It took almost a week before Ryan could force himself to call the number that Shroud had given him. As soon as he had mentioned that his name was Ryan and that Moon Knight had trained him the person on the other side of the line had told him to come by Avengers HQ which is where Ryan found himself now having just walked through the doors to the building.

"Not everyone's a powerhouse," Charlie said, "Not everyone can freeze time time or have a high-tech suit."

"Can't you just hear the sour grapes in his voice?" Sammy asked Ryan. "We'll show you around the common areas and once Cap talks to you, you'll get a full tour."

"Hey, no sour grapes here," Charlie held up his hands.

"Sure that sounds like a plan short tour followed by meeting Captain America," says Ryan, "Ok so I know what sam can do, but what exactly can you do Charlie?"

Sammy blinked a moment at that, her smile never wavering. "Charlie can introduce you to Cap since he calls him Dad."

"Well Sammy went and spilled the beans there," Charlie said, "Though it was probably going to come out sooner or later." He shrugged. "My reflexes, speed, strength, and durability are higher than the average human being's, but not to what I'd call the super-level. I've also been trained in martial arts, acrobatics, weapons proficiency, marksmanship, and oh yeah, shield fighting."

“Can’t say I’m all that surprised with the shield and the family resemblance but that’s good to know,” Ryan replies. “Well should we start the tour or is there anything else important I should know?”

"Eh, beans shmeans. You're carrying a shield, ya damn yahoo."

"Now then, The Tour. The main floor is mostly common areas." Sammy gestured for him to follow her from the foyer. She bypassed the grand staircase and crossed into the main dining hall. "Living quarters for members that need them are upstairs. Most of the junior team members eat at home with their families or in the kitchen. The library/rec room is to the right. It's kept pretty well stocked."

Charlie smirked. "The libary may be too the right, but the living room to the left has to have the best video game supply on the whole damn planet."

“Wow, a great library, a stocked kitchen and a room devoted to video games this place really does have everything,” says Ryan amusedly while looking around, “But this must mean you guys train like crazy. So I hope this mean that there’s a hot tub somewhere around here.”

"There have been many Avengers over the years and they have kids. The mansion is kept well stock because you just don't know who will be coming for dinner," Sammy said. "The jacuzzi and sauna are part of the training facilities that Cap and Charlie will show you once you've talked to him."

She resisted the urge to kick Charlie's ankle and moved the tour toward the kitchen. "The real head of the household is Jarvis. He takes care of us and we are very careful not to make him angry."

“Yeah, I know, the nicer you are to the people that prepare your food the more you get and the less likely it is to be spit into,” replies Ryan.

As they continue on the tour Ryan asks, “So do you have any idea what Captain American wants to talk to me about? Because I was just told to come by as soon as I could and not told anything other than that.”

"No idea," Charlie said with a shrug. "Dad can be pretty cryptic when he wants to be."

"Because he's the head of the Avengers," Sammy said. "And he oversees the Young Avengers. That's all the reason he needs to talk to you, see what you can do before you join. He also needs to know that you can survive us, and that we can survive you."

"Public conference is through there."

“Great I get to take tests, because I was really missed that during winter break,” says Ryan sarcastically, “But at least it’s can’t be as bad as theoretical calculus.”

The sarcasm rubbed Sammy wrong. Sure, the team had a lot of fun, but what they did as a team was serious business.

"Then maybe you're looking for a different sort of team to join," she said with ice in her voice. "This one has to depend on each other to stay alive at times. If you're going to complain to a couple of complete strangers about a few evaluative tests after you asked to come here, you're not going to make it through our training sessions and earn anybody's trust."

“Sorry at the about the fact that I make jokes when I’m nervous, because your right I did ask to be here and typically the Avengers ask you to join them not the other way around so if I had to guess the only reason why I’m even being considered is because of the fact that Moon Knight trained in how to fight. So I’m very nervous being completely out of my element having spent most of my life very sheltered from heroes compared to you and now I’m standing in the Avengers HQ to try out for a chance to learn from them,” admitted Ryan both to Sam and to himself.

“But don’t get me wrong I do understand the value of these test because they tell you guys if I even stand a chance of surviving what you go through and a regular basis both physically and mentally. Believe me when I say that I understand why you do these tests, and I hope that you can understand why I would crack a joke to keep from getting nervous,” says Ryan trying to explain himself.

"I understand feeling nervous about the tests and why you were called here," Charlie said, folding his arms over his chest. "But nervous or not, you still have to take this seriously. What we do is not for the faint of heart."

"We didn't call him. He called here and inquired." She pinned Ryan with a look. "We already have a stupid joke member of the team. And it is harder than theoretical calculus."

“I know how dangerous this business can be,” Says Ryan remembering all the stories of close calls that both his Mom and Dad had told him over the years, “and when I start the tests I will be taking them seriously. These stupid jokes happen to be both a useful combat strategy and help with calming nerves, and to theoretical calculus let’s agree to disagree.”

Charlie rubbed his temples. This could get ugly. "C'mon," he said, placing a firm hand on Sammy's shoulder. "Let's find Dad."
