Magic and firearms: How could this possible go wrong? (Martin)
She wasn't entirely sure how she had made a deal with the little sorcerer Martin to teach him guns, but Frances liked to made good on promises. Oh no wait, it was for the magic arrows that had saved her ass, that was it. Anyway, she had to be make good and since no one was trying to kill/enslave/genderswap/veganify the world (yet, it was only ten in the morning), today was a decent day to do so.

Frances was at the outdoor shooting range, at the safety line with a few different examples for Martin and decided to warm up a little with a handgun and stationary target while she waited.

"Thank you!" He's still absolutely beaming after his round of shooting. "What's next? Do we blow him up?" It was a valid question actually.

"In a way," she admitted and took back the small gun. "So that was for close-combat and precision, right? This-" She lifted the M16 automatic rifle for him to see. "Is for when you need to cover a wide range with a lot of bullets." Coming up to the line, she sighted the rifle comfortably. "What you lose for in accuracy," she started and then squeezed the trigger, a hailstorm of sound and flash fire. The legs of the target picture vanished as the bullets punch-cut the paper off. "You make for volume and sound."

Martin's ecstatic grin slowly turns more into one with a barely contained mischievous excitement to it. Precision was not his forte. Range and that sort of destruction? Much more his thing.

"I'm not the best in precision anyway," he grinned. "I like this one!"

"That's how many people feel about automatics," she agrees with a mild nod. She isn't going to bring up the ethics and morals with this, he's too young and this is to learn how to shoot. "An M16 can feed a hundred rounds a minute, and some rifles go much faster, even 300 to 500 rounds a minute. This one's accuracy isn't so bad as some." She unhooks the rifle and hands it to him. "The kick will be stronger than with the little handgun so be prepared."

The rifle doesn't immediately float out of her hands to him because he's stand there looking at it slightly lost. Figuring out how to use TK to hold a handgun wasn't that bad, it was small after all. Martin stares at it for a bit trying to figure this out, and gives Frances a sheepish apologetic shrug in the meantime. "It's hard not being able to hold it."

If he couldn't hold it and close range sort of crystal ball pose wouldn't work with a gun this size, guess he'd need to try something else. "Could you put the back part on my shoulder?" Had to start somewhere.

She smiles at him to relieve that look. "We knew going in this wasn't going to be a cake walk," she points out and walks over with the rifle. "Well, since accuracy isn't really key, we doing having to worry so much about aiming, huh?" She braces the butt to his shoulder and then props the rifle's barrel at about the right height. He could nudge it wherever he wanted and then focus on pulling the trigger. "Take your time."

"No we don't," he smiles, looking slightly relieved as she helped with the gun. It was a bit of an odd sight with a gun against his shoulder and he hands at his sides. He considers how to do this, let his hands hover not far away from where his hands were supposed to grip, or have them seem to grip an invisible gun just offset from where thy were supposed to. Better try both. As he does so, he tries moving the gun a bit in each method before deciding the later was a bit better and taking his time squaring his feet like he'd seen Frances do to brace for recoil.

After he's pretty sure he's close enough with aim, he has the trigger pulled. "Ah!" The recoil has the gun jam back into his shoulder and Martin jumps back, causing his aim to jerk away from his intended target momentarily before he telekinetically lets go of the trigger. "Umm...oh! I hit stuff!" On the target next to his. With a few stray shots clipping his own poster. Well...it hit something.

Since she had a good feeling this was going to going to happen, Frances grabs the rifle in case it get dropped or starts kicking around like a rodeo. "It kicks a lot more, since the longer you hold the trigger, the more bullets it spits out," she explains sympathetically. "Like trying to hug a washing machine on the fritz, ain't it?"

Looking over at the damage done, she snorts and shakes her head. Really, that was a terrible shot, but fora guy who's not holding his gun and not used to the guns recoil, at least he didn't shot behind them or something horrific. "You did hit stuff, this is true. You hit stuff all over the place." She looks at him in amusement, eyebrows up as she smirks.

"Yeah, sorta. It's hard to do it with your mind," he mumbles with a frown at the offending gun. His TK wasn't perfect and anyway, recoil was hard to deal with without anything physical for the gun to recoil against.

"But isn't that the point of it? To hit stuff all over the place!"

"Oh but portals to other dimensions and throwing plasma bolts are easy," she counters and snickers to egg him along. "It's not that easy to do with touching the gun. I've seen people fall back for holding their rifle poorly.

She gives a very faint wince at his summary, but doesn't make a big show on it. "That depends on what the point of you pulling the trigger is, Pip, and whether the other stuff around the target is forgiving to bullets."

"Mystic bolts," he corrected with a huff. "And they are! Well, portals are a bit harder but mystic bolts are the easiest thing! Just...pew!" To demonstrate he made a handgun shape with his hand and shot off a bolt as he spoke. It hit the paper target square in the chest with a blast, leaving a sizable hole. "See?"

"Well there are no people over there," he said gesturing to the target area. "And I don't think anyone should mind if the stuff around the paper accidentally gets hit. It's for practice right? So they shouldn't."

"Bolts of mystics," she agrees with a sage nod, watching him just toss said bolt at the target. Well at least he can aim with that, good news for next time on the battle field. "And how long did you have to practice to get that good?"

She nods and waves to the damage. "And for around here, that'll do. You've probably knarked off a squirrel or some birds, at worst. However, the groundskeeper aren't too crazy about rebuilding their range, so let's not go crazy with the remodeling by automatic, okay?"

He just wrinkles his nose at her for that. "They're not made of mystics." He uses TK to adjust his 'grip' on the automatic while he answers her questions. "Umm...it wasn't really training it was just fun and the easiest thing to figure out so I did it a lot in the beginning. Plus, I can cheat with bolts! You can't with arrows and guns," he grins.

