed it to shove a knuckle in his mouth to chew on.

"It's a temporary problem. You'll figure out how to compensate. The whole one-eye thing never slowed your grandfather down, I bet."

"It ist not the same," Svalin said. "I cannot protect thee and Solver with one arm or defend the Golden Realm from its enemies."
