Over due for a brain update
Along with the brain scans (to make sure it wasn't broken), and the body scans (to make sure the rest of her was healing), Sammy knew she'd have to talk to one of the psychologists. Her appointments were usually with Doctor Samson, but there were other, more important things taking up his time. She'd been willing to wait until he was free, but the deputy director overrode that by virtue of "because I said so!"

Sometimes it wasn't fair that Mom was the deputy director.

She managed to postpone it until after the funeral services were all attended, and then landed herself back in a med bed waiting for Dr. Morse to appear. Dr. Morse would be the one to decide if she could return to active duty. As far as cracked ribs would allow.

Valini laughed and nodded. "Once you've healed, the physical therapist okays your progress, and your powers' version of physical therapy okays your retraining, and everything's in the clear? Yes, I intend to clear you for duty."

"Okay, I can work with that. My Glock has been lonely without me." She smiled, relieved this wasn't as bad as she'd feared. "Thanks, Doctor."

"Good, this'll go smoother if we don't have to squabble with each other," she agreed and dipped her head smoothly. "A pleasure to work with you."

"I'd like to promise it will always be this easy but I can't. I'll try, though. I get psych evals twice a year if I'm careful. More if I'm particularly active."

She lifted her eyebrow and nodded mildly, a prediction she knew all to well. "I've yet to meet a patient that was completely ideal, but it's a relief to not need to resort to threats to get compliance." Ah yes, psych evals. "They seem an annoyance, but it's better to be annoying than have our people shatter during a mission. So yes, the more active agents get checked more often."

"I kind of thought it might be for research purposes. The deputy director talked to some other sources and I'm apparently one of a kind. No handbook for me." She grinned. The worst of the appointment was over and she could breathe again. "So they use me to write one for the next stopwatch."

"As Adam Savage once said, as long as you write stuff down, it's science. Paraphrasing, but." She shrugged a shoulder mildly but smiled in appreciation for Sam's uniqueness. "The best part is no one has ever done it. The irritating part part is no one has ever done it." She smirked, wrinkling her nose at the idea of Sam's mentality as a litmus test. "If we get another field agent with time-warping powers, yes, though I prefer to think of it as checking the oil than a sell by date."

"I dunno if we can handle another one. I was pretty mean to Tim when I learned to control it a little. His tools were all over the place. I even moved his beers while he was trying to drink them."

With their luck, there'd be another one. Maybe even an alternate Sam, things like that had happened before. Val smiled, though pressed her lips to look like she was chiding Sam's antics. "Messing his beer? Not his tools as well! Poor put-upon Tim."

"The Starks have their Rhodes, Furys have Dugans." Sure, that explained everything. "He never told me not to, just no time tricks when he was holding something explosive or flammable."

No, it did, even if the Rhodes and Dugans might want to swap for a break. She smirked at Sam's logic on taunting Tim and canted her head to the side. "Okay, true he didn't specify his beer's safety, he should know better."

"Right. And I didn't steal it. The colonel and Dum Dum steal his beer for poker games. I at least leave it somewhere he can still reach it. Sure, it might be on the other side of the workbench, but it's there."

"Between the beer pilfering and the reliance on his coffee maker by R&D, it's impressive Mr. Dugan continued to be so generous with both," she mused out loud. Perhaps SHIELD could borrow Tim for helping Sam, he could stabilize or ground Sam. At the least, he was the last person she'd pulled a gun on and seriously consider shooting.

"He's the big brother a lot of us needed and never had," Sammy said. "The big brother with the cool toys."

She chuckled softly, that description of Tim sounded pretty on the dot. "And he never really seems to complain about his position in the SHIELD family." SHe paused and considered the familial bond and how it helped and hurt so many with the crash.

"His position is the prodigal son. He goes, he comes back, and it's all approved. He's that good at what he does."

"He's a prodigal son?" That was curious, a prodigal was forgiven, not because of what they do. "Do you get the third degree for wandering?"

"I don't actually get a third degree, it's not necessary. I was tagged before my first diaper change." A one-shoulder shrug accompanied the words. "Tim is special. They want to keep him close, but they can't make him stay. So when he comes back, it's a new lab, pretending he didn't requisition the parts to a beer locker, and funding his coffee pot."

She lifted an eyebrow. You couldn't throw a baseball without hitting someone that qualified as 'special' in higher-up SHIELD. So what made his special more precious that Sam's? "Is it usual for blind eyes to be turned over eccentricities with R&D?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"I wouldn't call it a blind eye. I would say that Tim's file is as thick as mine, but I'm not nearly as valuable to SHIELD as he is in the long run. Or any of the R&D geniuses. There will always be fewer of them. Field agents are easier to come by. Supply and demand, right?"

A fascinating aspect, was the idea of blase expendability of a field agent ingrained into all of the active agents, even into a Fury? She wondered if the heads knew they had their resources pitted against each other and nursing low resentment. There was healthy competition and then there was this. "Technicians and agents both are easy to come by. The good ones of either, however, aren't and we'd like to keep both for the long run."

"The colonel used to say Gaffer was worth a dozen agents, when he told me bedtime stories about the good old days," Sammy mused. "I was looking forward to having my own Gaffer when I take over the head office. We kind of got off subject, didn't we? My fault, I don't usually get to talk so freely."

Valini shook her head and smiled to reassure. "That is the point of talking to the likes of me, talking freely and getting to speak your mind. Nothing is off subject." She paused and smirked. "Okay, clearly there's some exceptions to that statement, but for the majority, it works."

Sammy laughed a little at that. The good doctor was right, there were a lot of exceptions to that statement.

"I really want to get back to work. All this downtime is bad for me."

"Unfortunately, impatience doesn't speed up healing. And the last time I suggested a constructive hobby for downtime, knitted handgun cozies started appearing on agents's holsters." Val shrugged at that, like she could have predicted the Yarn Bombing of SHIELD HQ 2010. "But we can see about at least getting something for you to distract from the tedium."
