All Hallow's Eve (X-ers)
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

Xavier's mansion was decorated appropriately to celebrate the holiday. Spiderwebs (fake of course), jack-o-lanterns, ghoulish dummies of witches, mummies, vampires and other images right out of horror movies were strategically placed. Artificial smoke floated inches above the floor and swirled around objects and legs. There would be very few trick-or-treaters because of the relatively remote location of the mansion, but it didn't stop the inhabitants from celebrating.

Lucas loves Halloween, such an easy time to communicate with the spirit worlds beyond. He's settled for the evening near the lake, with a small fire set up that should slow burn for most of the night. He has food set out for himself, all simple, but with a variety, and places set out ringing the fire.

He chants slowly, speaking in the old tongues, one by one, telling old stories to whatever and whoever might come to listen.

The spot Corey had decided upon as best for burying apples -- not many, but his Aquila grandmother and a few others deserved an apple whether he'd known them personally or not -- was not far from the lake.

You don't really need to bring anything to dig with when you're Corey, so he just places the apples and the earth takes them in.

Eventually, he looks over at Lucas by his fire, listening with interest.

He finishes the story, spoken in Cheyenne, then looks over towards Corey.
"The spirits appreciate the apples. Thank you."

"They're welcome," Corey says, head canted a little. "What was that?"

"Cheyenne. I'm telling some of the old stories over dinner. I'll be out here most of the night."

"Neat. What was that about?" Corey'd had the privilege of hearing several different cultures' stories on the same themes over the years, but Cheyenne certainly hadn't been one of them.

"The story of Sweet Medicine, one of the first great teachers, who showed the people how to live with the Earth and do right, when men were doing evil out of ignorance. The spirits listen well tonight, and appreciate having a place at the fire. They like hearing the old stories, shows some people still remember their teachings."

Cait buried apples near the lake earlier in the day. Once she was done she got ready for the party. She was dressed up as a mermaid, having made her costume herself.

Rolled up tee shirt sleeves, old jeans and well-worn leather boots. Favorite battered leather jacket. Slicked back hair. Candy cigarette dangling from a sneer.

Misha was James Dean.

"So tell me, are you a rebel with or without a cause?" Cait asked as she offered him a glass of punch (non-spiked of course).

"Rebel without a clue," he deadpanned and took the punch. "Guess I should avoid taking a late night joy ride, maybe?"

"Please. You're far from clueless," she said as she sipped her punch. "Might be wise. Don't want to tempt the Fates."

"Shhhh. I get out of a lot if I'm clueless. Then I can look cute and be forgiven." Non-alcoholic punch was not going to help him sleep tonight, but the booze was still off limits. He wanted it, but he wanted to not be the family hitman more than the vodka and a solid night's sleep. "You look great tonight."

"Does it work? Cause if it does I may just have to start acting like a real blonde." She chuckled a little. Even she didn't believe she could act that clueless. "Thanks," she said as her cheeks turned red.

"Well darn. There goes that plan." Not that Cait thought she could ever pull it off. She wasn't the smartest of the bunch, but she pretty much had a clue. "Do they bother you much? The reporters."

"Not much. There'll be random photographers when I'm in New York, but they're more interested in the other side of the family. The embassy likes to arrange interviews and play dates, but I'm pretty uncooperative." He grinned. Thwarting his handlers was one of the few pleasures that didn't require a whole lot of effort.

"Why am I not surprised to hear that you're uncooperative?" she teased. Like Uncle Logan, Misha didn't do anything he didn't want to do. "Do they try to arrange a lot of playdates for you?"

"Yes and no. Now that Mikhail took the throne, they're not looking for the highest royal they can find for me so much as they're shopping me around to other royal houses to make a good alliance. Russia seems to be picking up right where the monarchy left off and thinking it matters. If that makes sense." He took a drink of the sweet punch. A beer would be so much better. "Since they're pretty certain I'll never inherit, it's not so important who I marry as long as she's suitable and has the right connections."

"Feel sorry for them. I'm not what they wanted, but they're stuck with me." He chuckled. "They really didn't know what they were in for when they went looking for the Romanov family. Mom filters most of it. If somebody mentions marriage and children to you during the engagement party, just smile and say you're still looking for a nice girl. Watch their faces turn red."

"Thanks for saying so," he said. "I'm pretty sure that whatever blue blood Mom gave me, Dad's peon blood beat it up and stole its lunch money. They won't stop me from being ordinary, and don't let them stop you from having a good time in Moscow. It's really a stunning city. It'll be fun to see it again."

She couldn't help but to laugh when he said that about his bloodlines. The mental image was amusing.

That was one of the best things about Misha. He was so down to Earth despite having royal blood, a mother who was wealthy in her own right and not to mention now had a stepfather who was one of the richest men on the planet. He never tried to be more than he was and he was always one of them. Unlike some at the school. The Guiles siblings, Jenny Rather and a few others for example. They always wanted to be more, Misha didn't.

"Would it be possible to arrange for someone to give me a tour of the city while we're there? Oh and I also need to pick up something for Corey." Cait had the perfect thing in mind.

Cait smiled. "That'd be nice. You're the best." She impulsively kissed his cheek. "Have some fun tonight. You deserve it." She smiled and then went off to see what kind of trouble the other students were getting into.
