The Good Life
Vincent wandered his way into the common area on the 'kids' floor of the Baxter Building, sitting himself on the couch and kicking his feet up onto the coffee table. He glanced over at the on the entertainment center. Seven a.m., Sunday morning. Not the worst time to be getting back from a good Friday night, and a better Saturday, he mused to himself. He noted some lingering lipstick on his shirt; have to remember to point that out when he dropped it at the cleaner's.

He picked up a general use organizer from the table, tapping in his personal identification. "Voice messages left since last checked?"

"Twenty two," the digital voice replied.

"Organizational code Amorason-five. Discount messages from colleges seeking my enrollment, research facilities or weapons manufacturers offering jobs, aspiring 'mages', or young women I have made implications to call back but have not for reasons of my choosing."

"No new messages," the voice amended. Vincent turned his attention away from the organizer, reaching for the television remote and queuing up recorded news broadcasts for the past 48 hours. He turned his attention back to the organizer. "H.E.R.B.I.E., order half a dozen bacon egg and cheese bagel sandwiches from Schlotsky's Deli. Two with meunster, four with cheddar. Three on asiago parmesean, three on poppyseed. Large mint tea with honey and two sugars. For delivery." He smirked. "Charged to Mister Grimm's tab. Memo - Inquire about his poker tab to 'the Doomling' if charge disputed." He sent the message to the building's robotic gopher, then put down the remotes and stretched his arms over his head, settling his hands at the back of his neck. He noticed the phone number written on the inside of one of his forearms. He doubted he'd write it down before he showered.

The news started up with some fluff piece on Central Park using falcons for rat control, and Vincent smirked. This was indeed the good life.

(:tag any other Fantastic types, visitors, or anyone who wants to call really:)

Andrea laughed at that. The sound was slightly awkward, as though she was still getting used to humor, but it was a laugh all the same. The upgrade to vocalizations was still a fairly new one.

"He failed to mention that," she said.

One of Vincent's eyes widened at that. That wasn't so much a 'I see, you have cleverly mocked your brother' laugh, as it was 'I have peeled the still-warm flesh from my murder victim and fashioned a purse from it' laugh.

"I... imagine he would have."

She must have done something wrong.

"Forgive me. I am still fine-tuning my vocalizer. Laughter is an especially difficult concept to master."

Vincent hurriedly changed the camera to a stand-up compilation. "Let's broaden your contextual references a bit. And don't feel bad. Kristoff would always get snitty about the whole 'violating free will' and such, so I know what a learning process can be like."

"I also become a bit snitty when Friday night becomes Sunday morning," Kristoff says, coming down the stairs. For the record, he doesn't need to use a pencil. He'd created much better imitation strips when he was a teenager.
"Good morning, Andrea. Vincent, I trust you have not ruined anyone's life, that you are aware of?"

"Good morning, Kristoff," Andrea replied.

Poor Vincent. He had, to the best of her knowledge, never done anything especially wrong, at least to her. She did not believe he deserved the scrutiny that Kristoff gave him.

"It only becomes Sunday morning when you do it correctly." Vincent grinned, shrugging to his brother. "You should try it yourself sometime, when you finally start courting Cassandra." The emphasis and drama was laid on thickly.

"And of course I haven't ruined anyone's life. I'm insulted and shocked that you'd suggest such a thing. There simply may be one or two miscreants who now find themselves banned from a respectable establishment. They needed it made clear to them that despite whoever they arrived with, some lovely young ladies were free to spend the evening with whoever they liked."

A Look. "Thank you, but my dealings with Cassandra do not require the assistance of anyone who was learning how to walk when they were beginning."

Kristoff smiled and sighed a little. "I have nothing against the sentiment, and I am sure your method was... fascinating."

The von Doom siblings were at it again. Andrea failed to see why they were incapable of getting along, but she failed to understand many things, so it was no real surprise.

"I am afraid I can offer no advice in that regard," she said. "Having not experienced that particular... transition of time."

Oh this? This is them getting along just peachy, really.

"Learning to walk, or courtship?" Vincent tilted his head at Andrea cautiously.

He certainly didn't care if she'd courted anyone though. Certainly not.

Kristoff, who wouldn't worry so much if he didn't love his brother excessively, indeed considers this sort of thing part of the fraternal job description.

"I do apologize for our derailing the conversation, Andrea,"

"Do not worry about it, Kristoff," Andrea replied pleasantly.

"Courtship," Andrea said. "Though if some of the e-mails I recieve via our website are any indication, there appear to be any number of... very lonely males who would be interested in correcting that."

Vincent tried to catch it, but a scowl briefly crossed his face. For absolutely no reason. None at all.

"You should be very careful. There's so many perverts out there. And you're famous besides. I know it's not as if you can't take care of yourself, but if any of these desolate souls do anything... untoward, just let me know, and they'll be attended to." He snorted lightly, avoiding eye contact again.

Kristoff maintains a polite silence on the subject of Vincent, scowls, and perverts.

Instead, he looks to the appropriate security screen at the food delivery in progress. He doesn't move, as HERBIE will no doubt bring it shortly, but asks "Vincent, am I paying for that?"

"I have been very polite in turning them down," she assured Vincent. That was odd. She was certain she detected a brief elevation in his vital signs, but it must have been a blip in her systems.

She watched HERBIE for a moment. "Have either of you noticed HERBIE acting strangely recently?"

"Has he been flying into walls again?" Vincent cocked an eyebrow. "I'm certain I heard something crashing down the hallway late at night last week."

He waved a hand at Kristoff. "It's on Grimm's tab. He owes me from last month's poker game."

"He seems to have about the same behavior patterns he always has. Although I've occasionally noticed him being a bit...hurried more recently."

Kristoff smiled slightly. "One of several reasons I never play that game."

"His balance does seem to be off at times," Andrea agreed. "But he also seems to spend an irregular amount of time in my presence, for no readily apparent reason. And he has developed a stutter."

Vincent's gaze narrowed for a bit, then went back to normal. "I think maybe he just needs a memory wipe and a system defrag." He mumbled under his breath. "And possibly a reduction to running on MS-DOS..."

He turned back to Kristoff, smirking. "You just shouldn't play against me is all."

Kristoff just Looks at Vincent for a moment, then back to Andrea.

"If there's anything seriously wrong with the subroutines for timing or speech, it will be fixed soon."

At Vincent's last remark, he merely sighs, still smiling. "Competing against you in general is rarely a course of action that interests me."

"I hope nothing is seriously wrong with HERBIE," Andrea opined.

She considered the rest of the conversation. "I played poker with Mister Grimm and several of his friends once. I won. As I recall, he said..."

And here, her voice shifted to an exact copy of his, "'I ain't never playin' with no tinker toy again.'"

Vincent merely grinned and shrugged. "It would seem Mister Grimm merely isn't accustomed to matching skills with superior minds. A large percentage of the population, to be sure."

"I doubt that there's any significant irreparable problem," Kristoff assured her, then chuckles at the imitation. "I certainly hope his extensive epithet repertoire doesn't irritate you, Andrea." It had certainly always irritated Kristoff. Which is why he wasn't quite enough of a hypocrite to frown on his brother's comments about Grimm.

"I believe Mister Grimm possesses an abundance of what is known as "street smarts,'" Andrea said, diplomatically.

"It did not bother me, Kristoff. I do not even know what a tinker toy is."

Vincent shrugged dismissively, grinning as HERBIE finally arrived with his sandwiches.

"Good work HERBIE, it looks like I won't have to take you apart and reassemble you after all." He grinned, perhaps menacingly, as he took the sandwiches and passed one to Andrea.
