Regrouping
Irina and Jenny returned to Nova Roma after checking out the shop in New Orleans and then in Chicago. Their trip had been unsuccessful in retrieving the knife, but they did learn a few things. Once they reappeared in Nova Roma they were escorted to Senator Aquilla's residence. There they were given a chance to bathe and given food to eat. After they were escorted to a room where Corey, Nick and Rose were waiting.

Waiting is a little bit of a misnomer for what Nick is doing. Ever since the demon got a taste of what was out there, he's been on edge. Right now he's pacing, for the most part, save when he stops near a table to drink more wine or whatever is placed there. Occasionally, licks of hellfire, or small sparks lick from his eyes or the deep scars on his hands, which look a little more stretched over the bone than normal.

Corey tries to focus on going over the facts they know, and handling other local things, and not worrying too much about Nick.

...Okay, he's worried about Nick.

"Don't all say hi at once," Irina said after entering the room and none of them said a word. "Unfortunately our trip didn't turn up the knife or any word on it. The two dealers we spoke to haven't heard anything about the knife being on the market."

Rose had been meditating on what they had found. She too had been utterly silent. She opens one eye.

"Were you successful?"

She is a right to business kind of person.

"Dioscuri," Corey mutters, with the unfortunate side-effect that on this occasion, there are people on the edge of hearing to be shocked at how vehemently a nice boy like Cornelius Drake just swore.

"The witness descriptions are pretty....nondescript. Nothing to really go on, except 'definitely seemed foreign', you know? So... what happens now?"

"That's because they don't want to sell it." Nick mutters back, with both more gravel than usual, and a very slight stereo effect to his voice. "They want its power for a sacrifice."

"We did learn that this wasn't the only theft. There have been two other robberies. The Keris Taming Sari was stolen from the National Museum of Maylasia and the Shamshir-e Zomorrodnegar was stolen from the British museum. Each was rumored to have some sort of power or ability. There were no witnesses, but a business card with an M on it was left at each scene. Did we by chance find one here?"

"Cornelius there is never a time and place for swearing," Lucius said as he entered the room just in time to hear Corey's swearing. "Please refrain from using such language." Lucius smiled. "At least where I can hear you."

That has Rose giggle a little. That's actually pretty funny in context.

"Okay. What next?"

"Sorry, Grandfather." Corey sighed. "Nobody mentioned anything about a card. 'Course, we don't tend to use the same kind of paper down here, so people might not even have recognized something like that..." Corey gets up and heads back toward the knife's pedastel.

"If the thieves are after multiple items, they most likely won't be using them very soon," Jenny said. "A sacrifice takes careful planning to get the most power out of it. Cory, are there any legends surrounding the knife that will give us a hint about other items or the specific type of sacrifice? 'Dark intent' doesn't really help. That could be anything depending on who has it."

"Who knows," Irina said with a shrug. "At least we have somewhat of a lead. We should probably keep an eye out for other things that are stolen."

He's somewhat sure he could find them now if he had to - but Nick, if not Zarathos, understands why the others are exercising caution. Irina in particular, doubtless remembers at least one episode with the Rider.

Still, eventually, one way or another, they'll find these people - and someone will pay dearly.

Nick continues to pace, letting the others talk.

Rose has only a little experience seeing the Rider out and about. Her reason for caution is more than she does not know how dangerous the situation could actually get.

"There would be a pattern, perhaps? All we can do is keep an eye on things."

"So the only option now is to sit and wait for something to happen?" Waiting was never Jenny's strong suit. She'd learned long ago to go through the motions so Older Brother Radar didn't come to life to monitor her /every/ move. "We can at least look into the business card left at the scenes."

"According to the lady at the shop in Chicago it's an ancient Persian sword encrusted with emeralds. Rumor has it that it's able to harm the otherwise invulnerable. Like silver to werewolves or able to hurt the invulnerable. She said the Keris Taming Sari is a Malaysian kukri that allows the wielder to match skill with someone else and not be overcome by superior skill."

Irina shrugged. "They're all weapons. That's another thing in common."

Its hard to tell how much Nick is listening to the others, continuing to pace throughout. The flames aren't worsening, but they don't die down either, the occasional spark or flicker emitting from his eyes or hands as he moves about. Conducting the ritual, and working to find these people has definitely had an effect - but for now, he's trusting the others to do their work.

Jenny wasn't all that anxious to go near the Shamshir-e Zomorrodnegar. Her involuntary resistance to weapons and attacks in general was the /only/ good thing about her condition.

"We're looking for weapons with dark histories. That actually does narrow the field considerably. Scholars are always writing about them or the legends they represent. Perhaps some of us should start checking with a different type of professional reference, like university scholars. Would Dr. McCoy or Professor Xavier be able to give us introductions?"

"Personally I think the Professor may have a little more weight. He has held is position for longer than Doctor McCoy," Rose points out though it's obvious she recalls both of them with a level of fondness she normally doesn't display.
