"Bogey," she says with a nod. "And Bond. I had a nanny who tried to get me to watch Barney and Sesame Street, but the story is that I started pretend shooting big purple or yellow things. It might've been the fashion year that purple was the new black." She dimly remembers an incident that made Dad laugh and Mom glare at them both.

"I had to see one of the S.H.I.E.L.D. therapists. The upshot was that they switched nannies and I spent more time on playdates with my parents' friends' kids."

She gets that tingle that tells her she's strayed into unknown territory. She'd read Qamar's file, but it was just words.

"Dad's only complaints are that Mom makes him eat his greens and occasionally chews him out for minor things. During one of those infamous poker games, Mikhail Romanov and I got caught smoking one of Dad's cigars. Mom lowered the boom on Dad for not paying attention. We were eight."
