The deadliest of all sins... Boredom
Adrian sat in his jazz club Papa Gumbo's, playing idly on the piano. The bar was moderately full, but he was more bored than anything. There was no challenge to life, no thrill to anything. He lived a life that most mortals would be happy to, yet he was less than content.

That probably had to do with the fact that he was a demon in mortal's clothing and had been doing it for far, far too long. He had been doing this for at least fifty years, though how many for sure, he wasn't exactly sure. Long enough for him to be getting tired of it all, that was for sure.

His shift was near an end, and for that, Adrian was glad. Just as he was finishing up his set, his replacement player was standing nearby. Adrian didn't like the man, but that didn't mean he was rude. For a demon, Adrian was quite respectful when he wanted to be.

"Ey Sin, ya'll almost done? How were the tips t'night?" the man asked as Adrian stood and stretched his spine. Green eyes turned to the man, and for a moment, Adrian considered his answers. The tips had been good, but Adrian also tried to minimize his interactions with his coworkers. It made his life harder when people thought they knew him too well.

"Tips were okay. You wanna stay in ragtime mostly.. They're not very entertained with anything before 1950." he said in a low tone, before gathering his bag and moved away. Adrian was hungry and at least after every shift he was afforded a meal. He slid onto a stool and dragged long fingers through dark hair before he sighed and let his shoulders slump.

Did demons have mid-life crises? Considering that he wasn't anywhere near the middle-point of his life, he didn't know what to think. But life sure was pretty dull, it wasn't nearly as bad as life in Hell, but it was really really boring. And he was really bored.

Alisa was not having a good day... at all. She was awoken to Irina thinking she probably did something bad with Nick (though she would not admit such), a slim possibility of her becoming a Champion (more like microscopic in Alisa's eyes), and then Ennie not wanting to see her. She felt very hurt, so much so that she canceled clothing shopping with Nick. Instead, Alisa remained in her new room until nightfall, and went out to her favor spot.

"Papa Gumbo's" was a good jazz club in the quarter, and served some of the best food Alisa ever tasted (next to Corey and Ennie's cooking). She even knew the bar-tender... one of the few kids from Fagan's mob who escaped Katrina... and Fagan's hold before they could. The man was a bit flamboyant, but it never bothered Alisa. After-all... he never made a move on her. She was the wrong gender!

"Awww... not another sad face on such a pretty girl!" The bartender, Louis, said. He placed his hand son his hips looking over at Alisa. "What's the matter, sweetie? Did someone say something to you again?"

"Non, non Louis... ah'm jus' ... well... ah could use sumt'ing good to eat is all." Alisa shook her head, taking a seat on the bar stool and spinning around it slowly.

"Well, sure, kiddo. I can have the cooks make your favorite." he smiled, resting a hand on the bar and looking at Alisa. "You knooowwww... we got a new cutie pie pianist. He's a bit pouty face right now. I think the piano needs a tuning... the actual piano, not him. I mean if it was him..."

"Louis... more den ah needed to ever know!" Alisa rolled her eyes, stopping the bar stool from spinning around anymore. She placed her own hands on the bar, getting off the stool and looking at Louis. "Lemme guess... ah get a free meal if ah fix de piano so it plays proper like?"

"You know me too well, honey! Tit for tat!" He chuckled, reaching out to ruffle Alisa's hair, despite the fact it made her flinch some. "Sorry Tinker... I'll go put in your order. You go backstage and work on the Piano."

"Oui, Louis... t'anks." She sighed, putting her hand sin her blue jean over-alls as she walked backstage of the club. Everything was behind a posh looking purple velvet curtain. It did not take her long to reach the grand piano on the stage, and open it up to take a peek inside.

Just touching the piano gave her it's workings. It was not an electrical machine like the other things she worked on, but a piano was still a kind of machine... just man powered.

Adrian had ate and then finished his drink when he noticed the girl heading for the stage. To be honest he was rather curious, after all she wasn't one of the musicians. Not really seeming to care so much that he was fraternizing with people at the bar, he stood up and followed after her. His curiosity demanded it.

