Shay, Elijah
Everything felt so surreal. Being ushered out of the house with the others, blankets wrapped around them all because it was the dead of winter and none of them had jackets or coats. The cold air was biting, and Elijah's tears nearly froze to his cheeks. It had been so long since he'd been outside that he didn't even know how to cope with the scent of the trees or the crisp feeling of the wind.

He tried to answer as many questions as possible. Emma was very sweet, and she hadn't tried to seperate Elijah from Shay. The parademics looked them all over, but Elijah hardly remembered any of it. It felt so strange to be in a moving vehicle. It felt so strange to think that he wasn't Adam's anymore.

Who was he, then?

At the hospital, he got a more thorough check. He'd been extensively examined, and being seperated from Shay and the others left him feeling impossibly anxious. Everyone's family would be coming. Murphy's parents, Vegas, his boyfriend. Parker's boyfriend. Shay's mother. Elijah had no one at all coming, and he didn't know what to do with himself or how to feel.

After Shay had been examined, she'd arranged for him to be put in the same room as Elijah. The boys were all in pretty good condition, save for Murphy because of his asthma. But they'd all be able to go home with their families. Even though Shay had insisted that Elijah could go with him, Elijah couldn't help but feel terrified that something would happen to make him change his mind. The thought of being alone was scary, even though he'd been alone almost his whole life it seemed.

Elijah finally took a slow sip, savoring the taste of the juice in his mouth. Adam had given him orange juice before, but it had been quite a while. Enjoying a beverage was so simple, but it felt anything but simple to Elijah right then.

"I don't want to think about him right now. I just want you, and my violin," he said softly. He'd very specifically asked one of the agents to grab it as they were led out of the basement. "Did they grab it for me?"

He had considered not using his old camera ever again. He wanted a new one. But when he really thought about it, that camera had been a good deal of the joy he'd found in that place. Maybe he didn't want to throw it away.

"I'm sure they did. I want you to play for me. I want to hear you outside of that house. I wonder what they'll do with it, you know? Will they sell that house? Tear it down?" He tried to imagine the real estate listing for that place.

He didn't have time to mull it over too much because his mother burst into the room, just as tall and lanky as Shay. She looked just like him and was as boisterous and energetic as her son. "Oh my god. Oh my god! Shay! Baby! My baby!" She grabbed him and wrapped him in a bone crushing hug.

Elijah couldn't imagine getting a new violin. He'd always had just the one, always taken great care of it. It'd brought him a lot of joy growing up, and even though he had to play for Adam, the man hadn't taken that love for the violin away.

He opened his mouth to say something back to Shay, but when he heard the door burst open and heard a woman's voice saying Shay's name nearly hysterically, he paused in surprise. He went quiet and just listened to the two of them, almost feeling as if he were intruding on a very private moment.

"Mom. Mom. Ma!" he kept trying to get her attention through all of her commotion. Eventually, she listened and even realize there was another boy in the room. "Mom, this is Elijah. He's going to come home with us, okay? He was there with me and I love him."

Marcy was the type of woman who didn't need to be told twice to open her arms to someone new. If Shay loved him, she loved him. She was a caretaker at heart. "Elijah?" she said, wiping tears away from her face. "You were there too? Was it awful? Oh, sweetheart, you're so young. You're both so young. How could anyone do this to you?" She reached forward and gathered Elijah up in her arms and gave him a tight hug.

When Marcy pulled Elijah into a hug, it was obvious that he wasn't at all prepared for that sort of thing. At first he didn't know what to do, and he held his orange juice awkwardly with one hand while his other wrapped around the woman. She smelled nice, and felt warm, and he liked the sound of love she carried in her voice.

"Hi," he said quietly, "It's nice to meet you, we talked about you a lot. Are you sure it's all right that I come with you? My Mom died when I was younger and I don't really... have a place," he added nervously.

She leaned back and put both of her hands on either side of Elijah's face, trying to capture his gaze before she realized she couldn't. "Of course it's all right. We have a spare room and a couch and--" she glanced back at Shay. "Will you be sharing the spare room?"

Shay nodded, suddenly a little shy. He'd told her that he loved him, but there was something else about telling your mom you'd be sharing a room. It was different somehow. Marcy just smiled. "Well good, because I watch television on the couch late at night and I suspect both of you will be tired." She pulled Elijah back into a hug before reaching and grabbing Shay to get him in there as well.

