open to Archemedes
Before, Jordy had never been so nervous about being around Professor Monroe. Of course, he'd had a crush - but Archemedes hadn't know about it. Now he knew about it. That put an entirely new level of nervousness into the boy's system, and he was more than sure that he'd get word from Archemedes that they couldn't study during spring break. But word never came, and instead Jordy kept his dinner date promise the next day, despite the fact that he was nervous. This time, however, he brought some papers he'd been working on - working together some defensive spells on his own for his final project for Archemedes class. He figured it would give them something relevant to speak of during dinner, and Archemdes would be keeping his promise of helping him study.

As they sat down, this time in the dining hall of the school, Jordy offered a warm smile as he slid the paper over to Archemedes. He was anxious to see what the man thought of his hard work. Two spells were nearly perfect. Aquatis was meant to encase an oppenent with water, and Entundo was to confuse them with a hallucination from their past. The one that needed the most work was Chimura, which was meant to cause a delirious fever - but something that physical, inside of the body, was hard for Jordy to get a grasp on.

"Thank you again for this," he said sincerely as he lifted his burger up to take a bite of it. It was still hot, like it was fresh from the grill though it had been sitting out for at least thirty minutes, and Jordy had to smile. He loved magic.

Archemedes had woken up with quite a hangover that morning. He was not as young as he used to be and when he'd gone down to get a potion from the nurse, she'd given him a disparaging look before handing over the goods. Archemedes couldn't care less what the stodgy old woman thought about him and he took the cure with gusto.

He'd worried about the study date--no, not a date, an appointment--with Jordy all day. The last thing he wanted to do was skip it, but he'd already been nervous because of the practice part. Now that he knew Jordy had a crush on him, he was even more afraid of what would happen. The practical exam was full of triggery situations for Archemedes, but he needed to test the kids in a real way.

Seeing Jordy was difficult because immediately he felt his heart pick up. How silly. This was a student. But his smile nearly rendered him speechless. Looking down at the paper, he started to read over it. After a moment, he let out a small laugh. "You're really very brilliant at this stuff," he had to say. The spells were very well constructed. "Chimura might be helped by focusing on one organ in the body. While it would limit it to humanoid creatures, it would strengthen it a great deal."

Jordy didn't realize just how unique he was. Usually when a student excelled at the physical side of magic, they didn't always do so well with things such as potion making or spell crafting, yet somehow Jordy managed rather well. Maybe it was because he worked so hard. Herbology was by far his weakest subject of study, he just found it so dull - and thus he wasn't always so great at potions, either. But spell crafting? Well, that was another story entirely.

"Thank you," he said with a smile that shone with genuine appreciation. Hearing Archemedes compliment him was like nothing else and it set Jordy on a natural high. he was always working hard to impress the man, and he always chalked it up to schooling - but now he knew that it was definitely in part of his crush him. "That's actually - why didn't I thin of that?" he laughed a bit, his cheeks going pink at the mention of focusing on one organ in the body. "You're brilliant."

They were having meatloaf today and Archemedes wrinkled his nose at it. With a twist of his wand, he transformed it into pot pie. It would still taste like meatloaf, but at least it would look more appealing.

Glancing back at Jordy, he noticed that his cheeks were pink and he tilted his head, wondering why. Maybe he was just blushing over the fact that Arch had complimented him. Then he went back over his conversation and frowned a little. "Well--organ--yes--" he cleared his throat. "You know what I mean. Internal." Maybe before he would have laughed about such a verbal twist, but in the current situation it made him even more anxious. Now he was thinking about organs.

Jordy was glad that he'd chosen the hamburger over the meatloaf. Two choices, but the hamburger was always the better one in his opinion. He chewed, then swallowed before he popped a french fry into his mouth and watched Archemedes face. At the way he stuttered around the word organ, Jordy arched a brow with a faint smile.

"So - that man I passed on the way out last night, who's he? A friend or a family member? He seemed pretty serious," he said, thinking that getting Archemedes to talk about something else might help to ease the man's discomfort. "Does he smile? He didn't look like the type," he grinned.

