All Hallow's Eve (Defenders)
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

In Los Angeles and Hollywood it could be said that every day was like Halloween. People were always dressed up and most were costumes. On Halloween just about everyone dressed up, not just the normal ones.

Zoey scrunched up her face. "What does auntie up mean?"

"To stay in the game, you need to spend a little something into the pot each round." Simon antes in a mini-Snickers bar. "There, I paid something so that when someone wins they can have it."

"Oh." Zoey was quiet for a moment as she thought about this. She could lose candy so she had to be careful about what candy she placed on the table. She pulled a lollipop out of her bag. It was a green one. She hated the green ones.

How do they talk him into... any of this? Oh, right, cards, gambling, bar stuff. And it makes Zoey happy.

He eyes his candy. He hates candy, it isn't food.
"I canst wager only one piece?"

"Aye, brother. One piece." Svalin put in a pack of Twizzlers.

He deals the seven cards. "Griffen, Marlow, you in?" Aslief has probably filled her quota for "fun" for the rest of the year and "pink" for her entire lifetime. Ohu is...Ohu.

"No thank you, I... Had my fill of fun tonight," Griffen says with a slight smile.

"Good night everyone."

Aridis decides she doesn't want to play. There are scary movies to watch out of curiosity. "Nay. I shall stay out of this game. Have fun tonight my friends. I shall see thee in the morn."

Halbjorn grabs a piece of candy randomly and tosses it in, it doesn't matter, its all useless sugar. One piece? Its going to take forever for him to get rid of it all. And what if he somehow turns out to be good at this game? That would be terrible.

"Ver' well." Halbjorn responds, having had some version of the rules explained to him, and knowing at least this many numbers. "I hate a red six."
No way to legitimately start losing yet.

A few hands later Halbjorn is up two pieces of candy. Simon is down five, and Zoey is up three. Everyone else is even. Simon eyes the clock. "Wild."

He seems to be winning, or sort of winning, except Zoey. Why is he winning? This is terrible. No matter what he does, he keeps getting more candy.

Depressed, he lays down his card. With his luck it'll be just the right one and he'll win again and get more candy. Bleh.

Svalin is even so far. She eyed her candy and put in a pack of Circus Peanuts, whatever they were. Chocolate was the only thing she liked. Eventually she placed a red two on the pile.

"My turn!" Zoey exclaimed and put another lollipop into the middle. She grinned as she put down a Draw Four. "Simong has to draw four!"

Which he does and for the next round throws in some pencils and stickers.

The game progresses until he catches Zoey nodding. He's been managing his pile all evening to make sure of this. "Okay, kiddo. All in."

Zoey eyed him. This was a trick to get all of her candy. She looked at the two cards in her hand and then at her pile of candy. "I'm in."