There was a lot about her that reminded Elijah of his own mother, though most memories of her could be a bit hazy. He remembered a feeling something like this, though, one of security and acceptance. He'd really missed that feeling.

"Thank you," he said softly as he held onto the both of them, and he couldn't help but feel overwhelmed with thankfulness. He was very, very lucky.

Shay couldn't quite ingest all of it, but he was doing a good job of letting most of it sink in. A year and a few months was a long time, but not compared to what Elijah had gone through. He kept a hold of both of them for a few moments before pulling back and looking at the two of them. It was probably the happiest sight he'd seen in a long time and he wished he had a camera.

"Honey, I know it isn't any of your fancy stuff, but I brought the old Polaroid from when you were little." Marcy seemed to be reading her son's mind and she dug in her purse to pull out the clunky old thing. Film was impossible to come by, but she'd bought up as much as she could back when they discontinued it. She had a few packs in her purse too.

Face lighting up, Shay took the camera and loaded film into it as easy as taking a breath. "I love this old thing!" he said with glee. "You'll like it, Elijah. It makes the coolest sounds." He snapped a picture and delighted in the clack-whirrr of the film ejecting a picture.

Elijah almost wanted to cry. Everything was perfect, everything felt perfect, and that was absolutely terrifying to him. He smiled a little tearfully and sniffed some as he listened to the exchange between the two. It was so sweet how well Shay's Mom knew him.

"You're very sweet," Lijah told the woman, his voice soft.

Shay and his charmed life were used to perfect. Maybe that's why he'd been so resilient and hopeful under Adam's thumb. Marcy beamed and patted Elijah's cheek. Shay snapped another picture of that and laughed a little. Maybe it wasn't fair that he was doing so well while others might not be, but he wasn't going to apologize to the world for that.

"When does out flight leave, Ma?" Shay was eager to get out of the hospital and quite frankly, anxious to get as far away from that house as he could. He could imagine Adam coming back to it, furious and hell bent on getting them back.

Elijah smiled tearfully and turned his head in Shay's direction before he extended a hand out to him. It was easy to grasp a hold of Shay's hand, as if somehow Lijah knew exactly where it'd be.

"Do they have to keep my violin?" he asked softly. "I'd like to play for you and your Mom sometimes."

Marcy excused herself from the room and Shay knew exactly what she was aiming at. He squeezed Elijah's hand. "She'll either have it back tonight, or have a date for its imminent return." Not many people were able to deny Marcy and when she didn't get her way the first time, no one had the balls to deny her twice.

With his mom gone, Shay tugged Elijah back to sit on the hospital bed with him. "Do you want to stay in New Jersey? I mean in the long term. I meant what I said back there; we can go anywhere you want."

"I really like her," Elijah said honestly with a soft smile once Marcy had left. He held onto Shay's hand tightly and lifted his free hand up to gently touch the side of the other boy's face. He loved the way it felt to touch Shay, he liked how warm and soft the other boy's skin was. "I just wanna be where you are, that's all. You're home to me."

Shay closed his eyes, concentrating on how good that felt. It still felt like they might be living on borrowed time, as if they'd only been let out of the cages for a little while. It was surreal to be able to feel elijah anytime he wanted. turning his head a little, he kissed and hummed against Elijah's hand.

"Jersey for awhile then. Then maybe New York. Or Seattle. Or London." He felt like he could do anything with the boy against him.

"Anywhere you want," Elijah said with a smile.

He was starting to feel better, more confident that this was reality and not some fantasy. It was a little scary, especially knowing that Adam was still out there, but Elijah just wanted to let himself feel happy for once.

"We have no clothes," he said after a moment. "I imagine your Mom has some for you, you're a little taller than me but maybe I can borrow some."

Shay let out a laugh. How easy it was to completely forget about practical things like clothes. "Actually I think she has some from when I was younger too. I was always growing out of clothes." Sometimes it seemed like he'd never stop growing, limbs just getting longer and longer.

Marcy came back in looking a little disappointed. "That nice Agent Bishop promises that your violin will get shipped back to you in a couple of days. That's the fastest he says he can get it out of evidence. I've got a flight back to New Jersey lined up for tonight. Do you boys feel up to travel?" She'd change it if they needed some rest. Shay glanced at Elijah and then nodded. "I think we can make it. We can sleep on the plane. I just really want to go home."

Elijah very much liked the idea of wearing Shay's clothes. There was something comforting about being wrapped up in something of Shay's constantly, and he was looking forward to that comfort.

