New Year's Eve Masquerade! For Tuesday

Octavius believed hiring someone to organise an event for him meant they would actually organise an event for him. Unfortunately, that notion proved to be a false one when the organiser left him high and dry in the middle of the month, but Octavius persevered. With the help of himself, Mira, occasionally Lottie Sweeting, and an army of lackeys, the night of the masquerade had come together as beautifully as possible.

Lottie had, for once, actually done her job, and at either entrance of the grand foyer were attendants handing out beautifully crafted half-masks to party-goers, and collecting them as people left. The ballroom was majestic and shimmering, the music was softly thrumming, the drinks were pouring, and the mood was infectious. All in all, Octavius thought, it was a satisfactory night to end a rather satisfactory year. After the chaos and excitement that had chased him all throughout 1983, he was rather happy to have had a (comparably) quiet year.

"Can you make sure Miss Warbeck is ready to begin?" he murmured to an attendant nearby who then scurried off. The Wizarding Wireless Network had, after all, promised a wonderful surprise at midnight! Octavius needed to ensure everything went perfectly.

The flash of a nearby photographer made Octavius scowl, annoyed was he at even the few press witches and wizards who had paid handsomely to be at the charity event tonight. The publicity was good, no one could deny that, and the masks concealed everyone's identity at least marginally so there was no grievous intrusion on privacy, but that didn't mean Octavius enjoyed their presence.

He rolled up the sleeve of his dress robe to check his watch, then his eyes darted back to the stage. It was five minutes to midnight! What, for heaven's sake, was Celestina Warbeck taking so long to appear onto an already dressed stage? Shaking his head agitatedly, Octavius cut through a path through the brightly coloured bodies in the mingling crowd to check on his star performer.

OOC Read this for questions, or ask me! Fluid time, so feel free to thread before/after kisses. Again, the "compulsion" to find your kissing partner kicks in 5-10 minutes before midnight and could be anything from thinking you should walk and get some punch to being mystifyingly sexually attracted to the masked stranger at your side. HAVE FUN! GO WILD ♥ AND HAPPY NEW YEAR'S MY GORGEOUS GALS.

Charlotte's smile grew at the sound of her name. She spent the appropriate time during the summer of sixth year properly moping over the loss of her boyfriend, but she returned to school determined to not let it effect her any more. She had pushed Jake Bexley out of her mind right until this moment.

Standing here in front of him now reminded her just why it took a whole summer to do so though. Reaching up she carefully adjusted his mask. There, that helped. She did have a date after all, and Jake and his distracting face would keep her here far too long if she allowed it.

"Better now that all my hard work isn't being wasted. I work for the WWN now. Just like I said I would." She wasn't sure what to say to him. They hadn't spoken since they had broken up. She hadn't a clue what he had been up to these past few years.

"What about you?" she asked pulling at a loose thread on the cuff of his robes. "Enjoying the party? Bring a pretty date?"

He stiffened as her fingers grazed his skin, for various reasons. Being touched wasn't something he was used to, it was something he avoided. He couldn't control when his attacks occurred, but they were often sprung on him by being touched. Jake forced himself to keep his thoughts clear, but Charlotte fogged up his mind, she always had. He had not seen her in a very long time, and now that she was so close with that hair of hers, Jake was being flooded with memories from Hogwarts he hadn't realized he'd forgotten.

Jake swallowed roughly, moving his nose to wiggle the mask into place. He did not like the feeling of it against his face, but Charlotte wanted him to wear it and he could do that for her.

"It's a nice party. I was forced to come," he said, being honest. Not by Ollie, but by his brother, who was somewhere in the crowd as well. Jake blinked, looking down at his shoes before back at Charlotte. It was hard to talk to her. "I don't have a date."

Be nice, be nice to people, the voice of his healer rang in his head. Jake had a great desire to be nice to Charlotte because their breakup had been hard even though it had been for good reasons. At least, at the time he had believed they were good reasons.

"You look very nice. Did you plan this party?" he asked, recalling that she had mentioned the great effort put into the masks. Jake forced himself to ignore the tightness of the mask against his face.

"How convenient, nor do I," Lottie found herself saying though it made no sense. She had a date, somewhere in the crowd. He was sweet, and nice yet, at this moment she was struggling to remember his name. Preening at his compliment, Lottie held out to her arm to him. "You can be my date. It's nearly midnight and we can't be going into a new year dateless, now can we?"

She looked around at the party that she did not plan at all. She had offered, as she had planned spectacular parties back in school, but for what ever reason Octavius did not trust her with the task. And it nearly fell to pieces days before. Okay, so maybe she may have forgotten the one task that he did give her, but it was so mundane and she had managed to fix it before anyone found out. Besides, these masks were much nicer than the ones they had originally planned for.