Coming up to the old stage and finding the girl simply touching the piano, he raised a brow and shoved his hands into his pockets, hoping to seem less threatening.

"Are you here to fix that thing?" he then asked, his voice low and musical in the oddest of ways - almost like he sang every word. "It's been driving me crazy.. I can't stand it when the piano is out of tune."

Alisa nearly hit her head on the cover of the piano as she heard someone come up from behind her and talk. She yelped slightly, rubbing the back of her head as she looked over at the man. He was rather good looking, like Louis said... okay really good looking. Not as muscular as Argo... but still. Her red on black eyes focused over at the man, a slight blush creeping up on her cheeks as she spoke.

"Oui... looks like you got a few loose wires. Nuthin' a good screwdriver can' fix. Nuthin' needs to be replaced, really... jus' keep a good focus on de screws in here, an' make sure dey tight." She spoke softly, almost to the point where it sounded like a whisper. "Where are my manners... umm... ah'm Alisa. An' you?"

"Sin." replied the man, before he stepped forward to peer into the piano, standing right next to her. Idly, he brushed dark hair back from bright green eyes, and then flashed a smile to Alisa that held an almost predatory edge.

"I guess I should learn how to tune, although I usually take better care of my own instruments. This one gets beat all to hell." he then replied, before giving her a concerned expression, "Are you okay? Does your head hurt?"

If her eyes freaked him out, he made no indication. The man didn't one shy away from making eye contact with her.

"Non, mah head is fine... been hit wit' worse." She tried to make a joke out of it, rubbing the back of her head with her left hand, while her right went to her side pocket, taking out a screwdriver. She turned around, leaning over the piano as she starts to fix the screws inside of it, making sure they were tightened up.

Her cheeks were still a bright red as he kept looking at her. She spoke softly again, fixing a screw on the far side of the piano. "So... your name is Sin... interestin' name... is it short for sumt'ing? Or... umm... 'ow did you get de name?"

"My father gave it to me." explained Adrian as his lips pulled into a soft little smile. "I earned it.. No one wants to call me by my given name."

"Why is it that you're blushing, Alisa?" he then asked softly, his tone soft and gentle. He was curious about the girl, but he knew that if he pressed too hard, he might scare her away. Adrian knew that he was intense sometimes.

Alisa focused on a screw that was closer to her side of the piano. She heard his answer and decided not to be a pest on asking how or why he got such a name. Instead, she tilted her head to look back at him as he asked why she blushed.

"Ah blush when guys treat me nice... ah ain' used to dat." She was honest when she spoke, almost in a matter of fact kind of tone. Her head turned back to her work. She was on her tippy toes trying to reach everything in the piano. "Especially good lookin' ones."

Sometimes, Adrian forgot how he appeared to mortals. It was his turn then to flush a bit as a smile came to his lips, and he couldn't help but look away a bit in shyness. It was always so awkward for him when someone expressed interest in him - he avoided lovers due to his own.. monstrosity.

"It's a shame that more people aren't kind to you.." he then commented, for he couldn't help but watch her stretch and reach on her tippy-toes. It wasn't all that bad of a sight....

"People don' like mutants, simple as dat. Sure... we probably sell well on de black market... but... we ain' really wanted for much." She reached back over, getting her arm and screwdriver over to the last screw. She tightened it up quickly and then slipped out of the piano, looking back over at Sin. She put the screwdriver back in the pocket it came from, and fixed her over-alls some.

"Okay... why don' you try it out now, Sin... it should sound a whole lot bettah den before." She smiled proudly at her work, failing to see that he was blushing as much as her.

Raising a brow, Sin slid into the bench for the piano and lifted his fingers onto the keys. His eyes were on Alisa though as he played, letting music pour form him into the instrument. The song was a sad and aimless one.

"Well.. It's still a shame. It's not like you can really help that you're a mutant. From what I understand it's almost as random as being male or female." shrugging some, he then said "I don't get people who hold something like that against you."

