All Hallow's Eve (Defenders)
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

In Los Angeles and Hollywood it could be said that every day was like Halloween. People were always dressed up and most were costumes. On Halloween just about everyone dressed up, not just the normal ones.

"You worry about everything," he murmurs. The kiss on the cheek he should have seen coming, but...Yeah, back away from that thought. She doesn't need a hero and you don't need to be anymore of one. "For -" He wills his mouth to move. "For what?"

"Worrying is in the job descriptions," she said. "For earlier with Zoey and for this. It's nice to know someone has my back." Syd adored her sister, but Bryn was at best flighty. She helped with Zoey when she could, but her sister wasn't exactly the reliable type. Syd hadn't really had someone she could turn to since her parents had died.

Teammate? Okay, that he could do. He relaxes and swings her into the room. The curiosity has been killing him so he will check out how she has it decorated and everything while he's in here.

"You don't have to go for the Oscar for best supporting worrier," he quips. "Zoey runs the place. You run Zoey. See? Problem solved."

Syd's room was decorated if by books being scattered all over the place counted as decorated. Books littered the top of the dresser, the nightstand, the floor and even a few were on the bed. The only items outside of books were two photographs in frames and a small second hand tv with DVD player.

Syd chuckled a little. "Zoey's the easy one to deal with. I don't need to worry about her destroying things or running off to see if there really are aliens in Area 51. Which apparently there is."

He senses the opportunity to play with power tools this Christmas. It's less girly then he thought. Somehow, in his imagination, there was a collection of little perfume bottle or little candles that smell nice and never get lit. This room is...kinda sadly utilitarian. There's little in here outside of the pictures that says "Syd," around here.

"Give her another 5 years." Then he winces. "Nope sorry, you didn't hear that. Go to sleep. Zoey can remain eight forever right now."

Years of barely scraping by had taught her not to buy frivolous things like perfume and candles. It was ingrained by now and she would never think to buy those things even if she did have a little extra money now. Books though were a different story. They were her passion and a room full of books were her.

She winced with him. "Yeah, I didn't hear that." Then she smiled. "Goodnight, Simon."

He takes off her shoes and moves the covers over her. "Night, Syd." He closes the door and shakes his head.

...Yeah. Drinking and dancing sound great right now.
