Avis m'dear
Even though he would never, ever admit it out loud...well, no, no he would, but he'd probably only admit it in a fight, or something, to show that he really wasn't the bad guy or something---well, anyway, even though it might take some effort for him to admit, Tomas really did enjoy this husband act. You know, being nice to your wife. Doing nice, sweet things. Things that normal women often sighed that their husbands never did. Sure, they hadn't been married for even a month yet (two days! He was good with dates, unlike other husbands), but he was definitely trying to get as much husbandry stuff out there without making it overkill.

If that made sense. Because husbands usually didn't do stuff---so. Tomas didn't know, he was new at this!

At any rate, Avis wasn't the most normal of women, which was fine with Tomas, really, it was one of the main reasons he'd married her, so it was really give-or-take whether or not she was going to enjoy his birthday surprise. Which, yes, consisted of paperwork (because if all else failed, she'd get her bloody paperwork), and a plethora of other things he'd been busy collecting this past week. It took Avis being bed ridden in St. Mungo's to realize how much time he really did spend with her, and Tomas was currently on Moody's shit list (though, when wasn't he) because he refused to work with any of the other investigators.

Avis was his partner, thanks.

"Knock, knock!" Tomas' cheerful voice came from the door, but he didn't enter just yet. He grinned over at his wife, who looked terrible, but he didn't mind it too much.

Tomas Booth was her husband, true, but that didn't mean that she had to like the fact that he was always so -- infuriating -- when all she wanted was her bloody paperwork so that she could get out of St. Mungo's. There had to be a problem with the fact that he was there visiting her rather than the other way around, though, and she didn't want to think about why. She blinked at the voice coming from the door and resisted the urge to pick up the nearest tetra pack of water and chuck it at him for being so cheerful.

The urge was immediately quelled when she caught sight of his face, however. All right, so it was nice to see him (since they'd been apart rather more than she was used to as of late) and it looked like he was carrying something -- maybe it was her damn paperwork. Avis managed a small smile and arched her brow at him.

"If you say anything about my hair I am going to hex you into next week."

Oh, he didn't care about her hair. He just needed her attention on him before he flung the big bundle of balloons he'd had hidden behind him into the room. Of course, the quick disillisionment spell helped, and the spell was off the second he unfurled the balloons into the hospital room. Tomas reveled in their rainbow like majesty and came into the room under the curtain of balloon strings.

"Happy birthday!" he cheered quietly, sitting on the end of her bed, a brightly wrapped present sitting on his lap. Inside was a rather nicely put together set of all of Jane Goodall's publications---there weren't a lot, but Tomas had heard her going on about the woman with Erin, and had taken the idea and run with it. Also---he'd managed to find the films of the Chimp Woman (that's how Tomas had been referring to her when he couldn't remember her name at the library), and the projector was tightly packed inside of the box (with a bit of help of sizing charms).

And her paperwork was cushioning it all, so she had to at least look at the rest of the gifts before getting to it.

"Here." Tomas presented her with the box, and then smirked. "And your hair looks fine."

The fact that Tomas had actually listened to her ramblings about Jane Goodall was the important part, she'd decided. She didn't bother to hide her grin -- despite the fact the balloons were really just irritatingly bright and she would have preferred something else, she knew that he liked them and that, she supposed, was the important thing.

It was really very unfair that she was not going to be able to snog him until she was better, although she was sure that he was missing it more than she was. Avis shifted up so that she was sitting a little closer to him and then opened the box up, immensely pleased with the box of gifts -- and more pleased once she found the paperwork at the bottom of the box.

"And here I had been thinking you'd forgotten," She teased quietly, leaning in to at least kiss his cheek.

"Me? Never," he responded with a chirp---yes, okay, he was in a bloody good mood to see her, messy hair and all. It really wasn't fair, how much she honestly affected his day, and Tomas was a person who really got sucked into his emotions. So, when he was in a bad mood, everyone knew about it, but when it was good? Bouncing off the walls and sickeningly cheerful. And, well, just being this near to Avis after not getting to for all this time (ugh he hadn't slept well in days) was sending him to the moon.