"People fear what is different in dis world, Sin. Dey easy to condemn wit'out knowin' . 'ell... ah once told a friend dat if ah walked into a church... ah'd probably give ol' ladies heart attacks." She chuckled a little at her morbid joke... though it was true. "Ah suffered a lot jus' by bein' who an' what ah am. But... t'inks are finally turnin' around for me. Ah got some nice new friends... a new home... t'ings can only go up ah guess."

But deep down inside, she was still upset by Ennie, and the fact she may not be Champions material. Though so many thoughts nagged her, she did her best to focus on the positives.

"I doubt that you would give little old ladies heart attacks. You're too pretty." he replied, before smirking a bit up to the girl. "Human racism is still.. ridiculous. I'd like to know when people are going to realize that they are all just people.. Despite if you have the X gene or not."

He played a bit more, the music turning lighter, a bit more hopeful. "But things are going well? That is good.." he then murmured to her, his expression honest. Adrian was indeed glad to hear things were going better for her. From the sound of her voice, it seemed that things had been rough indeed.

Alisa noticed the change in music suddenly. He seemed to shift between sad notes and hopeful ones on a whim. She could not help but envy the man for being able to play such beautiful music. She closed the lid of the piano, creating a whole different sound, but still beautiful none the less.

She looked over at Sin, then the piano... just floored by what she was seeing and listening to. "Oui, life 'as given me plenty o' lemons... so much ah could probably open a lemonade factory!"

"I wish I had more to say, other than that I am sorry." murmured Adrian then, his green eyes turning up to meet her red on black gaze.

Adrian was struck with his desire to know more, to welcome her in to his life more... to make friends... but then at the same time, he didn't want to have to.. hurt her. Adrian was quite aware of what a monster he was, and that conflict within himself was starting to rise, to make the music flowing from him much darker. Like a crashing stormy ocean.

"I suppose it's best to have that attitude.." he finally said as his eyes turned to the keyboard, watching his hands move across the white and black keys.

"If ah didn' 'ave dat attitude, ah t'ink ah woulda been dead by now." She shrugged her shoulders. The music turned to a dark and dreary tone suddenly, but that did not change her stance or where she was by the piano. "An' you don' need to be sorry... it jus' happened, fact o' life, could be worse."

Alisa sighed, resting her head against the piano now, as she looked at Sin. He was so handsome, and he actually talked to her, and even blushed. This was so odd. First Argo, now this... perhaps things were really turning around after-all.

Smiling a bit, Adrian just let his eyes follow his fingers, his tone low and soft as he said "Could be worse.. indeed."

There was a flash of something, of the way the light caught his eyes, reflecting the light back from his retina much as a cat's eyes might. If Alisa was astute and had paid attention to his wording.. he had never included himself with any sort of "normal" person. Shifting a bit, he rolled his spine in a bit of body language that didn't seem quite normal and then offered the girl a bit of a smile that seemed almost.. too sharp. Lie if a great cat or some big predator were smiling at Alisa, though he meant her no harm.

"I have to remember that myself.. often. It's.. a lonely place that you and I both live." he then replied in a soft, almost sun tone.

Alisa did take notice of his eyes. Though she did not show fear at them, merely curiousity as she tilted her head and look at Sin some more. The way the light effected his pupils was like that of a cat. Perhaps he was not quite human like herself.

"You seem so acceptin' ... like you know what it's like to be different, mah friend." She also took note of how he shifted, and how his back moved some. It was unlike anything she had seen before... and she had seen alot! "Oui... it is a lonely place out dere, Sin. Sucks most o' de time... but like ah said many times, we jus' gotta make de best o' it."

"I have no reason to not accept anyone for whom they might be. I'm quite aware of what a monster I am; I'm just wearing a pretty skin so you can't see it." he then said softly, his eyes never going back towards Alisa's.

He suddenly paused, then scooted over a bit and said softly "you can have a seat if you want.. I don't mind sharing." His offer came innocently enough. Adrian was caught in a spell that Alisa wasn't even aware she had cast. Then again, he was starved in that way - for people to talk to who felt safe the way that Alisa did. It felt strange how he would find kinship with a human girl, but he wasn't about to look at the situation negatively.

