Masquerade Ball

WHO; The majority of the school.
WHEN; October 31, 1997
WHERE; The great hall and the gardens as well as the surrounding areas.
SUMMARY; Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch. Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King. This is Halloween. The Masquerade Ball.
RATING; R at the very most.
WARNINGS; The punch has been spiked with an Euphoria-inducing Elixir and a mild Babbling Beverage.
STATUS; In Progress.

The Great Hall was adored with the best that Charity Burbage could muster. Candles that would have usually kept the hall brightly lit were gone and replaced by pumpkins as well as a multitude of small white spheres of light that couldn’t be discerned as anything but stars from a distance. Despite the fact that the ceiling was overcast, nothing would stop the smile that Professor Burbage kept on her face. With a flick of her wand she placed the final touch on the decorations. She lowered a Jack-O-Lantern, on the center of the stage where the weird sisters would play, that was larger than her in her entirety.

With a quick shake to the Headmistress’ shoulders, she gave her yet another smile as she waved off Professor Hagrid who was attempting to bring more pumpkins into the room. They could go in the garden, after all.

“Would you kindly let the students in, Minerva?” the Headmistress shook her head disappointedly. She had been against this whole affair since the idea had popped into Charity’s head. But the simple fact that she was against the whole idea of it didn’t outweigh what her students had been through this past year. It would be for the best, they had earned this and more. Headmistress McGonagall gave a quick nod before heading towards the doors, a small breath, and then she opened them to find a group of masked students already gathered there, their eager faces reminding her why she had agreed to this in the first place.

With an honest smile, she raised her hands and projected her voice as Albus would have done if he were there, “Welcome, students, to the Masquerade Ball.”

Draco & Pansy & Theo and open.

You know...?

Having instantly recognised this voice— or at the very least, gotten a pretty good idea as to who this person may have been-- Pansy’s chin took on a sardonic side-ways tilt, and her mouth stubbornly pinched at either corner, suppressing the sarcastic counter that’d have no doubt come to mind immediately. As if under sufferance, the Slytherin girl took her merry time in turning around to face Theodore; and once she had, as if offended by his words, she lent him a cold look and a good minute and a half of unwelcoming silence. “Being that the single prerequisite of being here is that one is decorated with a mask, Theodore, I would say that the purpose of wearing this--“ she gestured self-righteous toward her mask with a pointed finger-- “is hardly defeated. Oh, pardon, I hardly mean to cause a fuss in calling your error, I suppose I could try changing the way I laugh to please you. I’ll mimic you, shall I?— Yes, then no one will know it’s me. Hold on a tick.”

Pansy cleared her throat behind one raised fist-- and then, exuberantly, she went about lowering her voice as much as she could and letting out a very ridiculous, very wry, “Huh-huh-huh-har-har-har,” as if to sharply mock Theodore’s own laughter. It could have been a very patronizing moment between either Slytherin, if Pansy’s awful, monotonous laugh had sounded anything like Theodore’s. Purposefully, it hadn’t.

“Better, then?” She paused as if to gage his gage his expression, seeming rather pleased with her efforts-- before letting out a far more genuine, far more high-pitched chuckle at it all. Shaking her head, and now stepping away from that subject to be able to take note of the boy’s clothing, Pansy glanced at the various garments and eventually tipped her chin downward in a half-approving nod. “Well, you don't look awful, Theodore-- dark palettes always go down well, I see. Wasn’t Daphne supposed to arrive with you?”

"You do realize that you've just embarrassed yourself more than once in less that two minutes?" Theo remarked after he had to bear watching Pansy's painful imitation of his laugh. He doesn't even laugh, for Merlin's sake. A small smile then followed Pansy's words. "If your purpose was to mock me, I'd have to say you've failed miserably. Safe to say, no, you've made things much worse. I do, however have something in mind to remedy things..." He took one of the long-stemmed red roses from his back and offered it to the woman in front of him with a curt, polite nod.

"Why, thank you." He said, straightening. "You don't look too horrendous yourself. I can't say the same about other people though..." he said his eyes following the little alarmingly purple pixie that passed him. "No, she wasn't. I was told that we shall meet here. And where's your man? Off to his other dates?" a small, teasing smile.

Pansy, embarrassing herself?

The girl’s arms crossed and her eyes gave a second, incredibly dramatic roll-- as if the very idea was preposterous. “Stop your exaggerating, Theodore, I was not mocking you all that loud,” came her dry response, articulated by a dainty, but very scornful, shrug of her shoulders. “And to begin with, it is hardly embarrassing to not hide one’s laugh in the first place. A person looks even more like a bloody idiot if they’re walking around in a mask, trying to hide the way they laugh for no reason. I clearly do not care if I am recognised.” Her impassionate rant having been concluded, the Slytherin let her chin take on a haughty angle as she happened to glance downward and spot Theodore’s rose. Neither overtly surprised or flattered, Pansy released another good-humoured laugh as she reached out and took the pretty gift from him.

