Asgard (Open)
It was nearing Solver's first birthday, not that Asgardians really celebrated such, but it had been some time since the mothers, especially MomTwo had some time with her grandson. Einmyria made it a point to send Skari with a message stating such. It was time for a visit while things wert quiet.

No sooner than they had stepped foot into the Great Hall, then Einmyria scooped Solver up to take him to go dote upon him. Eir and Astrid were tagging along after her to play with their nephew. Svalin went to go to talk to her father first. Then find some sparring partners. She brought her bat'leth to use against Asgard's warriors to test her abilities with it.

There was also the quest to find the Crimson Hawk the Norns spoke about.

First thing's first. She went to see her father.

For most of the day so far, she hadn't been able to let Solver out of her sight. So she'd hung with Einmyria and the littles and not let the conversation get serious. Only now was she able to assuage the paranoia enough to step outside for some air.

"Hey, hon," she said, spotting Svalin on the way to the practice yard.

Her wife was the one person Svalin was not expecting to run into. Svalin would have thought MomTwo would have kept her busy and distracted enough to allow Svalin a few hours in the practice yard to work up some courage.

She really didn't want to do this, but she couldn't disobey her father either.

Maybe Ragnarok was going to come to Asgard sooner than later.

"How fares thee and Solver?"

"Your mom and the littles are all over him. He got some suntime; he's just happy as anything. I... just needed some air."

Svalin smiled a little. "They doth enjoy seeing him. Mine sisters art not so little and I doth believe mine mother miss having a little one."

"Well, she's certainly good at babyproofing a house; no surprises there. How are you? When do we see about the security detail?"

"Later. First, I must talk to thee," she said.

"Talking is good. We're getting better at that again. Mostly."

Deep breath. "In mine previous trip to Asgard," Svalin began. "I went to see the Norns. They art the ones who guided me to seek a guardian from the Crimson Hawks."

At first, the response is conversational. "Oh? Well, I still think we could have figured it out for ourselves, I just needed to know whom to talk to with them, but...waitaminute. Don't they charge body parts and other such things? How much was this really obvious information?"

"They put the name of the person in mine head so I wilt know it when I hear it," Svalin said. "His fate ist intertwined with thine and Solver's. This way we art sure to find the right guardian."

A long pause.

"The price ist heavy, but it ist one I wilt gladly pay for thine safety."

Vernique starts to nod begrudgingly at the first part, but by the time Svalin has said the uninformative last part... "It has been established that you've got a pretty weird sense of what is figuratively affordable, hon. What are we talking here?"

"Mine life," she said. "Twice a year on the solstice. I wilt be summoned to the base of Yggdrasil and battle Nidhogg, the serpent. I wilt die, but mine blood and death wilt help the great tree heal the damages of the serpent. It wilt give Asgard more time until Ragnarok. In the morn I wilt be reborn and return to mine life."

"Mine life ist a small price to pay for Solver and thee's safety," Svalin half-growled. "It ist /mine/ duty to protect thee and Solver and mine duty to serve Asgard. This ist the only way I couldst be certain thou'rt safe e'en when I cannot protect thee. Mine life ist nothing compared to Solver and thine lives. I wilt give it freely."

"...Like Hell it's nothing! You are talking about what amounts to horrific torture on distinct occasions from now 'til Ragnarok. There had to be more options! Isn't it bad enough that Hal's got his whole 'I'm just a bloodshedding machine and don't matter' thing going? Do you have any idea how it's even worse everytime you act like this?"

Her hold on her temper was slipping.

"I didst what needed to be done to protect Solver and thee!" Svalin yelled. "It ist mine responsibility and I wouldst rather die than fail! I wouldst go through countless tortures if it meant that Solver and thee art protected! Thou'rt worth it!"

"I doth not matter as long as I do mine duties, which I am," she growled. "I art protecting thee and giving Asgard hope which it so desperately needs."

"Damn it, Svalin!" Vernique shouts hoarsely, tearfully.

It hurt to see her wife upset, but Svalin wouldn't do her the injustice of lying to her.

"What doth thou want from me? Tell me. How canst I help thee understand that mine duties mean more to me than mine own self? How canst I help thee understand that I wilt always think of others and Asgard before mine own self? This is who I art and how I wast raised."

"I art not a pawn! This ist what I wast born to do! I doth not have the mortal luxury of choosing mine life! Mine ist set before me and it ist the path I must follow!"

Svalin took a deep breath.

"I cannot change mine destiny and fate because thou wishes it so."

"I Know that! I'm the one who was already telling you that quitting as heir wouldn't work when you were ready to screw yourself over, remember that? So you just found a new way to screw yourself over, add a whole new helping of horrific Fate and I'm supposed to just take that in stride?"

"Aye!" she yelled. "All-Father help me," she muttered. "I cannot do this."

Svalin didn't want to argue and yell at her wife. She turned to walk away.

Vernique scampers to the other side of her. "No. We're not doing the walk away thing right now. I'm not stupid enough to try to get you to change policy or admit anything. This is all just going to be petty human ravings, but you're going to listen, because I'm your wife, and you knew two years ago that blood-sacrifice freaked me the heck out, and you've got to be able to see that it's not any easier when it's somebody I love."