"Have you ever played an instrument?" he then asked, his eyes finding her face, his lips offering a bit of a smile. He was a strange thing, the way he swung from one extreme to the other..

This caused Alisa to raise an eyebrow. She slowly took a seat next to Sin, looking down at the piano. "We are all monsters, Sin... in some way or form. But it don' mean we gotta prove people right an' live like'em."

She bit her lip as he asked her if she ever played an instrument. That was an easy answer to give him, but it still made her feel timid. She was a genius, self proclaimed and tested... yet she could not play a piano or any instrument. Sure, she could touch one, know how it worked, how it functioned... but playing required talent that she did not have.

"Non... ah ain' never been trained to play any instruments, Sin. Heck... ah come here an' jus' eat. Don' really stay long for de music... since ah try an' get back before ah'm missed, you know?" She smiled shyly, resting her hands on her lap. Alisa's eyes were focused on the keys of the piano. How beautiful they looked, and how skilled Sin's hands looked moving along them.

"Every song only has 7 notes..." he then murmured, settling his fingers over the board and played a simple scale. "Every song is built from these notes, although sometimes they are higher or lower than the original scale.. But they are still the same notes."

Grinning to her some, he then motioned to the keys, his fingers playing a scale as he said softly "This is the C scale.. or middle C.. The most common key signature." If she were brave enough to bring her hands up, he helped her get her fingers positioned. "Try it.." he encouraged.

She was indeed brave enough to place her hands on the ivory keys of the piano. They felt slick, even a little cold. Her red on black eyes focused down at her own fingers, just feeling the keys.

"So... each song is jus' seven keys? Really? Ah never knew dat... den again, ah ain' put much t'ought into music. An' mah powers make feelin' dis piano a lil' werid. Ah can actually "feel" de piano. It's workin's... it's parts... almost like lookin' into someone's soul an' knowin' what makes'em tick."

Alisa was relaxing more, which was hard for her. She was still used to having a high guard, but since she met the Champions, Argo, and Nick... she was slowly easing into society again. But she was moving a bit fast. Instead of barring people completely, she was letting almost anyone in. There seemed to be no balance at the moment, but she could care less. She felt happy, free even.

"Well - every song is combination of these seven keys, or their relative octave up or down." replied Sin with a bit of a smile to the girl. Talking about music settled him and grounded him. It helped him focus on not being nervous and still.. connect.

Smirking a bit, he started to play a bit lower, playing harmonies to the keys that Alisa depressed. Where she saw the mechanical side of the piano, he saw the musical. His voice was soft when he said "I do not have quite such useful powers.. I am just driven mad at times and must let it out, or else I might explode.. The music is a living, breathing thing inside of me. It speaks far more eloquently than words at some times."

"Ain' all great artists driven mad by dere muses?" She raised an eyebrow, gently pushing down on her keys and trying to follow the notes she heard, and the keys that Sin pressed down on. It was very hard for her to try and figure out what to do... she could not read notes, so she was playing by ear.

Sin seemed to have made her forget about her meal that Louis was getting for her. If anything, he had her seduced by the tone of his voice, and the hauntingly beautiful notes he played on the piano.

"This is more than just a muse.. It's in my blood, a part of my soul.." replied Sin, as he shyly looked to Alisa. The usually brash and uncaring man was usually made shy why he spoke of himself. He was acutely aware of what an abomination that he was, and that often made him unwilling to share too much. Lest whomever this new person in his life find out the truth and run screaming from him.

Honestly he wouldn't blame them. It had happened before.

Tilting his head to the side, Sin said softly "It's like your powers, just.. different. It's as much of me as your powers are a part of you, but it's.. useless in many ways. It's a madness that I must fight, and it doesn't seem to do much more than simply entertain others. While the thought of being able to entertain and still be highly skilled while doing it is nice, it is impossible. These people sitting here don't want to hear my creations. They come here to ear Cajun food and listen to jazz. And not even good jazz but the over played over popularized songs that I'm sick of playing."

