For New Year's Eve!

Octavius thought, all things considered, this party had come together rather nicely. "All things considered" being the harrowing and oddly personal war Mira and he were currently battling out, and its various distractions. With the amount of sabotage his tricky personal assistant wreaked upon him (and, admittedly, some effects of his own retaliation, because he didn't have eight other siblings for nothing), he thought their end-of-the-year bash might never get off the ground. But the floating candles, the rather superb live, musical entertainment, and the food was proof of the fact that, in spite of the squabbling and havoc occuring at the Wizarding Wireless Network studios, they could still throw a rather excellent party.

He optimistically did not let it get to him that he had brought his sister as a date, and an offhand comment she'd made during one of their lunches had given him a spectacular idea for the grand finale of the night. Five minutes before midnight, the lamps would begin to dim to black as the ceiling turned into a reflection of the night sky. Then would begin the countdown, and at the stroke of midnight, ushering in the new year, a slew of firecrackers would be released over the crowd, all courtesy of some handy and pretty ingenious spellwork. Octavius was getting downright gleeful in anticipation of that.

Nor was he letting get to him the unfortunate fact that Mira and he, spitting claws and all, would be taking a portkey at the arse crack of dawn to Istanbul, for the European Cup beginning on the first (or, tomorrow). Select crew, and even some of the party-goers, were in the same boat, but Octavius had a feeling the sleeplessness would be worth it. Tonight would be a night to remember.

OOC refer here for kissing questions! Or ask me :]

Max's hand went to the back of his head, very much feeling embarrassed. How had that happened? Kissing Ann Shimpling. Not that there was anything wrong with kissing Ann Shimpling; Max had always found her to be quite pleasant, in the select moments of interaction he had seen or experienced with her, but the fact that he felt he had practically accosted her... that left something to be desired, didn't it? He didn't even know what had come over him, and the urge to do so was already fading from memory. What had it felt like? He couldn't remember now...

it was gone. And in its stead, was a creeping humble embarrassment. He much doubted she would even remember who he was. Max shook his head, thinking she had no need to apologize. And, he supposed, it was just a kiss--- a new year's kiss! There were worser things. But he would still feel awful.

"Guess we just really wanted a good start to the New Year," he joked, smiling slightly as he scratched the back of his head. And then, after a couple of awkward beats, "Ann, right?" even though Max knew perfectly well who he had just been holding on tightly to.

She smiled at his joke, averting her gaze because she didn't know what to do in this situation. It was so entirely out of Ann's knowledge base that she felt stunned and confused. It had been a very nice kiss, and even just the thought of it made her chest do these--weird, fluttery things. When he said her name, she looked up before nodding.

Ann remembered Max from school. It wasn't a totally solid memory, they were friendly but they didn't fall in the same social circles or anything. But she remembered him being a prefect and those small authority sort of things that occurred here and there in the Hufflepuff commons. But it had been at least a year or two since they'd seen each other, let alone spoken, and she was stuck standing there in front of him, trying to figure out what on Earth came over both of them and led to--yeah.

"Yes. How are things, Max?" she asked with a sheepish smile, feeling like the entire situation was a bit backwards. Shouldn't this small talk sort of thing happen before something further? And with much, much time between? She fiddled with her necklace, not sure what else to do because she still couldn't bring herself to holding his gaze for more than a moment or two.

He first let out an awkward laugh, and then another. Because it was, right? Kind of really awkward. But also, Max was starting to realize, a bit funny too, but only because of how uncomfortable they both obviously felt. He honestly couldn't say what had come over him, but in that moment a few ago, all he had known was that he had to kiss Ann Shimpling, and there had been nothing else about it.

And it would be left at that, because why divulge into the reasonings behind confusing actions at the very start of a new year? That should at least be saved for the day after.

Max dropped his hand from the back of his head to rest on the bar beside them. How were things? Oh they were just... relatively boring to the exciting past/present he had just experienced.

"Goo-- great, great, really great," he slurred, mouth once again forming to create an awkward smile. Max noticed that Ann seemed to be unable, or not want, to look at him for too long, but surprisingly it did not bother him. For, he too, was finding that it was difficult to hold a usual straight-on gaze. At least she remembered who he was too, he supposed. That helped a little.

"And you? How has... life after Hogwarts been treating you?"

She was about to respond when a waiter walked by with a tray of drinks. Given that things had already become far too strange, Ann decided that she didn't have to worry about alcohol induced embarrassment. She took a small sip of the champagne before catching his eyes and smiling shyly.

"It's been--good, I suppose?" She let everything mull over in her head. It felt like everything from the end of school until--until the war was such a blur. "I went into healing," she said finally, the smile on her face growing as she thought about the little things here and there that she had accomplished because of her job. "Pediatrics, actually. But past that...it's just life as usual. Nothing terribly extraordinary."

She brushed her free hand over her hair before glancing back at him. "What about you? Surely you've been up to more exciting things than I have." Ann saw him as such a sociable person in school, she thought for sure that he must have had all sorts of adventures since their leaving school.

Exciting? Barely. Well, to him his life was exciting, because what was more exciting than doing the things that you loved everyday? But, other people tended to disagree, he noticed, and therefore Max was forever bound to stating otherwise. Even more, he was unsure which side Ann would agree with, him or... society, he supposed.

"Healing? At Mungo's?" Max asked curiously, leaning more into the side of the bar. Healing was a tough occupation, wasn't it? Or at least, he had always thought so. Working with children might make it better, but also more stressful, because wasn't it so when dealing with other people's small family members?

"Well you must have at least one exciting birth story?" he asked hopefully. Mungo's was always sprouting out ridiculous tales, more of them true than not. Max shook his head, suddenly remembering to not leave her question about him unanswered.

"I haven't really been doing much either, I suppose..." he trailed off, glancing up as he thought. "Been working at the menagerie on Diagon for a while now. Loads of fun." Surprised at how comfortable he was currently feeling, despite feeling wildly uncomfortable mere moments ago, Max slowly began to ease down into the seat behind him.

Ann nodded and smiled when he asked about Mungo's. It wasn't the worst place to work, and she really enjoyed what she did. It was the little things that happened and the smiles she saw on her patients' faces usually made it worth it. Watching relief wash over parent faces usually made her job worthwhile as well. The good moments, overall, were enough to outweigh those hard moments that she didn't always like to think about.

"I don't usually see a lot of births, actually. Most of my patients are somewhere between 1 and Hogwarts, but every once in a while things get really busy and they need me to shift down," she explained to him with a small smile. "The last time they needed me, there was a bout of dragon pox starting up in the nursery and I ended up holding onto a little guy who'd caught it and was put in quarantine until things got better. He would fuss any time we tried to put lay him down, and I was the only one who could really get him to sleep when holding him, so I spent 24 hours holding onto the poor thing."

Her eyes lit up when he mentioned the menagerie. Her first real attempt at healing had been a small duckling when she was young. "That sounds like it would be exciting. Do you like it?" she asked curiously.