"Okay, I'll try again. How many bullets do I have left? Do I just go until I run out?"

She lifts her eyebrows to look as innocent as possible at his sulk. What? Next he'll tell her Girl Scout cookies aren't made of real Girl Scouts. "Sounds like typical logic for many teenage boys about this kind of thing," she mutters to herself with a snicker.

She shrugs, because she can't really keep count with an auto. He had used easily under two dozen, she'd bet. "Pretty much, go for short, controlled bursts of fire, so that you don't over-do or hurt yourself."

He didn't point out he'd started when he was ten, instead he takes gives a diginified huff. "Well if I misshoot my bolts, I can always change their direction after I've shot them, you can't do that so...there!"

"You can get hurt shooting guns?" He blinks, because he knows that getting shot must hurt but the person doing the shooting getting hurt? How weird. He looks back down at the gun with a suspicious look but tries the short burst idea. Calling it controlled would be generous. But at least this time it doesn't hit the target next to his, and hits parts of his poster. The target guy would be using his...thumb anytime soon. But hey, slight improvement.

So did most boys, if the rumors were to be believed. She nods again sagely as he defends his bolts of mystic and the accuracy. And doesn't giggle at misshooting his bolts, at all.

"That is the objective with guns," she points out mildly. "But yes, you can touch the heated barrel and burn yourself, pinch your fingers, or the gun will kick back and hurt your shoulder, or, if you are really stupid, your head or jaw if you brace it poorly." It's kinda funny to watch when it happens, really. He's a little leery of the gun now, but does the quick squeezes. Aim still sucks, but it's an automatic rifle, accuracy is less crucial than bullet count.

He considers the gun again after hearing the things that could happen and the potential things it could do to one actually seems to...relax him and put a smile on his face. Well of course he didn't have to worry about the finger pinching and burning parts. And he could always handle the gun without it bracing against him. Short of shooting himself, he was pretty safe.

Awesome.

The next bursts of gunfire slowly get more and more accurate, his crowning achievement being one burst that results in a few stray bullets hitting the target's left shoulder and almost close to the chest. In his opinion that should pretty much count as a heart shot! Still smiling, he telekinetically pulls the trigger again, only to find he's out of bullets. Cue the woobie-like disappointed expression. "Aww...I was getting better too."

Frances pushes off the post she was leaning on to take the gun, chuckling a little at his disappointment. "Well, it takes ground-pounders and Marines a few dozen hours on the field to get decent, so I say you're coming along nicely," she praised and smiled down at him. Looking at the target with the best cluster, she nods to it. "You want that, you can take it home if you want. Lots of people do when they've proof they did a good job."

He grins at that. "I can bring my targets home? Great! I'll put them up on my walls and everything." Proof he learned how to shoot! And had even hit something. "That was fun. Guns aren't bad." Pause. "For people without magic of course. Magic wins but this isn't bad if you're stuck without it." Because obviously magic was the best.

"Visitors'll be very impressed. Everyone needs bragging rights, after all. And these are pretty good for a newbie." She tilts her head and considers, taking the rifled to spit out the clip and put the safety on for storage. "Guns aren't bad but they're like magical artifacts: in the hands of someone knowing what they are doing and are respectful, they can be very useful. With someone bad, or fooling around, however, that's when guns can be very bad."

She squinted at him. "You got a far-sight spell or are you gonna need binoculars for the next one?"

"Thank you," he beamed. "I guess, but magic seems so much better. But it's okay, not everyone can do it so they need other things. Maybe I can make more magic bullets..."

"Umm...I can look one up? What do I need it for?"

She snickered. "Magic's awesome for you, target-work's my speciality. If we all did magic, it'd be less cool, wouldn't it?"

With a sweeping gesture, she directed them to the long range area, where a tarp laid over something on the ground. "Because this is my darling baby, Seraphina. This is a sniper rifle," she explained and revealed the long rifle. It was just a head short of Martin when stood up and had more intricate sights. "She chews through cartridges this long." She held up a hand-length example for him to see, way larger than even the automatic rifle's ammo. "And if you want to see what she can do, you need to be able to zoom in on that orange circle waaay out there." She pointed into the tree up against the adjacent hill and then gets onto the ground, lying down on her belly with the rifle in front of her.

"I guess so," he conceded.

He followed along behind her to the next range, looking over the rifle with the proper respect. He was going to treat this as her version of his magic hat. Which meant the utmost respect, care and seriousness when dealing with Seraphina. "So I have to look through that thing and I'll be able to see the dot over there?" He watched her carefully to figure out how to do it for his turn.

"Yep, the sights are the only way to see what you're aiming for. Keep an eye on that target. A sniper's job is to hit something precisely the first time and from a far distance. With Seraphina, I could hit a target a mile away. And like all good shots, it's 95 percent prep and 5 percent the actual shot," she explains and checks her sights, fiddling with knobs. "You have to take into account any wind, how much stuff is there in the way, are they moving..."

Once she's satisfied, she hunkers down to get zen. "Like Dad says, you have to be here, in this moment, and all of you. Be ready, take a breath and aim. Commit and own up to the consequences. Then-" There's one loud crack, and then she's looking through the sights with a smile. "Four inches off center, not bad for a quick round."

He sits down cross legged beside her, but still with some distance not to bother her, with his hands in his hat as he watches and listens. "A mile? Wow. And I thought bullets went fast enough you didn't need to worry about wind, I thought wind was just for arrows and stuff."

The sound is louder than he'd expected and he's genuinely surprised she didn't hit dead center. "...I didn't know you could ever miss." He really thought she always hit perfectly. Though it made him think of how far off he'd be in this case...this looked difficult. But challenges were good.