He glanced at Jordy's hamburger somewhat longingly. He was never one for the burger and fries option, liking a more traditional meal, but when the kitchen surprised him with meatloaf--ugh.

"Who?" As if he'd been accused of having some torrid affair. Then he realized who Jordy meant and he laughed. "Oh, Larit. An old friend. An auror. And no, he can't afford smiling with such a serious job. You'd better be careful going into the auror industry. It requires you to be a stick in the mud all the time. I only recently learned how to joke."

"Will you be trying out those spells this evening? I've arranged for a charmed room. One where we can't hurt each other, but all the spells will have their effects. I'd like you to go up against me as a dark wizard." For Jordy, going up against dark creatures would just be too easy.

"I don't believe that for a second, your smile is much too genuine," Jordy said honestly in between bites before he reached for his pineapple flavored soda to have a sip. "I think I'll try out Aquatis and Entundo, but I won't try Chimura until I work on it some more and perfect it a bit," he added with a confident nod. "I'm a little bit nervous, I hope I do all right."

He had no idea that Archemedes was probably nervous and thinking the exact same thing. Jordy could be pretty perceptive about some things, but others he could be very oblivious towards and he wasn't sensing Arch's apprehension in the least. Then again, maybe the man was very good at hiding it when he wanted to.

Sometimes it was as if Archemedes had never been through a bad experience in his life. He had all the confidence in the world. He could fool himself into believing that he had his shit together, and then suddenly something would set him off and he'd be a mess. It was the unexpected nature of his episodes that was so frustrating. Sure, he could anticipate situations that would trigger him--like the upcoming practice, for example--but he could never be fully certain of how things would affect him.

"You'll do quite all right, I'm certain. I do believe we'll need a safe word. Something we can call out to stop the exam." He knew full well what other activities used a 'safe word,' but he straightened his posture and made no allusions to such activities. "Marmalade, I believe, will work just fine."

"Like Lady Marmalade the song?" Jordy asked as he arched a brow with a smile. He quickly realized that he was being inappropriate, however, and he bit the smile back and cleared his throat. "Sorry - all right, marmalade it is," he said with a nod of his head. "Good idea, I hadn't even thought of the idea of a safe word."

When he finished his food, he wiped his hands and mouth with his napkin and then he sat up to look over at Archemedes with a half smile. It was shy now because he was nervous over the joke he'd started to make over the safe word. And, well, he was nervous about the practice exam.

"Don't go easy on me, all right?" he asked. "I want to be good. Better than good."

Frowning deeply at the joke, Archemedes conjured a bit of Larit's dire expression. Jordy was a fantastic mix of shy and bold; it reminded Archemedes of himself when he was that age. That thought did strange things to him, jealousy and want sprang up in the pit of his stomach and he did his best to quell both.

"I certainly won't go easy on you." Archemedes worried that he would lose himself in the moment and forget that Jordy was not the enemy. It was why he had made certain that the charms on the practice room were solid and up to date. He could not have his memories getting the better of him and he only hoped that the word 'marmalade' would bring him out of anything bad.

When they were both ready, he stood up and brushed off his robes. The dirty dishes disappeared from the table and Archemedes took the last sip of his iced tea before turning and leading the way to the practice room.

Jordy gave a nod at Archemedes words. He trusted that Arch wouldn't go easy on him at all, and that was exactly what he wanted. He cleared his throat after he finished his drink up before he got to his feet to follow Archemedes out of the dining hall.

"So, you and Larit, you use to work together? Were you like - you know, partners?" he asked, trying to sound nonchalant. "I mean, I know some Aurors have partners. Did you guys work as a pair at all or were you both just solo?"

There, that sounded a bit better though it wasn't really what Jordy wanted to know at all. He wanted to know if they'd dated or slept together, but he knew that a question along those lines was completely inappropriate.

"There were times that we worked together, yes. On certain cases that required a partner he was always my first choice." And he assumed that he'd always been Larit's first choice as well. "One usually takes a partner or a squad when dealing with dark wizards. The human element makes it far more dangerous and just better to have someone to watch your back."