She hummed turning back to Jake. "I think this is a sign for a good new year, don't you think?" Charlotte asked smiling up at Jake. "Running into you, just in time for midnight. Has to be good luck."

How could Charlotte Sweeting not have a date? That must have been a choice she made on her own, because Jake could not imagine any bloke passing up the opportunity to be escorted by her. Charlotte Sweeting was the prettiest girl on the planet. Charlotte Sweeting's smile could light up a room. Charlotte Sweeting's lips were absolutely amazing, and Jake desperately missed the feeling of them on his.

"I don't believe in luck," he murmured before ducking his head close to hers and kissing her soundly. Jake---could not recall the last time he had kissed someone, but the rush of feelings and thoughts swirling around his head about Charlotte Sweeting completely dissolved any trepidation. He hadn't been able to focus on anything in a long time, but Charlotte was proving she was important enough to change that.

His arm went around her waist to pull her close to him, memories of Hogwarts flashing in his mind, mixed in with the noise of the party, it was all...it was overwhelming, he felt his chest begin to constrict and his muscles tightened, but he couldn't stop kissing her. He had no real reason to. He would endure whatever pain his addled mind would put him through if he just got to keep kissing Charlotte Sweeting.

'I don't believe in luck'. Oh. Charlotte's smile didn't even have the chance to fall before Jake was kissing her. Her hand instinctively went up to his face, fingers curling into his hair behind his ears.

It was like she was at Hogwarts again and they had snuck off to a corner. Or that last kiss on the platform before they had parted ways after her sixth year. Why had she not fought harder for this? "Jake."

She pressed into him forgetting everything else. How had she ever forgotten about this? Jake Bexley had been such big part of her life and she just let him go. Her fingers twisted into the string of his mask desperate to see his face, regretting ever covering it in the first place. "Happy New Year, Jake." She said smiling up to him, hearing the clock chime midnight.

She tasted so...sweet. His thoughts blurred, remembering that he'd made that joke before, that there had been many plays on Charlotte's name and how good her lips tasted, her skin, it...the rush of emotions excited and pained him at the same time. They were thoughts he had not been able to recall and it was like they were bursting through a barricade, sending the debris clogging up his mind crashing into his skull. Holding onto Charlotte, pinning her to him was the closest embrace he'd had in such a long time. His arms felt ready to let her go, but his mind was refusing. He needed this.

His mask slipped off as her fingers fiddled with its tie. Jake sucked in a breath, completely aware now. Except---he couldn't fight back the urge to repel any touch, he didn't have the voice whispering in his ear that he must get closer to Charlotte. Jake recoiled, arms pulling away from Charlotte as if she was scalding hot. This was. Confusing! It did not---he couldn't...explain what...what had caused him to...

Panic, he was feeling panic. The rising feeling in his chest, the rapid breathing, that was panic. A panic attack. Jake put his hand to the side of his face, trying to figure out---anything! Kissing Charlotte had felt good, but he had not been in control of his thoughts. He had not---the feeling was all too familiar, the voice in his head not being his own and making him do--he hadn't done anything terrible like---last time.

"How'd you make me do that?" he demanded, putting his other hand to the side of his head. Headache, what a headache. Jake's eyes shut, trying to force away the pain. "What did you do?" His teeth clenched, stumbling back into the wall.

Charlotte froze at sudden lack of Jake in her arms. He was just kissing her and now he was looking at her like she had... as if she had done something wretched. She blinked back the tears that welled up in her eyes (out of anger or confusion, she wasn't sure) as he accused her of doing something. Of making him kiss her.

She pulled off her mask to tell him just what she thought of such an accusation, like she would force him to do anything he didn't want to, but the words died on her lips. It felt like someone had pour ice water over her as certain details she had some how forgotten came into focus quite clearly. Adian. She had come with Adian, and he was suppose to be her midnight kiss. How had she gotten sucked into a moment with an old flame she hadn't spoken to in years.

"What did I--What did you--" She sputtered trying to gather her thoughts, but when she finally looked back to Jake she couldn't even-- he looked like he was in pain. "I didn't do anything." Lottie said much softer now, reaching out tentatively. "Are you-- what's wrong? I didn't-- I don't know what happened, but I didn't do anything." She didn't why she found it so important that Jake know that she hadn't done anything. She should be leaving him and whatever his issue was to go find her date and apologize to him, but the idea that Jake thought she would didn't sit well with her. It made her skin crawl.

"What can I do?"