"That's okay, just as long as I get it back. It's the only one I have, my mother got it for me when I was six," he told Marcy when she came back in the room with news of his violin. He held onto Shay's hand and gave a squeeze. "I've never flown before. I've only been on buses."

"Really?" he was surprised to hear that. "I actually don't fly that much. Mostly to visit my gramma in Texas." He did a lot of his work online, and he was to the point in his career when photoshoots came to him if he really wanted.

Marcy looked at her watch. "Good, good. We should get going boys. The doctor has discharged you both and I have a taxi waiting out front to take us to the airport."

"I'd like to stop in on Murphy," Elijah said. "Can you write down your number so that I can give it to him?" he asked Marcy softly.

He waited until he felt the piece of paper pressed into his hand before he let Shay lead him to Murphy's room. He left Shay by the door for a few minutes before he returned with a sad sigh.

"He's sad," he said softly. "Your turn, I'll wait here." He knew that Shay would want to check in on Murphy as well.

He leaned against the wall while Shay slipped into the room. Elijah reached out a hand to take a hold of Marcy's and he smiled sadly.

"Thank you, he saved me in there you know, but I'm sad we had to meet that way," he said softly.

She liked that Elijah wanted to hold her hand and she put her other hand on top of his and rubbed it comfortingly. "I'm sure you saved him too, dear. I've been waiting for him to find someone to love. If he had to go to a dark place to do it, then that's just how it happened."

Shay wanted to check on Murphy, but he'd been dreading it. When he came back out, he didn't say anything about it, feeling rather dreary. Marcy led the way out to the taxi, sheparding them inside.

The airport was overwhelming, and Shay just wanted to close his eyes and not see any of it. But when he shut his eyes, the sounds just got louder and he drew Elijah closer to him.

Elijah was astounded bus just how genuine and sweet Marcy was. It made his chest ache because she made him miss his own mother, or what memories he had of her, anyway. At least he had Marcy in his life, now, and Shay.

Being whisked to the airport was surreal. Elijah had always had his ID with him, even locked up, but Shay's mother brought his ID. He assumed Callaway had Parker's, and Murphy's family had his. He held onto Shay for dear life as they were ushered through the airport, and he fell asleep on the plane. By the time he wokeup, they were landing.

Shay, although tired, hadn't slept a wink on the flight. Once Elijah had fallen asleep, Shay continued to speak to his mother in quiet tones all through the flight. He was talking a mile a minute, trying to fill her in on everything that had happened, avoiding some of the very bad things. But that was Shay, get it out and get it over with. Talking was his own best therapy.

Once landed, Shay felt much better for having talked with his mother. He leaned over and kissed Elijah's cheek before helping the three of them off the plane, his loud and boisterous self. "Coming through!" he said with a moderate amount of glee. Marcy didn't exactly have luggage, so baggage claim was avoidable and before he knew it, they were in a taxi home. Home, Shay thought to himself. He would miss his studio, but home was where he stayed at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Home was where he went when he got sick so his mom could take care of him.

The house itself was rather small, but newly built and nicely furnished. Shay had made a down payment on it for his mother once he was getting paid well and had been helping with the mortgage payments every now and again when she needed it. Going inside, Shay took Elijah's hand and raced them up to the spare bedroom, which was mostly just Shay's room since Marcy didn't have guests stay over all that much.

Elijah was still half asleep by the time they got to the house. He loved how warm it felt, and it smelled sweet. Like gingerbread. He found himself wondering if maybe Marcy had baked a batch of gingerbread cookies earlier in the day as he was tugged upstairs. His hair was sticking up everywhere, and the look on his face said that he was still very sleepy.

Once they were in Shay's room, he lifted a hand up and pressed his palm flat against the wall. He liked the texture of it, and he revelled in the coolness of it. A real wall. No chain link fences.

"It smells nice in here," he said softly with a smile, "It smells like you, faintly, but it does."

"I love that you can smell me." It was clear from his voice that he was beaming. He flopped down on the familiar bed. "I used to stay here a lot. Guess I'll be staying here some more, right?" He was in a brilliant mood, so resiliant that it seemed as if he'd never been in the basement dungeon of a serial kidnapper.

"Do you think Murphy or Parker will call?" he mused out loud, already wondering about what they were up to.

Elijah followed the sound of Shay's voice, and when he knew that he was close, he sat down on the edge of the bed and reached out to brush his fingers against the side of Shay's jaw.

"I think they will," he said softly. "This is so strange. Your bed is huge," he added with an amused smile.
