Concession Stand in the Middle of Knowhere.
Jean-Louise made two kinds of rock candy.  The kind with sugar and the kind made of mineral quartz, because some of the silicon-based lifeforms would get their hopes up when they saw the first kind.  She was careful to keep the two separate so she'd always sell the right one.

Business was pretty good.  In a place this diverse, she didn't have as much market-targetting to do, but she still tried to pay attention to possibilities.

She'd also fixed some pizza and was having a break to have a slice herself.

Candy may not normally be much of Iason's thing, but since bringing her ship in, he figured he might as well at least check on the Earth girl's shop while he's in the station.

"How's business?" he asks, settling against one of the walls of the little shop.

Jean-Louise looked up and actually smiled. "Hey. Doing pretty well, thanks. Want some pizza? On the house, for my hero and all."

"I'd love some pizza. Not sure where you found all the ingedients here, but it smells good. I appreciate it... any break from rations." Which he usually just doesn't bother eating, since its just a luxury anyway. Proper food, or nothing.

"Yeah, I had to make some of the ingredients from re-scratch; used the protein chains in the rations as a base." She served him up a nice hot slice. "It's the New York style; my Dad had a bias."

"Creative." he tries it, and nods approvingly. "I don't quite understand the New York and Chicago rivalry. They're almost different foods. Both have their up sides."

She smiled more wryly this time. "Regional snoberies don't need to make sense. Us versus them: it's the human way. Maybe the sentient way; I haven't been out long enough to say."

"Its true just about everywhere, I suppose. How are you doing in adapting to life out here?"

"It's okay. Can earn a living a lot easier, and at least when people stare at the freak, they're actually just staring at the human."

"Very nice of you to say," and little more. She had a mirror. she could see the minute scars all along her face, and she knew what they 'meant'. "But here, I can remember it's nothing personal. Everyone's weird to everyone else."

He can hear the variation in her tone, suggesting disagreement. Only so much one can do. "That much is true. A number of the people out here and beyond have never seen a human - and if they have, its mostly just a few notable individuals like the X-Men."

She nods. As to the other thing, he did his part as a decent fellow, and their being friends is going to work all the better since he doesn't press issues, Jean-Louise figures.

"Yeah, I bet. They tend to know anything about eternals, or do they just sort of lump you in with humans if they don't know your Mom?"

"Let's see... a number of languages, poker, chess, Italian cooking, bbq in three styles, French gourmet cooking, a bit of Asian cooking, several Skrull deception games, two Kree military strategy simulations, surfing, golf, wine tasting, a couple of Shi'ar games you might relate most closely to tennis and flight simulators, seven instruments, marble carving and a bit of painting, both Earth and Shi'ar primary styles."

Jean-Louise cants her head -- not about the Trump part. Iason was so calm about everything it was reasonable he'd be blase about being friends with Donald Trump or wahtever. "What did you think was the point?"

Jean-Louise tries to suppress a giggle and grin more sympathetically. "They say the best players are the ones who aren't counting their money. Probably why my whole family is so terrible at it."

"So you were putting your impressive minding-your-own-business skills to work and got into high stakes poker. Makes perfect sense." As she talked, Jean-Louise checked the oven. Yeah, needed cleaning. She checked the bottle of cleaner. Almost empty. So she filled the bottle with water and basically just bit her lip in frustration until the color and chemical pattern changed.

"More or less, yeah." he agrees, watching her doing the transmuting. "That's impressive. Almost moreso than the ship repairs, really."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]notafailure
2012-10-26 01:31 am UTC (link)
"Thanks. It gets easier with practice. Sort of. The ship repairs are tough because I don't know what's wrong. Here I know what's wrong. 'it's water instead of what I need, and I don't want to shell out the cash for more.'"

"There's some intuition to it, but we've learned better than to trust it. So plenty of library chemistry books and Dad's Guide to What's A Bad Idea, yeah, and then enough staring at the stuff to get a feel for it. Chemistry's easier than physics. I don't know how you guys do the warp gate trick."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]cosmic_son
2012-10-26 02:08 am UTC (link)
"To be perfectly honest, neither do I. Not the physics of it, anyway. It was something I learned more in application than in theory."

She smiles. It was kinda nice that the remarkably-on-top-of-things people weren't necessarily on top of everything.
