Soiree Espionage
There was a week between the afternoon she worked her way into a recon partnership with Red Robin and the evening of the event and J'anna hadn't wasted a moment of it.  With the scant information she had been provided while Red Robin ate, she had done some of her own digging and her own research not just on the targets but also on the event they would be attending.  It had all lead to shopping.  One couldn't go to an event without a proper dress and there was the added complication: the fact that she kind of liked Red Robin so she wanted to not only look appropriate, but also pretty.  Not as though it would particularly matter, she had reasoned, but since she'd never gotten to go to prom (another consequence of Lian's endless pursuit of White Martians) she figured what the hell.

The preparation was all classic J'anna. She not only looked perfect but was done early and was properly waiting for Red Robin to show up, idly wondering if he'd be in cape and cowl.  That could be amusing.  There was one twist to her appearance, however.  Rather than being dressed in her typical June Cleaver meets J Crew modest fashion, the Martian was wearing a knockout of a blue gown that showed plenty of shoulder and was bare from her neck to the small of her back.

It was blue.  She liked it.

Tim Drake arrives at J'anna's place, still wondering if he'd done well by inviting the Martian in on this thing. There was no real reason to not to trust her, but he wondered how much training she could really have in this area of things. Lian might have been the best choice, but she was unavailable.

He heads into her building, adjusting the collar of his maroon shirt, covered by black Italian Silk. He stills his thoughts as he comes up the elevator, not wanting the Martian to know he's arrived.

He knocks on the door and waits for her to answer.

Surprised she hadn't heard him coming--and she presumed it was Tim--J'anna jumped a bit at the knock on the door then scurried to answer.

Her eyes went wide when she saw him, his actual face.

Oh gosh he's really cute...

"...hi?" She smiled, blinked, and stepped aside. "I think I expected you to look different."

"Oh." is all he can really say to that comment. He's speaking Tim, not Red Robin. His voice is at least two octaves higher and he looks like a smile would not be an alien expression on his face.

"I didn't think it would be appropriate to go in gear, though I do have it stashed in a safe place if necessary. Do you need more time to get ready or can you go now?" Tim asks, noting the dress. It flatters her form and he notes, sadly, that it reminds him of someone he used to know.

How do I look, Alvin? Giselle used to ask him, even though he'd always tell her she looked amazing.

He shakes his head to clear away the memory. Work is the focus now.

Cute but disinterested. J'anna noted that even with the lack of rasp and gear he was still somewhat grim. She wasn't sure what she had expected, but there was a flicker of disappointment that ran through her. When she picked up a hint of sadness from Tim's thoughts, she attributed it to that.

"Oh, I'm ready. We can go. I presumed you'd go over the plan with me on the way there, though I assure you've done some research and have a few strategies. Martians are good with strategy."

She smiled.

Tim returns the smile automatically, trying to remember how Bruce would come across to people who barely knew him but wanted to pretend they did. He always made people feel like they were the only one in the room he was talking to. Time to give some of that attention to J'anna.

He looks her straight in the eyes and smiles.

"Will you tell me what you've learned thus far? I'll see if matches up with what I know and we'll work from there." he says.

Looking someone straight in the eye was, in fact, a crapshoot. For most people one would have the desired effect of feeling like focus was entirely on them but when the same technique was applied to someone with enhanced abilities or a more critical mind...

...J'anna didn't buy it and just thought it was odd. She raised one brow slightly and turned away from him while he spoke, picking up her purse and double-checking the contents instead.

"They all have some skeletons, which is to be expected but I would really keep my eye on the art gallery curator," she offered as she turned around. "I stopped by one of her establishments last week just to get a feel for things and she happened to be there. Did you know that she's Bosnian?"

J'anna was certain he didn't because it wasn't information that was anywhere. She'd plucked it out of the woman's head, a fleeting memory that had passed as she looked over a particular piece of art that reminded her of a less pleasant time.

"It might be interesting to check into. I know the Momchev crime syndicate has Bosnian ties."

All right, that wasn't working. Maybe she was already focused on business as well; that would make this easier, though he'd hoped to figure out a bit more about her by talking.

"No, I didn't get the Bosnian part, but I was certain she was of Arabic descent. I was guessing Armenian to start. She'd be in an ideal position to sell off information, but let's not count anyone else out until we're sure." Tim says.

"It's good to see when someone else does their homework." Tim says.

"She also has two Swiss bank accounts," J'anna offered as she walked out the door, fairly gliding as she moved. "My suggestion would be that we systematically clear the others, then go in deep with her. I could get pretty close, Tim."

Walking towards the elevator, she looked back over her shoulder, red hair dancing down her back.

"You're driving, right?"

After.
[info]burningmartian

Tim had fallen asleep about an hour before dawn and once he was resting peacefully, J'anna slipped from the bed and back into her own form. She silently collected her clothing from the floor and put them back on, the fabric of her dress feeling strange against her skin after hours of sheets. She didn't want to leave just yet--she wanted to make sure Tim's stitches were still in place and that he was doing well when he woke--but she couldn't stay in the bedroom. The depth of what she'd done was starting to sink in so instead, she went out to the living room and curled up on the couch, her face towards the cushions as she closed her eyes and tried to not to think too much.

