Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ginny and Ron
When: Sunday Oct 12th, afternoon, following practice
Where: Quidditch Pitch
What: Just a bit of sibling bonding
Rating: PG (as if Ron would let it get worse. Ginny's just a baby!)
Status: Complete

Ginny put her broom beside her and stretched out on the ground, looking up at Ron with a squint. He really had come into his own as a Quidditch player, though his confidence was so mercurial, and it affected his play so much. It wasn't like that for Ginny: once she stepped onto the pitch, the real world melted away. All there was in the world was this game; even Harry stopped being her Harry, Ron stopped being her brother. The game was separate from everything else, and she loved how freeing it felt. Charlie said he felt that way, too. How in the world were they related to Ron?

She smiled at her brother affectionately, though, and broke off a piece of grass, enjoying the quiet that had settled after practice and the chance to just talk with Ron for a bit. It had been a bit too long since she had been alone with him, and they had a few things to discuss. "That was a good practice. We're going to win this year, I know it," she said confidently.

Ron looked over at Ginny and shrugged. "Linda came onto me, Ginny. Said she wanted to see if what Lavender said was right." He played with a bit of grass between his fingers. "I'm a bloke. I'm not about to turn down a snog." He shrugged again, not sure how else to explain it.

"And what do you mean someone else? Who else is there?" He looked at her confused. She couldn't possibly mean Bianca because no one knew about that. He wasn't sure who she was referring to.

Ginny flopped back down, slapping a hand over her face. Boys. Boys! She could live five hundred years and never understand them. Why couldn't someone write a spell to make her understand boys? Maybe that could be Hermione's next project...

She sighed, opening her eyes and looking at him. "Well, you know, getting a snog in is fine and all, yeah, but Ron...there are some wonderful girls that you know? That perhaps if you took the initiative, came on to them, you'd perhaps find...more than just a snog in them, hmm?" she said gently, her tone suggestive.

Get the clue, Ron...

Ron looked at her even more confused. "What the bloody hell are you talking about? Which girls?" He really had no diea who she was referring to. She couldn't possibly mean Hermione because Hermione would never see him that way. She'd never fancy him. She was far too good for him and plus, she could have international quidditch players like Krum, why would she choose him over that?

"What are you going on about?"

"Don't you have friends that you fancy?" she said, an exasperated note creeping into her voice. "I mean, Harry and I were friends before we started up, yeah? You know what they say: friends make the best lovers." She held up a hand and quickly added, "Not lovers in the literal sense, don't get bollocksed."

"Friends? Like who? Harry? I DON'T FANCY HARRY!" He really was oblivious. Of course she meant HErmione but he wasn't about to think he might have a chance with her and them have himself get all disapointed and upset because in the end he didn't. Really. It was a setup for disapointment.

"You're mad, Gin. Me, fancy Harry." He shook his head, laughing a bit. He wasn't gay! He was straight as an arrow.

She sat up and gave him a hard smack on the head. "That's right, Ron, I was prodding you to fancy my boyfriend, how did you know!" she snapped. "It's my goal, to make my sixth year into a gigantic story from 'All My Wizards.' Bloody brilliant, Ron," she said witheringly, smacking him again. "Are you really that much of a prat?"

Ron sighed, knowing he was going to have to admit it to someone sooner or later. It was gettiong hard to keep it bottled up especially when he knew he had no chance with the object of his affections. Hell, he'd only realized the year before how he felt about her and now, he had to tell someone or he'd burst.

"Fine. Yes, I fancy Hermione." He said softly, picking at the grass again to keep his hands busy and looking down at the ground. "I think I might love her."

Ginny's head whirled with twenty different comments; usually with her brothers, affection was doled out through sarcasm and teasing--and Ginny wanted to fit in, so she adopted it to be one of the boys. But not now. This moment was different.

Her eyes softened, and she gave her brother a tender look. "How long have you known?" she asked quietly, crossing her legs and plucking another blade of grass for herself.

Ron shrugged, not really sure when it occurred to him that he was falling in love with Hermione but he definitely knew he'd fancied her for years and only just realized the year before.

"A while." He said, looking at Ginny then back at his hands. He was glad to have someone to talk to about it. He wasn't sure if Harry would want to hear about this stuff since Hermione was like his sister.

"I know what that's like," she said simply, shrugging, her smile rueful. She let a moment pass and ripped the blade very carefully in half. Ginny swallowed and opened her mouth, breathing for a second before asking, "Has it been getting bigger lately?"

Ron nodded immediately. It was only recently that he figured out he was falling in love. Before it had only been fancying Hermione and now, now he had the feeling he wanted to be with her forever. Too bad she'd never feel the same way.

"Yeah." He said simply, not used to talking about his feelings. "Bigger and harder." He added softly.

"Maybe it's a sign, Ron," Ginny said encouragingly, gently letting her knuckles touch his leg. "That you shouldn't just keep it inside, if it's too large to ignore."

Ron shook his head. "Hermione doesn't fancy me, Ginny. She never will." She looked down at that sentence, hated how it felt to say it and know it was true. "She could have Viktor Krum. Why would she want me?" It was something he asked himself all the time and he knew the answer. She wouldn't want him.

"Anyway, I'm not good enough for her. She deserves better." He shrugged a bit, speaking very softly because saying the words made it hurt even more.

Ginny blinked a few times. So much to respond to there... She ran a hand through her long hair, exhaling a bit as she considered how to best deal with this. And shaking him good and hard didn't seem to be an option...

She licked her lips and began, "But Hermione isn't with Viktor. She's told you this a hundred times: she's turned him down. You have to ask yourself why, yeah? What's making her say no to the Viktor Krum," she prodded. Because of you, she silently added. But she couldn't: she cared too much for Hermione to say something like that to Ron.

"Ron? You're my brother, and I love you, and I'm not saying this to shite you," she said firmly, "but you are one of the best men I know, and Hermione would be honoured to be with someone as brave and loving as you. She'd be lucky."

Ron felt his face flush at Ginny's compliments. They'd never really spoken to each other about this stuff before and they hadn't really paid each other those kinds of compliments either. It was a bit odd but still nice, of course. Especially nice to hear from Ginny.

"Thanks, Gin." He said softly with a smile, pulling her over to him to give her a one armed, loving and brotherly hug.

Ginny smiled. Fred and George would be right naffed if they knew there was tender hugging between Weasleys that didn't involve their mum, but...Ginny was Molly's daughter, after all. Besides, she got to be caring and soft with her friends; it was nice to be this way with Ron, too.

"Anytime, Ron. And I meant it," she added, rubbing his back.
