Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Ron Weasley and Harry Potter
WHEN: Evening, After dinner and before bed
WHERE: Kitchens
SUMMARY: Ron and Harry sneak down for a snack
RATING: G?
STATUS: In progress

After skiving off his homework for the evening and going for a fly outside (flying in the dark was just as fun as flying in the rain), Ron decided he wasn't quite tired enough for bed but he didn't want to resort to doing homework to keep him busy. So, on a mission to find his best friend, he returned to the common room, hoping Harry might be up for a trip down to the kitchens for a late night snack.

Bounding up the stairs, he threw open the dorm door and looked towards Harry's bed. The curtains were closed as usual but he called out anyways.

"Oi, mate, you in there? Feel like a sneak down to the kitchens?"

Harry grinned, shaking his head. "Dobby? Are you busy?" he called out, looking around for the elf that become his friend.

With a crack, Dobby appeared before them. "Harr - " he began, and Harry quickly cut him off.

"Don't say my name," he begged, glancing around nervously. He glanced at Ron, his cheeks turning red. "The house elves - they - are very grateful," he mumbled, looking down.

"Oh yes," Dobby said slavishly. "We owe -"

"Er - it's okay, Dobby," Harry interrupted again, smiling at the elf in complete embarrassment. He looked around, noticing a few elves spotting he and Ron. Harry rushed, "Ron and I were hoping to skive a few snacks yeah? Are there any bangers and mash laying about? And Ron - Ron wants cake. Please," he said, looking at Ron for him to elaborate.

Ron took Harry's cue and looked down at the eager elf. "Er, yeah, vanilla if you've got it. Or chocolate. Doesn't matter really. Though I prefer vanilla." When it came to food, Ron always took precision in his choices. Food was far too important to him.

"Maybe some punpkin juice too?" He asked hopefully. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a couple sickles and handed them to Dobby. "For helping us." He told him, thinking Hermione would be proud and may kill him if he didn't offer.

"Oh, no sir," Dobby gasped, shoving the money back at Ron as if the coins were on fire. "It is an honour to serve - him and his friends."

"Dobby," Harry said pleadingly, but the elf already hurried off. Harry rubbed his eyes and looked at Ron, chagrined. "He just - is so incredibly selfless. I can't imagine having that kind of devotion." He stuffed his hands into his pockets and added quietly, "I just don't deserve that. I don't know - how to make him stop."

Ron shrugged. "Least we can tell Hermione we tried to pay him." Stuffing the coins back in his pocket, he ran a hand through his hair.

"It's just the way house elves are in general, mate. Well, most of them anyhow. Dobby's just a bit extreme. He still feel in debt to you for that whole freeing him thing way back when."

"But he tried to save my life, how could I not?" Harry countered, leaning against the wall. He could feel himself slipping back into the sticky place that made him want to crawl into a lonely area and hide away, so he forced himself to grin at Ron, mentally flipping to another subject.

And not Quidditch. After today's practise, I think I'm slightly hated for how brutal the drills were. "Have you got everything squared away with Hermione for the Ball?" he asked, a slightly mischievous glint lighting in his eyes.

Ron instantly went slightly red at the mention of Hermione and he turned and fiddled with some utensils on a nearby council to hide it so Harry wouldn't see. Why'd he always blush when she was mentioned? Hell, why did he always blush in general?

"Guess so, yeah." He said softly, not looking at Harry still. "Dunno what's gotta be arranged but I think we're good."

Harry tried to swallow back a smile, struggling to keep a placid expression. "Does it hurt, when your cheeks go that red? I've always meant to ask Gin if it burns when you blush that hard," he remarked mildly.

He turned even redder at that remark and Ron's hands flew up to his face, rubbing furiously at the red and willing it to go down, please go down.

"No it does not." He said in a huff. "I can't help it you know. Must be some kind of Weasley trait." He grumbled a bit, now horribly embarrassed.

Harry made a neutral kind of hum, nodding absently. "Yeah. See she blushes when she's either so angry she's about to alight on fire or when she's embarrassed or when she's very pleased." He paused, considering Ron. "You don't seem angry. So which of the other two is it?" he asked with an innocent smile.

"Well, I'm definitely not pleased, you git." Ron said, giving Harry a look that said it was the embarrassment thing but that he wasn't mad at him for bringing it up or anything. Just, like he said, embarrassed.

"Stupid blush." He said, reaching up and rubbing at his cheeks and ears once more.

"Stupid reason for the blushing," Harry countered.

He looked at Ron for a moment and then began to laugh. "Ah mate, it'll sort itself out. Hopefully. Finally," he added, shaking his head a bit.

"Yeah, yeah." Ron said, finally feeling the heat leave his cheeks and the redness presumably go down.

"That's what everyone keeps saying but I don't see it ever happening." He ran a hand through his hair again, something he tended to do when he was frustrated. And he was frustrated, with the whole situation. He wanted to be with Hermione more than anything but he knew it wouldn't happen. She wouldn't want him. He wasn't good enough.

"Perhaps you need to be more proactive Ron," Harry suggested. "Speaking as someone who was proactive, I can say: it can work out perfectly. Be the chaser and not the seeker you know? Not the one waiting, be the one making it happen."

"I don't see a point to that when the person I'd be 'chasing' after doesn't want me in the first place, Harry. Never did, never will." Ron was suddenly very vulnerable. Talking about this thing always made him that way. He hoped Hermione might feel something for him but deep down he couldn't believe she would... something was always telling him he wasn't good enough.

"Whatever." He said, rather gloomily, fiddling with a fork on the counter.

"You don't know she doesn't fancy you, this is just your nerves talking," Harry pointed out. "You've never asked. And you've never really made a move for her to say yes or no to."

"Because I know there's no bloody point." Ron said firmly, tossing the fork aside and letting out a sigh of relief when Dobby returned with Harry's snack and his vanilla cake.

"Thanks, Dobby." He said, grabbing a new fork and immediately digging in. "Doesn't matter anyhow." Ron said, looking at Harry. "We're going to the ball as friends."
