After three days, Jack realized he hadn't seen Kalypso or at least heard from her. He called the Avengers Mansion to see if everything was okay and if they were on an extended mission. Three nights of restless nightmares told him that something was off and it had to be her absence. There was something missing that he couldn't put his finger on, but he believed that it would resolve itself once he saw her.

Jarvis told him that Miss Kalypso was indeed staying at the mansion but nothing more than that. Jack decided to show up that evening.

The night Jack Murdock died was starless, hot and muggy.

Halfway through his nightly patrol, he found himself chased through a school yard and cornered by a silent group of black clad figures. He was stabbed several times in the fight that followed, but not before he took several of his attackers down. There were too many of them, too well trained in a familiar combat style. Too late he realized who and what they were and why they had hunted him down. He had just enough left in him to send a burst of warning over the mental connection he shared with Kalypso before the pain and darkness fogged his mind and stole his last breath.

The last thing he heard before he died was a whispered promise in a language he didn't understand. "You will serve a higher purpose."

When he returned home a week later, it was without any memory of where he'd been or what had happened to him.