“You are ridiculous-- been picking through the gardens again?” she said, mid-chuckle, but it wasn’t necessarily posed as an insult to her friend, despite the fact that her voice always had a way of pronouncing words sharper than she sometimes intended. But a moment later, Pansy gave a more simple-spoken, and more genuine, “Thank you.”

Ah, and then there was Theodore’s latter question regarding Draco’s whereabouts. Her lips stretched into a smirk; it downplayed the parts of her that may have been sincerely jolted by such a horrible idea. “His other dates. Aren’t you clever.” Using his rose, Pansy gestured outward, toward the greater expanse of the Great Hall. “Yes, he is out there somewhere-- probably an issue with Crabbe or Goyle, I expect, they still rely very much on his better judgement.”

"Me? Exaggerate?" The small smile on his features widened into an almost devilish grin. "How preposterous." He took a drink from a passing floating tray, but instead of drinking immediately he merely held it in one delicate hand. "But of course you want to be recognized. Why wouldn't you? Still, wearing masks, despite the fact that it's required for this affair, is for the purpose of concealing one's identity. I merely believe exploring such an opportunity would be... interesting. What do you think of me as a blond?"

"You might be right." Theodore mused, lifting his chin to calmly watch the room, his eyes scanning for any familiar face. "Perhaps on whether to take the eclairs or cream puffs first. Crabbe and Goyle, after all, have always been forced deal with the most mind-boggling obstacles. Draco's superior intelligence is constantly required..." He raised the glass to his lips but stopped just as the thin glass grazed his bottom lip, his eyes boring into Pansy's. "Or he could be out cavorting with some other woman other than yourself, probably somewhere very far from you. Like the Forbidden Forest..." he trailed off meaningfully- his tone was quite serious, though there was a slight hint of amusement in it. "The possibilities are endless, don't you think? It's quite fun to think of all of them. I've given you one theory. Care to share me another one of yours?"

-- “Is for the purpose of concealing one’s identity, should they desire to use it that way.” Speaking over-the-top of people is hardly the sort of thing Pansy’s mother taught her, but she couldn’t abuse an opportunity to correct Theodore. Her interjection was sudden, and was silenced as abruptly as it had come in the first place, and she listened to all else he had to say with an expression that did it’s very best to look extremely bored. “You, as a blond?” she answered when that pause between subjects had come, with a hoity-toity turn of her face, as if to imply, even without speaking, that the picture was altogether laughable she could barely look him at the face. “Crass. But I suppose some people are into that sort of thing these days-- won’t you take a look at the Weasleys once they arrive, I’m sure they will be a perfect example of the sort of admirers you would get with such an alteration.”

And then Theodore’s teases came. Sensing the direction his words would travel in, even when he was still describing Crabbe and Goyle’s lack of triumphs in life, Pansy’s eyes warningly swerved sideways and began to burn deep, dark holes into Theodore’s face. His theory having been articulated and her own eventually asked for, the Slytherin Prefect bore an icy glare Theodore’s way-- hardly disguising the short temper his jests had aroused-- for a short moment of quiet before she matched his tone with the dagger of her own.

“The Forbidden Forest-- you would think so, Theodore, I’m sure when you think of trysts it is the obvious location for you. A place for you and all the other beasts that live in there to mate quite happily-- no wonder Daphne decided not to arrive with you”-- Pansy harshly glanced down toward Theodore’s shoes, then looked upward again, a sneer barely masked behind her words even as she canted her face to the side and attempted a cynical smile-- “I’d rather be seen walking in alone, too.”

Yes, of course. Theodore had hit a nerve.

"Exactly. But I do not, however, see why one shouldn't take advantage of such a fact." Theodore's head cocked to the side as he continued to look at Pansy, his eyes sparkling in mild amusement. He didn't exactly believe such a thing. Pretending was only for those whose lives aren't interesting enough to live in. "And you think so? Oh, well." The other long-stemmed rose was balanced between long fingers in one hand, while delicate stem of a glass of punch was lightly clutched between long delicate fingers. "The Weasley's have always been a fascination in occasions such as this. They have always educated the masses on what NOT to do, and how NOT to dress. It's amazing. They accomplish such a goal every time. Ronald Weasley in our fourth year. That's all anyone has to say, really."

And Pansy's tone was replaced by one so cutting, that Theo almost believed his cheek was now left lashed and bleeding. "Oooh." Theodore teased, his lips pouting, not a shard of hurt from her insults or even remorse over his own remarks. People did often snap first before he did during banters like as this. He owed it all to the fact that almost nothing at all could hurt him; it was something that he was much used to though he still did not know how to deal with them every time. "I seem to have hit a nerve. I'm guessing it's that one throbbing on your forehead, just a flick away from bursting." he observed out loud with a slight narrowing of his eyes, and a grin in his lips. "Ah. But I believe it is not if we walked in together in the Ball or not that counts..." he took a step forward, his height towering Pansy's form, and plucked an imaginary dust from the mask placed over the other's features, a gesture that was ironically too sweet for their present situation. "It's how long my date would stay with me for the night..." He leaned in just a bit closer, his voice reduced to a softer, though still cutting tone. "And I happen to know for a fact that I am not in love with my date. You, on the other hand..." he trailed off meaningfully. "I don't believe I can say such a thing about you. Your jealousy is written all over your pretty little features, Pansy. Try to hide it..."

