Valentine's Day Gala!

Being the defending champs gave the members of the Caerphilly Catapults many obligations, like being the MC's of this rather lavish evening...or, rather, the boys had volunteered Carys to do all the talking as they stood and looked cute in their suits. It was a job that she didn't particularly mind, she'd been in the spotlight all her life, but she grew bored of introducing generous donors and the big-wigs of the league. Carys knew about all the politics that went on behind the scenes, so she put on a good face, but was definitely not shy about voicing her opinion on certain matters.

"Oh, absolutely," she said to the head of the refereeing committee, "But when you've got one ref on the offensive side, and the foul's committed on the far end of the defense's area....I'm just saying, we should probably be taking advantage of--oh, what's it called?" Carys winked at the man, and at the reporter listening in, "--magic?"

She laughed when he huffed and excused himself, and the reporter shook her hand for the great sound bit. Carys gave a little twirl (her dress had too many ruffles not to twirl), and leaned over the counter to order another drink. The sound of something like an amused snort made her turn her head, and she raised her eyebrows,

"Something funny?"

Much of the reason that Bertram hadn't been involved in the pregnancy (most of the reason, in fact) was because Rachel had made it very clear to him that she didn't want anything to do with him. He'd been concerned about that happening again (to a lesser extent, of course, since Bianca actually liked him) with Bianca, but he hadn't brought it up with her. It seemed silly and childish, wanting to make sure that the mother of your child could at least tolerate you.

He arched a brow in her direction when she spoke, wondering why the silence again. Surely she knew that he wasn't a complete idiot when it came to babies, even in the womb.

Ah, she was asking him about his job. "Well," he shrugged his shoulders, "It's -- a lot of flooing about places, but it's good. It's at least not boring." And not as bad as he had been expecting it to be, once he'd gotten the hang of things and been trained up.

"That's great!" she said with honest enthusiasm, leaning forward to get more detail, "I'm glad; I'm going crazy at the desk!"

Bianca knew she shouldn't hate being confined to her cubicle for the rest of her pregnancy, but a hitwizard shouldn't be told not to go out and fight! That only made them more obsessed with the idea of it! And now, with the Longbottoms having been attacked? Bianca wanted to get out there and help the aurors that were on the case like the rest of her squad! What good was she doing for Frank and Alice? Filing reports on all the 'tips' that were owled in? There was never any solid proof of anything! It was in her nature to get things done, whether it had been being the best dress at a Hogwarts formal or becoming one of the most dependent hitwizards on the squad. Bianca got things done.

Maybe that was why she'd pushed Bertram so easily. Bianca knew that the man did need some help to get out of a situation he'd been in all his life, but she probably could have been more patient about it. Mira liked to blame her hormones or the fact that all men were dumb and needed some sort of push, but Bianca liked to think that she had a bit more sense than the average girl.

They still had a lot of stubbornness to get past, however, so Bianca smiled and said somewhat neutrally, "I've missed hanging out with you."

"Are you sure that you're not just tired of hearing Mira drone on about her hot new Quidditch boyfriend?" Bertram noticed more than most people gave him credit for. Just because most of the information he picked up came out in the form of jokes didn't mean that he didn't want to be taken seriously occasionally.

He shrugged his shoulders again when she mentioned that she was going crazy at the desk. Honestly, he knew that she needed to be out in the action to be happiest ... but with everything that was still going on with Voldemort even months after his death, he slept a little better knowing that the chances of Bianca becoming actively involved in that were slim.

Bertram was pretty sure that she was genuine when she said that she missed him, though, and he couldn't help the slight smile that crossed his lips. "Well, you know, now that I have such a glamorous job checking the height of the grass on the Quidditch pitches across the country, I may not have time for dinners anymore..." Which they both knew was a load of crap. Hopefully Bianca caught the teasing tone in his voice and didn't think he was trying to push her away this time.