As his lips closed, Sin suddenly realized he had been ranting. He gave a nervous little laugh and then said softly "Sorry.. My geek was showing.."

"Well... from what ah heard, ah like your music. It feels more powerful den de normal stuff ah hear in de quarter. Like it comes from de soul." She smiled more, her slender fingers still moving over the ivory keys of the piano. "An' it's alright... bein' a geek ain' a bad t'ing you know. Dere non enough geeks in dis world, an' too many stupid people."

She seemed very much at ease trying to follow the notes he played. She could not believe how life was changing for her. for the good, the bad, and the better. So many new friends, so many new events... perhaps it was good that she finally let herself out of her shell.

Laughing a bit as he relaxed, Sin shook his shaggy dark head and flashed Alisa another one of his wide and toothy shark-like smiles. "Being a Geek isn't a good thing unless you're already one, or were one. Most people are too busy being conserned about who might see them and what they might think to ever want to become a geek themselves." He then said, his voice dropping into a low, velvet tone. Sin's voice held that sing-song quality at this register especially, although now it took on more of a purr. Truth be told he wasn't even aware if they were flirting or not, he was so engrossed in their conversation.

Drifting closer to the girl, Sin found his words dying on his lips as he looked at her. He had a tendency to be mesmerized by beauty, ad Alisa had quite a lot that she was quite unaware of. Her sheer innocence called to the demon within him, and it made his palms itch to do more than simply play an odd, stumbling little song. He wanted to play his guitar, to sing for her and see what inspiration she drew out of him.

With a blink, Sin had to give himself a bit of a shake as he thought, Be careful, Adrian. She is mortal, she will never understand. All she would see would be hooves and horns; best to just let her see the man and never the monster.

Offering her a bit of a shy smile, he then tried to steer himself from his thoughts as he asked gently, "Do you have many friends? I would think you do, you're so personable."

"Well... actually... ah umm... jus' got some friends not to long ago." She gave a slightly shy smile, watching as he moved closer to her. Her cheeks flushed quite abit as her own fingers stumbled from the piano keys and rested in her lap. "Ah'm kinda friends wit' Louis here... an' den ah got mah twin broder, an' de Champions. De Champions are real nice to me. Especially Argo... he's um... a Demi-God ah guess you could say. An' mah boss Nick... he's kind o' a demon... an' kinda not... but he's good to me. An' dere's Corey who's a mutant like mahself. he's really innocent an' carin' . An' Irina an' Lyta are pretty cool, too... dey tryin' to make me look pretty an' stuff ah guess."

She spoke highly of her brother, the Champions, and her boss. Every one of them was kind to her, even Louis at Papa Gumbo's. Sin, too seemed to be very kind. Perhaps the world was not as bad as she thought it was.

"Ah wasn' very socially capable until recently, Sin."

"I've been there. English isn't my first language." Sin shared. "It was scary, living in this place where I couldn't understand anyone it passed though, and for the most part, I do not fear people anymore. Little of humanity surprises or frightens or disgusts me." Especially after what I've seen.

The mention of a demon caught his attention, and he raised a brow to her. "He's a demon.. but not.. how is that possible?" He then asked. "I thought you either were.. or were not. At least in my experience.."

Isn't that the truth? Sin thought to himself as Alisa spoke, though his connotations of the meaning of her words was far.. bloodier. He had lived the life of a soldier, his hands slick with angel's blood for years at a time. He had marched upon armies of Hell and won - time and time again. He was a lord, there in Hell, a title bestowed upon him for his bravery and viciousness in battle... but all that death and destruction had done little but injure him. Drive him away.

Part of Adrian wanted to reach out to the girl, to help her see that things were not nearly as bad as she thought - that it was all just a matter of perception. To him, even though her life might have been rough, it was a cakewalk compared to Hell. Adrian would have switched places with Alisa in a heartbeat, to have anyone in his life even half as caring as her friends and family sounded.