“Walking in together always counts,” Pansy said, with absolute certainty. “Anyone who says differently has never attended a societal ball.”

She would have verbosely agreed on Theodore’s thoughts on the Weasleys’ lack of style, as much an agreement inspired out of good taste as it was an agreement inspired out of bad prejudice, had she not been distracted by the other topics at hand. While the heeled shoes she wore added to her very average height, her housemate still seemed to tower over her, but Pansy was quite used to having to look up at people when they spoke-- height did not intimidate her. “Throbbing on my forehead? That’s disgusting,” she said, quite girlishly. It brought mental images of pimples, Pansy could have gagged. Getting a better grip on her temper as her mask was ‘cleaned’-- or, at least, deciding with Theodore that her open reactions were not serving her well-- eventually, Pansy could manage a rather casual, “How did you come up with all this rubbish, Theodore-- women’s intuition, I suppose? Don’t play all-knowing as to the reasons why I conduct myself, it is hardly jealousy to be insulted when a joke has been made at your date’s expense. Why would a date of mine, to any function, leave me for such nonsense?” It was clearly a rhetorical question; Pansy wouldn’t have wanted to know, in her right mind. “It’s offensive.”

The subject of love then brought a pause upon Pansy, although her face betrayed no sensitive outrage at it. She took her time, unhurriedly letting her face shake from side to side, and eventually she scoffed. “Love, yes, good one, Theodore-- not only is that none of your business, but it also has little to do with anything, one way or the other. Don’t be presumptuous. I think you may have been dipping into those romance novels a little too heavily. Perhaps something from the non-fiction section next time.” Skilfully enough, Pansy Parkinson didn’t divulge a thing.

"On the contrary, that saying is not true." Theo replied stubbornly, still in his too calm a tone. "I have had as much experience with Balls as you do. I only believe that such a thing only counts to people who take their social statuses too much into consideration. I, of course, as you may well be aware, am not that sort."

"Yes. Throbbed. You heard me right." He teased, cocking his head to the side. This was certainly an entertaining way to pass the time, and surely an effective way to distract himself from the claustrophobic surroundings. "Women's Intuition? Hardly. I suppose we can all blame it on my amazing imagination and natural skills in hitting a certain someone where it would hurt." A small frown creased his features at her next proclamation. "It was not my intention to offend. My goal was to merely get a reaction." He admitted, with a small shrug, crossing his arms loosely in front of him.

"You truly didn't need to explain, pudding." Theodore's predatory grin grew even wider at the other's reaction. Oh, he knew her all too well to be distracted by her words. She neither confirmed nor denied his allegations. Surely, she must know that he noticed this? "Your short pause told me what I needed to know. You of all people should know that I believe more on what a person's actions dictate than what comes out of their mouths. Lies are too easy to expel, I believe..."

Pansy barely batted an eyelash-- initially. A bare second had passed after Theodore’s final word, and the girl’s mouth was open, shooting out a fresh, steely reply. “It matters. You are not the general populace. Just because you don’t care, doesn’t mean that everyone else who attends those events doesn’t. On the contrary, they care very much. And besides, boys have the luxury of being able to be more cavalier in regards to their appearance in society; there is a shortage of well-bred, pureblood sons, and far too many daughters to go around. The Weasleys may be drab and live in poverty, but they are the only pureblood family we’re aware of who have as many sons as they have sickles in the bank.”

Knowing she was only being prodded at for amusement after his confession, something she quite often did to other people when she was feeling especially callous, the Prefect slowly-- and sincerely, seemingly-- appeared to tire of Theodore. She did not like being on the other end of such playful manipulations. Even as she spoke, her eyes began to drift out among the crowd of masked wanderers, wordlessly remarking on this dress and that robe, as if he were dull. “There is a big difference between hurt and annoyed, Theodore, don’t flatter your efforts that greatly. You were not that sharp.”

His final assertions squeezed a steady response out of her, eventually; Pansy’s hand raised and two of her fingers have a dismissive, tiny flick. Looking back toward her house-mate, she concluded: “Keep assuming whatever you like, my friend, but silence doesn’t confirm as much as you think-- some of the time. In regards to love, there's no horrible connotation in this situation, since Draco is fabulous. But as I said, things of this nature are none of your business”--

--“and on a completely unrelated note, if you call me pudding again, I’ll hex that grin right off your face.” For a threat, it was a rather lazy one. Pansy mustn’t have meant it entirely. Behind her mask, her eyebrow arrogantly arched. “The only men who refer to women as a sort of food are the have-nots or the pigs. I do hope you try to be neither.”