Bianca let out a loud laugh, shaking her head at Bertram. She really had missed this. The thing that had attracted her to Bertram in the first place was how similar their sense of humors were, and how easily they were able to hold a conversation without any sort of awkward pause. She'd been his friend before they'd begun to snog and all that, and she'd missed him. Oy, oy, oy, reminder! He still had some growing up to do.

Bianca didn't know if it made sense to keep holding out on Bertram, or at least not allow them to get back to where they'd been---and who knew? Maybe Bertram didn't want to jump back to a few months ago, either. Maybe they would just wait for it to happen naturally, when they both felt ready to commit again. Not that---it was more of a trust thing, than a commitment, for Bianca. She hadn't honestly been looking for another boyfriend, she was just hoping she could finally trust Bertram to make adult decisions on his own, without having her pecking at him about it.

And maybe he was hoping she'd relax and be okay with waiting, and taking some time for things to happen. As she was really beginning to realize, it took a long time to make a baby, so maybe she didn't have to be in the rush she'd felt so keen to oblige.

"Do you want to dance?" she asked, tilting her head slightly as if this were something of a difficult question. Bianca realized that she didn't know if he liked to be out on the dance floor, or not.

They did have similar senses of humor. Bertram wasn't necessarily going to jump right back into where they'd been before, but it would be nice to know that she wasn't going to go off and snog some dude from her office because she'd gotten sick of waiting for him to deal with the problems in his life. It wasn't as if he didn't trust her, he just didn't know if that was how things were supposed to go or if they'd even really broken anything off at all. Maybe it had just been some sort of ... break.

The question made him blink just a little. It had been ages since he'd danced properly, and he wasn't sure he remembered exactly how not to embarass himself, but it was something he could try. It had to get him some sort of bonus points in the re-relationship, right?

Right.

"Sure thing," he grinned, taking her hand to help lead her out toward the dance floor. He liked being the centre of attention most of the time, so it was no surprise that he liked dancing.

"But ... if I step on your feet a little, you can't hex me into oblivion."

Bianca winked, "Dunno if I can promise that."

She let him lead her to the dance floor though, glad for a slower tune because of her aching body (and feet! Oy, she'd completely forgotten how tight these shoes were and now her ankles were all swollen---). Bianca felt herself blush a little as her stomach bumped into Bertram. It was all very new and surreal to her, this being pregnant thing. No matter how many books she read, or how many questions she asked her mother or sister-in-law, she just couldn't understand some things. She couldn't wrap her mind around not being able to control the changes and everything else surrounding this little bump in the road.

But dancing soothed her. She wasn't one to go out on the weekends, but it was nice, and to be here with Bertram was even nicer. Maybe they were dumb for getting themselves pregnant and in this situation, but Bianca did know that he honestly cared about the baby, and she was now growing more sure about his feelings for her.

She looked up to smile at him when a searing pain struck across her stomach, her mouth dropping in shock. Bianca winced greatly and her nails dug into her shoulder. Okay, that one hurt much more than any of the previous pains had, and suddenly she was really, really scared.

"Something's wrong."

Dumb and pregnant was kind of Bertram's thing, to be honest...at least on his end of things. It wasn't like he didn't try to be careful this time, but apparently his super-fertile man-sperm were bound and determined to help him reproduce before he started heading over the hill. Her stomach bumping into him earned her a slight grin, but it quickly contorted into a frown when she winced and dug her nails into skin.

He slid quickly to her side, trying to start leading her toward some chairs so that she could sit down and at least have a rest. It was of course a concern that she was in pain, and the fact that she thought something wrong was worse. He hadn't been around Rachel for the actual pregnancy thing, so he wasn't sure whether this was normal -- it wasn't like he could figure out what she was thinking or how she was feeling, after all.

"Do we need to floo to Mungo's?" It wouldn't be a problem, they'd already done most of the major announcing for the evening and he didn't think leaving would make him miss anything important work-wise. Besides, the sooner that they left ... the less likely it was that he would somehow turn into a drunken buffoon.

