A 'proper' New York Welcome
They'd been in New York a few days, and Giovanna had had to admit it could have been a lot worse. She'd thought of plenty of ways it could, after all.
And now they were walking back to their hotel in the twilight after getting a nice healthy dinner.

The street they were on at the moment was pretty sparse, but they weren't walking alone.
Which, Giovanna decided after a certain amount of attention to detail, was unfortunate.

She adjusted pace and positioning, speaking to Andrew in Italian. They hadn't been using Italian that day. That was, of course, the point. "Stay to my left."

"Oh believe me, I am very well acquainted with mom's reactions when I end up like this. I'm not answering the phone for a while."

She nods. "Tomorrow night, let's just order in."

"That sounds like a great idea. And I need to put some clothes in here fit for this form. Never know what will happen, I guess."

"Probably for the best, yes. At least you don't have to worry much about getting too cold, in the meantime."

"Yeah, its comfortable and all, just takes some getting used to the shift in perspective. I like that ordering in idea too... always get such an appetite when I switch."

"Hmm? Pizza? Chinese?" A pause. "...Andrew?"

" I ..." Giovanna starts to say, looking at him rather intently for a moment.
And then the telephone rang. She looked away quickly and picked it up. "Hello? Yes, Father. Yes, we just got in; there was a minor incident -- Yes, we're fine..."

Well, that was... a thing. What was she about to say? He knows what he'd like her to have said, but that can't possibly be it, totally ridiculous. It was probably some warning about being more careful, she couldn't protect him if he took so many risks and went out in public so often, all the rest. That had to be it.

Or more likely, maybe she wanted to go back to Genosha. Even more likely. He knew she didn't like it here much. And he knew he was a handful.

He'll miss her. Terribly.

"That was quick. I'm surprised if he heard and didn't get a call right away that he didn't show up and tear up Manhattan."

After some more explanation and a sequence of "No, Father"s and "Yes, Father"s, she got off the phone.

She grinned and shook her head a little. "Just the usual morning call." But if she'd neglected to tell him outright that there'd been an incident, it would have become a problem.

So maybe she's not leaving? That's good, at least. She was his best caretaker, his best friend. More, maybe?

"Gio, I, uhm..."

She didn't think of him that way. He was business, loyalty, maybe, maybe friends, when she wasn't annoyed with his habits.

"Yeah, how about Chinese?"

Coward.

"...Chinese it is, then."

There was a lot more at stake than their friendship, Giovanna figured. What they were doing was Very Important. And if she made things too awkward for them to work together, she didn't know if she could trust whoever else tried to keep an eye on Andrew to do it right! Not to mention, on top of that, how ashamed her parents would be if she disrupted things with stupid presumption.

"...You know, for future reference, once you've got the wardrobe for it, and if there's a reasonable place to do so, you should get more practice like that. Just on principle."

"Maybe I should. Grandfather says the same thing, and has offered to help me a time or two, but its difficult to schedule. I'm busy a lot, and it requires some help to do comfortably. I guess I can always electrocute myself, but that still is kind of awkward. But if you wanted to help me with that too... I mean, I know my family already asks a lot of you and all, but you are well suited for it. And a lot more skilled than I am."

She keeps looking through the phone book as she talks, her voice saturated in very obvious irony. "Oh, yes, you all ask so much, helping out one of my best friends when he's doing something very important. Ma foi, that's really calling in a lot of favors, considering."

'One of my best friends' was a safe enough term, she'd decided.

"You shouldn't have to go with the electrical sockets." She flashed him her best 'don't be silly' smile and continued. "And thank you. I've got a lot of practice with that sort of thing."

"You make it sound like I asked for a wake up call or help carrying my books. Gio, you're risking your life being here and looking after me." He replies, switching to French.

"You've been my bodyguard before, I know, but always at home. You're already going above and beyond, and spending a lot of your own time keeping an eye on me just because I'd wander into the street with my nose in a book if someone didn't. You're my dearest friend." Yeah, that seems safe enough.

"I don't want to risk that by asking too much of you when you do so much already."

Oh, now that internal sighing was just undignified.

"Yes. We're risking our lives because it's important. And making sure you're in a position to do your best at it is a perfectly good use of my time," she says earnestly.

And then just looks at him for a moment before pulling herself together.

"I don't want risk anything either." No kidding. "So please note that you're not asking; I'm saying that we're going to make time for that."

"Then we'll do it your way. You have this way of knowing what's best for me... which I appreciate."

True, but not the way he'd like to have said it. Coward.

"I really do appreciate it, Gio. Thank you, for everything."

Giovanna looked up at him -- considerably up, as he was a foot taller than her at the moment -- and smiled. "I'm glad it doesn't come across wrong."

She set a hand on his, although that might have qualified as a bad move. "You're welcome."

He turns his hand and gives hers a gentle squeeze, being very careful at his current size and strength. Bad move, maybe, but the last thing he wants to do is put her off.

"Of course not, you're always welcome. I'm glad for everything you do." Which is definitely true.

She smiled. "Let us hope you'll still be glad when I'm waking you up too early in the morning to get that practice in."

And she'll actually call for that Chinese food now.

Yeah, Chinese food good.

She manages to hide the blush while ordering. Then, once off the phone, she remembers a nice shiny topic she'd occasionally thought of addressing.

"Well, speaking of things to make the time for, I was...um... thinking of making use of the nearest video store this weekend, when it's time to put All This aside for the day. Somewhere, somehow, there has to be a film adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo that gets the ending right."
