Heroes Are Not Born...
Dolemeck Night was fortunate, the first job he applied to accepted his application, and now he worked in a used bookstore in lower Manhattan. He tried to not abuse his shadow powers too much at work, or where others could see if he did. His fellow co-workers were a bit "snobby" to him at times, and if Derek saw them he would label them all as "hipsters" or spoiled rich kids.

Tonight, the other two employees who were on duty decided to leave early. When Dolemeck asked why, he was told someone of his "class" could not understand, and that it would be his duty to close shop, tonight. While most would argue or cringe, he smiled. It was a big responsibility to close up the shop, and it could prove to his new boss that he was willing to work hard. Well, not just his boss, but his parents, Mac, and Derek as well.

It was now ten o'clock at night and time to close shop. He shadow ported with today's earnings to the back of the store, placing it in a safe that was in the ground floor of the building. Once the money was secure, he shadow ported to the front of the store, going to change the store's sign from "open" to "closed". It had been a long day, but so far, it was a good one.

"It's a term for housing for those less fortunate. Financially and mentally. He...thinks by your actions that you are a off mentally. He's an idiot for thinking so."

Derek doesn't even hide the venom in his words as he watches the cop pull away. Idiot. Moron. Asshole. So many words he wanted to yell.

"I'm sorry you had to deal with this, Dole."

"Am I off, mentally?" He looked confused at this, before shaking his head. "Please, I do not want you to be sorry for me. My boss is right. I should have complied with the goons demands. But that money was not theirs to take! I wanted... I wanted to be like Uncle Jimmy and my Father. I wanted to do the right things like they do!"

His eyes darted from the store, back to Derek. "Derek... why do we not have an Agents of Atlas here to stop such things?"

"Because the Agents have to work in the background, Dole. After all, it took Pops how long to get Atlas in line with the new ideology? That's just on the back end, too. It's why Atlas is doing beneficial biotech research now."

Derek sighs.

"And frankly, to be 'off' mentally is to be a member of this family. It's not every family that is made up of a secret agent, a mermaid, a siren, a space man, a gorilla, and a killer robot."

That last bit has a smile sent Doles way.

"But... why can't we be the heroes they once were? Biotechnology takes years to make, and while they are all working on that, who will stop the bad people who run about this city? Not every super hero group can be everywhere at once! We should do something... we should help!" Dolemeck spoke passionately about this to Derek. He really wanted to make a difference, now.

Tonight, his soul almost died. People wanted to hurt him for paper currency, bad people. And there were three of them and one of him. It made him realize that there needed to be more heroes in this world. Especially since no one came to aid him. And if this had not been him, but his co-workers... they could have died.

"We do not have to work in the background, Derek! We can make a difference, can we not?" There was suddenly a groan as Dolemeck grasped his shoulder. It was hurting once more, and the bandage was starting to turn red.

"We will, Dole. I've been seriously considering going on a team. But for agents, we're just two. if we could get more, we would. But Mac is an Avenger, Nim I don't know well enough about and she's on a team anyways...and even then the slow growth is the better long term means to facilitate change."

As much as Derek hates saying that, he knows it's true. This was a lesson his father beat into his head growing up.

"But we'll think of something. And we will. Now, lets get you to a hospital."

"I want to be on a team with you, Derek... if you join one, that is." Dolemeck hissed as Derek helped him to walk. He wanted to ask what a hospital was, as it was another thing he did not know.

"Growing up" with the Agents of Atlas, they had everything they could ever need or want. The real world was so different, and from what Dolemeck saw tonight, it was dangerous as well. Not everyone was like his Uncle Jimmy, Aunt Namora, Uncle Ken, or even his parents.

Dolemeck learned an important lesson tonight, one that he knew he would never forget. One that would drive him to hopefully become a better "human". Heroes are not born into this world, they are made.