"I don't--I--" Bianca tried to focus, but she was shaking too badly from the shock of the pain to respond. She was glad that Bertram had found her a seat because her legs were too wobbly to keep her up and she'd never felt this vulnerable in her life. She grew hot as her voice cracked and tears formed in her eyes and she avoided Bertram's gaze, "I don't know, I mean--"

It could be nothing, right? It could be what she'd read about, those fake contraction like things that could stop happening at about this time in the pregnancy. It could be one extra long stretch that her body reacted to, it could be--something terrible! It could be her baby screaming out for help! It could be the end of the world as she knew it and quite suddenly Bianca felt like her eyes were leaking, how quickly the tears poured out.

"What do you think?" she let out miserably, finally looking up at Bertram. Bianca gulped, wiping at her face, really having absolutely no idea what they should do. She didn't want to be one of those mums that ran to the healer after one sneeze, but her baby wasn't even here yet and he was scaring her half to death! She needed Bertram to make the call, she was too emotional to think straight about anything at the moment.

Once again, Bertram had very little experience with women being pregnant around him. He furrowed his brows again, glad that she was sitting down, and flagged a waiter over to get her a cool cloth. Once the waiter was off to do that, he turned to Bianca again.

Now would be a bad time to freak out, right? Because Bianca was probably all hopped up on baby hormones and didn't want to have to do things for herself, right? His mother had told him that if he was going to be around a girl when she was pregnant, he was going to have to start making some actual decisions for her.

"Uh," he let out eloquently, grabbing the wet cloth from the waiter hastily and pressing it to the back of Bianca's neck while he squatted awkwardly next to her, "I think that we can wait a minute or two, and if things don't improve any then we should go. I'm done all that I need to work-wise, anyawy. Worst case scenario, you have to wake me up after I fall asleep in a chair in the waiting room at St. Mungo's." That seemed ... logical, right?

Right?

Bianca liked plans. Her whole life had been planned, and when she finally was able to take control of it...she planned some more. This baby was something that had been completely unplanned and she hadn't been able to make any sort of solid solution to anything regarding it and her future and---Bertram was giving her a plan. Bianca watched him as he spoke, trying to calm her breathing and let the cool of the towel relax her slightly. Slightly.

She nodded, accepting this plan. This seemed like a plan. She had done all the reading, telling her about the stretches and the fake contractions. Bianca knew that many women experienced these things and would end up wasting a night or day out of work because of nothing. She knew all this, but it took Bertram's steady words to convince her that something might not actually be wrong with the baby.

"Okay," she said softly, nodding again. Bianca closed her eyes and took in a couple of deep breaths, hoping to calm down her heart. The pain had already subsided, it was more her nerves than anything at this moment. Maybe it was all a false alarm, it was starting to feel that way.

"Oh!" she let out as the baby kicked her very hard in the side. Bianca's eyes shot open and she blinked, looking down at Bertram with a funny expression. Okay, that was good. She smiled and grabbed Bertram's wrist, pushing his hand toward the target of their son's foot.

See, this was the part of things that he'd had to completely miss with Rachel. Sure, it had been because he was in school ... but most of the reason had been because his knocked-up not-girlfriend didn't want anything to do with him. He loved Amissa now, but the fact was -- well, the fact was that he hadn't been there for this part, and that sucked. Bertram blinked back at Bianca and then realized what his hand was doing there when something bumped against his hand quite firmly.

"Oi!" He arched his brow, somewhat quizzical. He was going to look like a bloody idiot if he didn't figure out what that was, but ... "I hope you don't mind him becoming a beater, because that is definitely what it's looking like at this point." At least Bianca seemed to be calming down, and she wasn't bleeding down her legs or anything. Things would be fine.

They had to be, because Bertram was really just starting to get the hang of doing things normally. If they had to skyrocket into a huge crisis now he didn't know if he'd be able to take it.