"I'm sorry...Giselle." Tim says sleepily, holding tight the pillow that he believes is the woman he once loved. For five years, he's been trying to find a way to let go of the hurt, the pain and above all, the soul-shredding guilt that accompanied her death.

He remembers, with perfect clarity, the last night of her life. He can never forget, because he dreams about it every night. The angle of the door that told him something was off right away. The disarray of their loft, because she hated things out of place. He remembers the scent of her perfume mixed with her blood and the scrawling of a madman on the wall.

"I should have...should have told you everything. I should have told you about...Gotham. About Robin. About Batman..." he whispers.

It wasn't your fault, Alvin. You were trying to help.

"But I didn't help. I didn't do anything until it was too late...for you." he says.

You can't save everyone, Alvin. You couldn't save me, but you can still save yourself. And I need you to do that now, for me. You pushed Marissa away, and you're keeping Zoey at arm's length. And you're ignoring what J'anna has been trying to tell you since she saw you.

"But...what if I lose them like I lost you?"

You /may/ lose them if you open your heart. You /will/ lose them if you don't. You can't wait for me to come back, because I won't. But I'll be waiting for you.

Tim can feel his heart breaking all over again. A part of him knows that, after tonight, he won't have these dreams anymore. He won't hear Giselle's voice in his dreams, encouraging him to live. He shifts restlessly in his bed, feeling consciousness creep in close on his heels and trying to stave it off, for just a few more seconds.

"Goodbye, Giselle. I love you." he says.

I love you, Timothy Drake. I knew the moment you got on the plane, but I wanted you to trust me enough to tell me yourself. Maybe...maybe you'll give her a chance. She's always been alone, but she will love you, if you let her. And you'll love her, if you let yourself.

"Which one?" Tim asks, needing just one more bit of information to go on.

You're supposed to be the heir to the World's Greatest Detective. You figure it out.

He can hear the smile in her voice and finally, his eyes open.

Giselle always did love to tease him.

She'd drifted off, but only briefly, when she heard the slightly muffled sound of Tim's voice in the other room. He was awake. Time for her to get up, get him fed, check his stitches, and go. That meant she had to get off the couch, but the idea of moving wasn't one she relished. Her body hurt. Good pain, but pain like nothing she had experienced before. Her cheeks blushed a bit as she thought about just why she hurt, but she quickly pushed the thoughts down. They weren't supposed to be her memories.

A deep breath taken, she pushed herself up and off the couch, making her way to the kitchen where she would make a little bit of noise as she started the coffee and discovered, to her horror, that the fridge was rather empty.

"Tim?" She knocked a bit on the door frame of his room, her eyes averted, a new sense of shyness infusing J'anna's presence. "You have no food. I hope it's okay that I placed a delivery order to that breakfast place down the street. I wasn't sure what you like...but you need to eat."

Tim was still groggy, but he was glad to see J'anna. He didn't know she'd stayed to help him out.

"Oh...yeah. Forgot to go shopping. I'll pay for whatever you ordered." he says, sitting up and groaning a little.

"Oh, no, that's okay. I've already covered it. I just wanted to make sure you were okay with food ordered in rather than home-cooked." She smiled a little, glancing up at him briefly.

"Um, you're still naked. You might want to cover up a bit, but I do want to check your stitches to make sure you didn't pop them last night..." Her voice trailed off a little and she looked away again, her cheeks getting a little pink again. "You ok?"

He doesn't remember.

J'anna wasn't sure how she felt about that. On the one hand this would let her pretend nothing had ever happened at all. On the other, it meant that what she had done had been for nothing at all. He didn't feel any better, and worse than that, she'd...

She didn't want to think about it. Repress, repress, repress. She wondered if Cerdian would be up for milkshakes later. She was going to need one. Or ten.

"If you'll bring the whiskey glass when you come out I'll get everything cleaned up," she offered as she turned and walked back out to the living room. It was good timing anyway. The food was there.

"I had whiskey? How bad was I?" Tim asks, still a little fuzzy on last night's events. He remembered being shot and a lot of pain. He remembered J'anna saving him and being with Giselle.

Last night with her was so vivid, so real...it was like she'd been there with him. He must have been out of it. But he felt better today, despite the gun shot.

"Hey, I'm sorry if I scared you last night, J'anna. Are you gonna stay for breakfast? Maybe we can go over the info on the info on the Shadow Broker we got?"

J'anna's mood had troubled Tim so that he went over last night in his mind, going over everything he could remember. The party, kissing J'anna, the shooting and getting back here. He never drank, even though he had the alcohol available. But J'anna needed something to help him so she used it...

and then he remembered how he felt like he'd been in bed with Giselle. The things she did to him were amazing, but so unlike her. It was almost like she was a different person.

