To Hale
Something was up with Apollo. Ares could feel it. He wasn't sure what to do or say about it, though. He wasn't even sure how to react, really. He felt like maybe Apollo was keeping something from him, and he'd never felt that way before. It was unsettling, and he didn't like it. He wondered if it had something to do with Link. The way that Apollo hadn't wanted to deface the kid... It bothered Ares. Something was going on, and he was going to have to find out what.

For now, though, he had to focus on his project for... What class was it? He couldn't even remember. He'd gotten a hold of some herb from Professor Mullen's lab and he'd mixed it with some weed to smoke. Whatever he'd concocted, it was amazing, and he was high as a kite as he laid in the grass in the court yeard and waited for Hale to come along. He was all sprawled out, his books laying next to him in a neat stack as he stared up at the sky. He was out of it, completely lost at the moment, and it was obvious. When Hale came into view, the older boy leaning over him, Ares arched a brow.

"You look like an elf," he said with a slow smile. "A pretty one."

When Hale touched the tip of his finger against Ares' mouth, Ares parted his lips just enough to let the tip of his tongue touch Hale's before he fell back onto the grass and stretched out with a heavy sigh.

"Who says it can't be both?" he asked as he looked up at Hale. "It's gotta be a little playful. At least sometimes."

Hale wanted to roll his eyes and bat Ares' tongue away, but he found himself mesmerized by the sight and the feel. This was not where he'd expected to be right now. Of course, he'd been anticipating a struggle to get the assignment done, but he didn't think Ares would suggest making out like he meant it.

"It's dire, if anything. You kiss someone and they have a little bit of you forever. My whole family--from as far back as anyone can remember--only ever kissed one person. One. And that's the person they stayed with forever." Maybe it was a foolish superstition, but Hale believe it.

That was intriguing to Ares and for a moment he just stared back at Hale. He wondered if the older boy had ever kissed anyone, or was he waiting for some magical moment and to be with one person?

"What about you?" he asked, "Have you never been kissed then? Because then I highly suggest you let it be me - or else you might get stuck with someone who is awful at it and you'll be scarred for life and probably not kiss anyone for eighteen more years."

Hale looked surprised. "No, of course I haven't. If I had, I'd be with someone forever right now, wouldn't I." He shook his head with exasperation. Ares just wasn't getting it and he sucked in a breath. "And what if you're awful at it? I'm not sure I want to spend the rest of my life wranglin' you. You're wiley."

"I'm definitely not awful at it," Ares said with a smile as he wiggled his toes and then yawned, his eyes drifting closed. "But I guess you'll never, ever know. I hope you don't get stuck with a bad kisser. That'd just be terrible. Very sad. You'd never really know what you were missing out on, thoug."

For a moment, Hale looked despondent over that. To speak in terms of forever was one thing--but 'never' hurt. He'd never thought of it that way, that believing in a superstition that gave you a forever also condemned you to a lot of nevers. He licked his lips as if trying to imagine what Ares felt like and then he refocused on the project.

"How do you propose we tackle the unicorn project? You said it was going to be easy. That must mean you've got some sort of plan."

"Lets just go get to it, I can get the lock of hair from it's mane," Ares said as he pushed himself up and dusted himsef off. "Just don't laugh at my way of doing it," he added with a half smile.

He sang. He had a very lovely voice, but no one knew about it aside from Apollo of course. Ares loved to play the guitar and sing but he only did it when he was alone or with his brother. Apparently he was going to do it in front of Hale too, though.

He wondered if he'd offended Ares, but he couldn't dwell on it because the moment had passed and he couldn't get it back. Feeling relieved that they were going to get down to business, he tugged the assigned portkey out of his pocket and held it out for Ares to touch.

When they were sucked through to the forest well outside of the city and far away from the school, Hale felt instantly more at home. His whole body eased when he saw his surroundings. He was quiet and just listened for a few moments, getting his bearings.

One thing about the Avels was that they didn't easily feel offended. Reaching out, Ares touched the portkey and when he found himself in the forest he shed his shoes and socks as well as his cardigan. The grass was soft and cool, and he smiled over at Hale before he started to walk.

"We should take our time finding the unicorn, it's nice out here," he called softly over his shoulder.

"Please tell me that your plan has nothing to do with being a pureblood--because I can tell you right now that that's an old wives' tale. Purebloods can't lure unicorns any better than those with mixed blood." There, he was needling a point that they could disagree on and maybe that would push Ares back onto territory where Hale could disregard him as a jerk.

But the fact that the boy had taken off his shoes made Hale smile and he nodded a little. "Yeah, I guess we could take a little time. This almost feels like home."

"No, my plan has nothing to do with me being a pureblood," Ares said with a faint laugh. "I'm not that stupid - I know that's all superstision. But I also know that you don't always need a virgin maid, either," he added as they came upon a stream and he dipped his toe into the water. "What's your plan? Do you have one?" he asked, turning around to face Hale with a raised brow.

Hale straightened up, sensing the challenge. "I was planning to think pure thoughts and call out that I was a virgin." His voice was sardonic and he put his hands on his hips.

"Actually," he continued as he pulled out a small bottle, I made some Clements' family moonshine and I was going to bait it. No magical creature can resist this stuff." It was possible that he was putting too much faith in his family recipe, but it had worked for all of the animals the Clements had ever had to catch.

Ares' grey colored eyes flickered from Hale's face to focus on the little vile, and he just smiled a little bit before he rolled up his jeans a bit and then started to cross the stream. It wasn't very deep at all, and when he was on the other side he pulled out his wand.

"Avis," he said quietly, causing a flock of birds to fly out from the tip of his wand and into the air. He looked up and watched them. "Follow them, they'll find the unicorn," he said as he started off through the woods in the direction the birds had gone.

