"You don't have to come if you don't want to," he said, smiling at him. "Cepheus is probably bringing your brother."

Rex gave her a sad look. "Don't worry about it." He told her and shrugged. "I'm not ashamed of who I am or what I do. I'm ashamed that people have to be like that. Did you only bring me here to make your parents mad?"

"When I was looking him up, I found things where he was with girls." Merlin sighed. "If he does break her heart, I have ways of breaking him."

"No, I brought you because you offered to come and I didn't have a date," Lavinia said, shrugging. "Honestly, I should have thought everything through a little better. They're ridiculous. People should be judged by their character and aspirations, not their profession."

Lavinia didn't understand the kiss at all. She blinked at Rex in surprise for a moment, then decided that it was probably just... him being friendly. "Yeah," she said. "Red wine, please. Alcohol is good for these parties, trust me."

Rex nodded and moved away. He felt stupid for kissing her, but her lips had felt good. He sighed to himself for a moment, grabbing her a drink. He walked back with two glasses. "Here you are. How long does it take you to get drunk?"

"I think I can manage being sober enough to remember where I live," Lavinia said, laughing. "If I'm not you can just leave me in your car for the night. Or leave me with my dad, I guess." Cepheus led James into the building and took a quick look around, smiling when some photographers snapped a few pictures of them. "Well. Okay." He laughed, looking around. "They'll be writing about us going on a date tomorrow."

"I know," James said, smiling at Cepheus as more people took photos of them. "But now it's going to be even harder to convince my teammates that we're not together. Do you want to say hello to your fathers?"

"Don't do that to yourself," Lavinia said, frowning at Rex. "Don't internalize their shit. None of this has anything to do with you. It has everything to do with them being too stupid to see that you're a really decent person. Do you want to get out of here? We could just eat sweets."

"We talked," Scorpius said, running a hand through his hair. "We talked a lot, actually. It was pretty obvious to him that I had no idea what I was doing and we talked about our careers in the morning. He's not a bad person."