He did not offer any information as to their personal involvement, though it had always been just friends. Larit was his family moreso than his own family. Archemedes had plenty of meaningless second cousins, but no one of his blood relatives meant what Larit meant to him. "When you do go into auror training, you should keep your eyes peeled for people you trust. They'll be important to you in your career."

They arrived in the room and when they entered it, it changed its appearance to that of a forest. It looked larger than it was, but the boundaries of the room were marked with a fog. Anything beyond that and you'd be running into a wall. "I suppose I could have made it look like a city, but a forest will do, don't you think?" A city would have felt too close to the situation in which he'd been captured.

"Oh," Jordy said with a bit of a nod.

He hadn't gotten the answer he'd been seeking, but he was sure he had in a way. He had a feeling that Larit and Arch were just friends, and that made his heart leap with a hope that he knew shouldn't have been there at all.

"I will do that. I think Ares Avel wants to be an Auror, but I wouldn't trust him with a toad," he said before he realized how that must have sounded and he bit on his lower lip. "He's just not very nice," he added quietly as his eyes darted to the sudden change of scenery once they'd entered it. "Oh - yes, I like the fog," Jordy said with a soft smile. He was excited and it showed.

At the mention of Ares, Archemedes frowned a little and nodded. "The Avel family isn't exactly full of upstanding citizens of the wizarding world." They ranged from petty criminals to big time mayhem causers. From his own experience, the Avel twins didn't really break that stereotype. He was glad that Jordy could see that though. He wouldn't have been able to hide his disappointment if Jordy actually trusted either one of those boys.

The boy's excitement was cute and infectious. Archemedes found himself a bit more relaxed, pretending that this was just going to be fun rather than terrifying. It was good to get this practice in for himself, not just Jordy. "I'll give you a headstart," he said with a slight smile. "There's a magically guarded civilian to be saved. Actually a rabbit, but let's just pretend."

"Oh - can we name him before I go in to find him?" Jordy asked as he turned to look at Archemedes with bright eyes full of anticipation. "I know it probably sounds silly, but it could be fun. Maybe his name could be Barney Buttersworth, and he's the heir to a magical syrup business," he joked with a half grin. "Or B-Rabbit, a magical rapper who raps spells from across the tracks in South Detroit."

Archemedes had been busy settling into his I'm-a-serious-dark-wizard facade when he burst out laughing at the idea of a rapping bunny. It was in that moment that he fully understood that it would be totally pointless to try and not become utterly infatuated with this kid. He cleared his throat. "He's a carrot farmer hoping to break into the Easter egg market, obviously. And by hoping I mean hopping. His name is Raymond Cadbury."

He withdrew his wand and aimed it at Jordy quite seriously. Archemedes never aimed his wand at someone unless he meant it. "Head start is up." His mouth twisted with an almost cruel smile as he flung a jelly-legs jinx Jordy's way.

"I like that," Jordy said with a half smile, but it quickly faded when Archemedes leveled his wand at him and warned him that the head start was over.

"Protego!" he said as he quickly lifted his wand to deflect the spell. He flung the Impediment jinx Arch's way, hoping to slow the man down so that he could get a head start into the protection of the forest and find the rabbit.

"Fragosus," he whispered, aiming his wand at Jordy's legs. It was meant to trip him, make his legs tangle together awkwardly. These jinxes back and forth were a warm-up for both of them. Jordy's had tightened Archemedes' muscles, made him move slower so it was difficult to stay on the boy's tail.

Fortunately, the bunny was very well hidden and protected. It would take a very clever student to find him, though Archemedes had every faith in Jordy. He needed to remember that this wasn't about winning, this was about preparing Jordy for the future. He would keep that in mind as best he could.

Jordy toppled forward with a grunt, but he was quick to roll over and he leveled his wand in Archemedes' direction with confidence.

"Flipendo," he said, hoping to knock Archemedes back.

Instead of waiting to see if he'd landed his attack, he got to his feet and darted off into the trees. It was foggy, and he dipped behind a tree for cover.

"Deprimo," he whispered, creating a wind to clear a path for him, and once he walked through it the fog covered the path back up so that Archemedes wouldn't know which way he'd gone.