Adrian had grown up alone. He lived alone. He was always fucking alone. But that was the price to pay when you were an abomination before man and god, something that never should have been. A halfbreed.

Instead of saying anything, he simply pressed his lips together and continued to play, thinking over his words quietly. "I.. apologize if I was rude - I was merely curious." he then murmured to her. "I never meant to ask too much.. I just.. was wondering how that was possible. Still - I'm glad that he's here and part human. I assume he grew up on Earth. That's a good thing."

She tried to smile still, her eyes now just watching him. He seemed a bit pained... but most artists were, right?

Sin offered her a bit of a ghostly smile, this one sad. "Sometimes, people don't want to know the whole story.. they'd rather have this.. romanticized, dumbed down version of the truth."

He sighed then, his fingers starting to slide over the keys in the form of a song. As he began to sing the song had a haunting quality, a yearning that was hard to miss or deny. The chorus of the song was most haunting though, and spoke of the heartbreak of never having what you wanted seemed to have particular relevance. At least to Sin, it did.

Alisa sat there, somewhat stunned as he began to sing to her... well, she though he was singing to her. This man was highly talented... not like how Argo was talented in the ways of speech, or how Nick was talented in bikes, or even how Corey was talented in art. This felt like a completely natural talent, something rarely seen by mortals. She remained silent, just listening to the hauntingly beautiful lyrics that came from his lips.

With her cheeks flushed and her hands resting in her lap, Alisa slowly closed her eyes and kept listening. She wanted to enjoy this moment for as long as possible.

It wasn't until the song was over that Sin realized he had been singing. Well, he had been aware that he had started, but soon the song took over and Sin found himself falling into it, his voice rising and falling with the emotion that he sung of.

He was nearly breathless from it all by the time the song was done. It was like a release of sorts, though nothing at all could be found sexual about it for him. In many ways, his music was better that sex; it was more fulfilling and fewer people got hurt (or their blood drank.) He found himself gasping for air, his fingers pressing down on the keys in a discordant way while his cheeks flushed as well.

Apparently Alisa was a quite inspiring person - she had yanked a song out of him that he wrote in the depths of despair. A song he had written trying to express his desire for someone.. just one person.. to love.

"I'm sorry, not sure why that came out, but you were supposed to hear it." he all but whispered to her, his face turned down towards the keys. At this angle, his eyes caught the light again, reflecting back a kaleidoscope of colors; the low light of the stage catching his mirrored retinas in the oddest of ways.

"It was... well... beautiful." Alisa smiled a bit more, trying to hide her face with her hair as she sat there, just stunned. "What on Earth inspired you to even... you know... singe such a... a lovely song like dat, Sin?" Because she knew it could not have been her.

Now, there just felt like there was an awkward silence between the two. The only sounds that could be heard now were the people who clapped for the song that was played, and the busy sounds of forks hitting plates and glassing being held to toast.

"I don't know. You inspired me to it.. reminded me of something that the song resonates about myself." replied Sin, a shrug to his shoulders.

The silence wasn't so much awkward for him, but he could tell that the girl was nervous. "Wanna get down off this stage and talk where it's a bit more private?" he asked softly.

Well that just floored her. She inspired him... to sing? This was just so odd to hear. Shaking her head some, Alisa took the time to absorb his works, a faint smile on her face as she looked up at Sin. Despite all that she had been through, despite being shut off from people for so long... she could still be a bit gullible at times. So much so, she did not see any harm in going somewhere private with Sin. They were only going to talk, after all.

"Oui, dat would be fine by me." Her voice was as soft as his as she slowly got off the of piano bench.

Sin wasn't trying to be a creep, he just really wanted to talk to her and wanted off that stage to do it.

Leading the way, Sin came down the stairs to the stage and then drew Alisa to a table near the bar. He picked up a menu then, his expression sliding into a slow smile as he asked "Did you already order? If so, I can pick it up on my tab.."

He tried to play it off, though a touch of red came to his cheeks as he said "I don't make friends this fast usually.."