And then he understands everything.

Oh, man. She probably doesn't even want to see me again. Tim thinks.

He eats the food that she ordered, because she might at least come back to check that. However, he needs to confirm this because if it really had happened...Tim wasn't sure how to repair the damage. He picks up the phone and dials J'anna's number, asking her to come over quickly because his stitches popped.

He popped his stitches. How could he have gone through the activities of the previous night stitches intact and manage to pop them sitting on the couch? Unless he was up doing stuff. That was possible, and worrisome. She told him she'd be there shortly, then hung up the phone. The shower had helped her center herself again. A good cry had helped as well and she allowed herself one shot of cream for good measure. The idea that Tim was hurt again was what really got her settled, though. Her affection for the man hadn't changed even with what she'd done and her newfound understanding that he was completely unavailable to her.

She showed up on his doorstep, a small medical bag in one hand, a box of homemade oatmeal cookies in the other, a Very Concerned expression on her face.

"I told you to relax, Tim," she chided softly when he let her in.

Tim brings her inside quickly and closes the door.

"So, what happened last night after you got the bullets out? Did I walk back to the bedroom and you stayed out here on the couch? Did I call for you at all during the night?" he asks.

Yes, his throat was a little sore, he'd noticed. It didn't take much to figure out where /that/ had come from.

Oh shit.

The stitches were clearly a ruse. And she'd walked into it only to have him ambush her about everything else. She panicked a little and felt herself grow anxious, her cheeks rising in color slightly.

"Um, you, uh, didn't call for me at all." That was true. He'd been screaming Giselle.

"I stitched you up. You didn't have any pain medication strong enough to let you rest so I had you drink your whiskey. You were scared and in pain and...and...you kept thinking about your girlfriend. All of these memories...they were so loud and you were so sad and in so much pain and...I just wanted you to rest so I, um...I shifted to look like her for you."

She averted her gaze a little.

"Please don't think I took advantage of you, Tim. You just...you really needed the woman you love. You were in so much pain, you'd lost so much blood...and the endorphins were good for you." She bit her lip.

"...we...we had sex while I looked like and you thought I was Giselle. Please don't hate me, Tim. I just wanted you to be okay..."

He's going to call the cops. He's going to scream at me and tell me to get out. He's going to tell me how pathetic I am. This...this is going to go so badly. I am never going to be able to show my face again. Stupid, stupid Martian. He doesn't even like you like that and you impersonated his girlfriend.

"I thought it would help..."

"I'm so sorry, J'anna." Tim says quietly. So it was true. He'd taken advantage of her in his weakness and now she couldn't even stand to be in the same room as him. He didn't blame her; right now, he really didn't think highly of himself.

"I don't hate you, J'anna. Obviously, you did the only thing you thought would help, and I took advantage of that. I...remember thinking that she was here, though I knew damned well it wasn't possible. But...I need to believe it to make myself feel better and I forced you into something you didn't want..." his voice trails off because he doesn't want to continue.

How was this any different from rape? How was he any different from the scumbags he beat to a pulp for forcing themselves on defenseless women. J'anna wasn't defenseless, but she had a kind heart, and she'd only wanted to help him when he asked.

And this was how he'd repaid that kindness.

"If you...if you want to tell Lian or the others what I did, I understand. If you want to call the cops, I understand that, too." he says.

She blinked with surprise. His thoughts were fairly clear and she could almost taste his guilt. The r-word crossed his mind. That was too much.

"You didn't do anything wrong! I...wanted to do it. I got to kiss you and touch you and feel wanted. I know it wasn't me you wanted or desired but I could pretend a little.

"And you were really wonderful," she said shyly. "I /like/ you, Tim. You haven't done anything wrong. I'm the only person responsible for this. And if I helped you, well. Everything's worth it.

"J'anna, you don't have to make excuses for me. If I forced you into anything I'll gladly--"

Wait. Did she say she consented? She wanted to be with him? Wow. And she'd done all of this knowing that he was seeing another woman in his mind the whole time?

"No, you aren't the only person responsible, J'anna. You...you saved my life. I really was ready to die last night. In a lot of ways, I've been dead for a long, long time. I haven't cared whether I live or die or what happens after I do, J'anna.

I loved Giselle with everything I had, but last night, I was finally able to let her go. She's...she's never coming back and I can accept that now. You were amazing." he says quietly.

"I know I was saying her name, but something inside me knew it was you. I've never been that way with anyone, not even her." he says.

He had been rough, in an excellent way, and he had bent and turned her body in the most exquisite ways. It had been hard to keep her shifted form intact a few times so intense were the sensations drowning her body. She'd screamed his name so many times before becoming incoherent. He had been incredible. But there was no way he suspected she wan't Giselle in the moment, was there?

" You don't have to say that. I've no regrets Tim. And. I care so much about you. I'm just so sorry you ever hurt so much. You were wonderful last night. I've never felt like that."