All of Jordy's spells were well formed and perfectly focused. Archemedes found himself on his back, staring up at the trees towering over him with a bit of a laugh stuck in his throat.

Scrambling to his feet, he disappeared into the fog, trying to follow where he thought he saw Jordy go. He used his hearing more than his sight and the fog helped him concentrate on the sounds of the forest. To his left, he heard the rustle of footsteps and he aimed a binding spell that way, intent on trapping whatever was there.

"Cave Inimicum," Jordy said softly, that way he could be warned of Archemedes' approach if he grew near, and that's when he realized that he was a little too late. He found himself a bit lost, as if he couldn't get out of a certain area, and when he saw Arch coming at him through the fog he held his breath before he leveled his wand at him, "Depulso!" he shouted, hoping to send Archemedes back to the beginning of the forest so that the man would have to find him all over again, thus giving Jordy a head start.

It worked, but not before Archemedes could send out a wicked little charm that amplified Jordy's nerves. It festered in his brain for a little while before starting to multiply itself like a virus. The charm pulsed through him, nestling itself into the farthest reaches of his consciousness, turning the smallest sounds into his worst nightmares. It was a charm he'd learned from his attackers, understood its mechanics well because it had been used on him so many times. Ultimately, it was not right to use it on Jordy at such a benign time in his training and as soon as the words left Archemedes' mouth, he regretted them and wanted them back.

But now he was all the way back at the beginning and he didn't have a chance to reverse the spell. He began the trek again, this time pushed on by the fact that he needed to get back to Jordy in case the boy couldn't handle what his mind was doing to him now.

The charm hit him, and at first Jordy didn't even realize. He kept making his way through the forest, searching for the bunny. But with each step, each breath, he started to grow more and more anxious. He knew that Archemedes had thrown some sort of charm at him and his logical thinking told him that's what this was. That logical part was quickly fading into the background, and eventually he cast a bedazzling hex on himself to hide himself completely. He figured that would make him feel more secure, but it didn't. He was still anxious, and soon he was terrified of everything. He wanted the feeling to go away and somewhere through his muddled thoughts, he tried to think of what to do to counteract what Arch had done but the fear was growing much too strong for him to figure it out. Eventually he ended up huddled on the ground and sobbing uncontrollably, and that was probably a good thing since it would allow Arch to find him despite the cloaking hex he'd put on himself.

Many times during his searching, Archemedes considered calling the whole thing off and yelling 'marmalade.' But Jordy wasn't in any physical danger and deep down, Arch knew that he could handle this. That didn't mean he wasn't regretting the fact that he was the one to have used the spell on him, causing him so much fear.

Of course, Archemedes heard him before he saw him. Sharp eyes scanned the tree line as his wand cleared the fog ahead. The slightest shimmer in the background told him where Jordy was and he ran to him, not playing the role of dark wizard anymore, but of concerned teacher. "Jordy. Jordy, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have--I didn't even teach you how to defend against this." Kneeling down next to him, he released the spell and whispered the safe word so that the forest dropped away from around them and they were simply in a stark room together.

There had been a faint moment, a little glimmer, when Jordy remembered the fact that there was a safe word but then he started to worry that the safe word might not even be a safe word at all. What if it was something worse, something terrible? No, no - he couldn't use the safe word. Something even more bad would happen.

Suddenly everything fell away, though, and Archemedes was kneeling down beside him. He didn't hear the apology at all, he'd been too wrapped up in his nerves and fear to realize Arch was even close until the charm had been reversed. He was still shaking, still visibly upset, and he looked at Arch with confused and tearful eyes.

"What just happened?" he asked, trembling.

"I made a mistake is what happened," Archemedes said with a dire expression on his face. "I got caught up in the scenario and used a spell that was too much." Without thinking, he brushed Jordy's blonde hair out of his face and then slipped his thumb against his cheek to get rid of some of his tears.

The trembling just made him scoot closer to the other, putting an arm around him. "But it's gone now. We can practice some more tomorrow if you want. I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to."