He was a silent, mental sap, it seemed.

Tomas moved a bit closer, pressing his cheek to Avis' forehead; it was the way his mother had always tested their temperatures, and he frowned lightly as she felt ready to burn the skin off of his face. He pulled back and dropped his hand to her thigh, giving it a light, comforting squeeze, "Now, when are you going to stop this ploy to get all the handsome healers's attention and come home to your oh-so-humble auror? Who is just as if not more handsome than any healer in this building."

And since he was a silent, mental sap and what came out of his mouth was something about the healers here...

"Well, I don't know. Have you seen Healer Cervantes?" Avis quirked her brow at him and gave a soft laugh, absently leaning her shoulder against his while they sat. Yes, yes -- she'd missed him as well, and the only reason she'd been sleeping well was because they'd been giving her some sort of potion that knocked her out like a light. She smoothed her hand through his hair absently and then pulled out one of the books - the children's book - from the bag, setting it in his lap.

"Is this for you, or are you planning on us having kids behind my back?"

"I will have to hunt this Cervantes character down," he said quickly, his arm going around her waist in an exaggeratedly possessive manner, "And, I think it'd be rather difficult to have kids without you."

Tomas' nose scrunched in a good mannered expression at the topic of children. A rather strange place to be discussing this for the first time (were they actually discussing it, or was she just teasing?), but he didn't mind it. He had a feeling that all aurors wanted to rush the family thing--it was morbid to think about, but they literally did put their life on the line every day, and it just became the mentality to think that, hey, if I wait too long...

...eh. No, now really wasn't the time for a serious baby talk, and he flipped open the pages.

"Though, I mean. A good start to the collection, hm?"

"That's true," she admitted with a small smile, shaking her head. "I mean, I could just as easily have kids without you, but my fine egg-specimens..." She leaned in and kissed his cheek. "Yes, I suppose it will be a good start to the collection. Now all we need to do is figure out a way to fund her research."

That she was being serious about. Sure, she'd been relatively serious about children ... but she didn't want to bring it up just now. She wasn't about to just rush something because their job dictated that they should. Then they'd end up like so many of the couples that ended up divorced over ... strain or whatever it was that the others blamed things on.

See, they were good at this whole---serious conversation thing. Tomas could tell that Avis was taking it lightly, and that meant it wasn't set in stone or anything crazy like that, so. That was good. He liked the idea of children, Tomas loved playing with Annabelle at Greer's house, but he and Avis hadn't even been married a month, they definitely had time.

Which...was totally contradicting his thoughts about how an auror needs to fast forward through things, but right now, he was quite content on focusing on Avis and getting her out of this hospital.

"So---I've calculated the time it takes to get from this ward to the main magical bugs desk," he began, pulling out of his pocket a map of St. Mungo's. It flashed from different floors to make it more compact and easy to read. He wouldn't really plan an escape for Avis, as in--he wouldn't let her escape until she was all better, but they could have some fun,

"And you've got approximately three point seven seconds to get to the lift, and then you've got to duck under the potions cart that's passing...'

"That is really not far, Tomas Booth. Taunting me with the exits that I could have if only getting up from the bed didn't make me nauseous." Avis wasn't terribly good at this 'whiny pouting' routine that Erin seemed to have perfected at some point in her life, but at least she could try it on him. She huffed quietly and crossed her arms over her chest, arching her brow at him.

"If I really wanted to get out, I'm sure I could just oblivate whoever comes to the room next..." She paused, arching a brow at him, "or do you think they'd frown upon that sort of thing?" She'd have to say that yes, they probably would. Avis tapped her finger into the middle of the map. "See, it would be perfectly easy to apparate from there. It's where several protective fields conjoin, they likely wouldn't have it reinforced." Because apparating when you were ill was a fabulous idea.

No, really.