Hale couldn't tell if he should be annoyed by the smile or not. He was defensive about what people thought about his old family ways. They were weird and superstitious and backwoods, but Hale knew their remedies worked. He wasn't sure, however, that unicorns would be interested in moonshine.

The deftly made spell was impressive. Many people who used that spell got weak birds, or only a few. Ares' were bright and vibrantly full of life as they burst forth. Hale followed, sticking close to Ares for fear of losing him as the woods got more and more dense.

Ares had given up on trying to win Hale's affection, at least for now. Sure, he had a strange crush on the older boy that he didn't quite understand - but that didn't mean he was going to keep throwing himself at someone who didn't at all seem interested.

"Have you seen a unicorn before?" he asked Hale quietly as they slipped through the forest. The birds had landed in some trees up ahead, and Ares started in that direction.

He shook his head, taking a cue from Ares to be quiet. He'd never seen one and his heart was racing. When the birds landed, Hale reached out to grab Ares' arm to steady himself because as level headed as he was being about this before, he was going crazy with anticipation now.

"Are we going with your plan then? You haven't told me anything about it. We can't kill it, you realize," he added.

"We're not going to kill it, of course we're not going to kill it - I like animals," Ares said softly as he held up a hand to signal Hale to be quiet as they came closer to a clearing where the unicorn was. "We'll go with my plan," he added, his voice barely above a whisper. "There it is - all right, what we're going to do is sit here just inside of the clearing - be very quiet. Then I'll coax it over to us."

Before Hale could protest, Ares slipped into the edge of the clearing and had himself a seat, and only when Hale was sitting beside him did he wet his lips and start to hum. It was just a hum at first, but then he started to sing. It was an hold fairy's hymn, something his mother use to sing to himself and Apollo when they were much younger. It didn't take long for the unicorn to start to come over to them, taking it's time as it's tail swished a little bit.

It was the last thing that Hale was expecting. As soon as Ares really started to sing, he felt very silly for the vial of alcohol. Clutching it in his pocket, he could hardly breathe because the moment had suddenly turned so surreal. There was an actual live unicorn in front of them and stranger still, this hard-edged boy was singing something beautifully.

He closed his eyes to try and focus on pure thoughts. He needed his mind to be clear so that the creature wouldn't shy away from them. Ares' mind was busy with the music and so Hale was the one who needed to keep his own mind a bright and welcoming place to the animal. It was hard to concentrate though because Ares was painfully distracting at the moment. But he didn't want to miss a moment, so he opened his eyes and there the unicorn was, very close, close enough to reach out and touch.

Hale had to gasp a little and he froze, not knowing what to do.

Ares was all smiles. The first time he and Apollo had managed this, it had been such a surprise that he'd gotten overzealous and tried to touch the unicorn right away and he'd spooked the creature. The second time went much smoother, and this was the third time. He waited a moment, then shifted up onto his knees and he reached out to gently run his fingers against the side of the unicorn's nose. Eventually he ended up stroking it's mane and then he braided a piece of it before he reached into his pocket for his pocket knife. He cut the braid with care and once the knife was back in his pocket he kissed the top of the unicorn's head and gave it a pat on the side of it's neck.

"Do you want to pet it?" he asked Hale quietly as he looked over at him.

Hale was quite good with animals, but for some reason, this one was sending him over the edge with nerves. He'd dealt with some of the more ferocious creatures that populated the forests of his home and had never felt like this before. When he stood up slowly, he found that his legs hardly worked.

Seeing Ares with the animal was--Hale hardly knew how to describe it, even in his own mind. But he managed to walk closer to the two of them and reach out a hand. It was kind of like the holy grail of magical creatures and when his fingers connected with the silvery mane, he had to hold his breath. He felt a little stupid for reacting like this, especially since he'd started out this whole endeavor thinking that Ares was going to be the idiot about this.

When Hale got close, Ares backed off to give the other boy some room. He could see how nervous the other was and he found it endearing. Hale seemed to know everything and he had this aloof confidence about him that Ares was sure sometimes Hale wasn't even aware of. Smiling, he watched the two.

"I know some try to take the horns for black market magic, I couldn't imagine doing that," he said quietly.

Hale ran his hand down to the withers, amazed at how soft and yet powerful the animal was beneath. Hale had spent time with horses, even the winged variety, but none quite compared to this. After a moment, he mustered up the courage to lean himself against the unicorn, laying his cheek to its neck.

"You know, I guess I always just thought that you were the sort of person who did that. If a muggle born had a body part that was valued on the black market, would you take it?"

Ares frowned at Hale's words and he just stared back at him for a moment. Honestly, he didn't think all that bad when it came to muggle borns - it was just his family's way of thinking and he did it to fit in. But he didn't expect Hale to understand that.

"I'm not some evil person," he said with a frown as he turned to head back out of the clearing and back to where he'd left his shoes and socks.

Hale had heard really terrible things about the Avel brothers. They seemed to live off of terrorizing other students and he'd seen some of the aftermath of their ire. But now he'd witnessed another side of him and he was having trouble reconciling the two.

When Ares left, so did the unicorn. It shied away from Hale and trotted back out into the clearing, off to do its own thing now that the boy who sang wasn't there. "You come off as some evil person," Hale said truthfully as he followed after him. "I thought that's how you wanted to come off."

"Then lets not talk anymore," Ares said back to Hale without glancing back at him.

He didn't know why, but his feelings were genuinely hurt and that wasn't exactly something that happened all too often. He was walking much faster than Hale, and when he found his shoes and socks lying in the grass and he sat down to tug them on.
