Who: Andromeda Black and Ted Tonks
Where: The library!
What: Meetings and all.
When: Late January, 1971

She really should have been studying harder, all things considered. It wasn't that she didn't have motivation to do so -- she did want sorely to become some sort of useful person in the Wizarding World so that she wouldn't have to rely on her family's fortune for her whole life (the thought of it left a bad taste in her mouth) ... but she did like he spare time, and homework during the year just seemed like a waste.

That was why she'd gotten Elena Nottingham to do her potions work. She hadn't bullied her ... much. It had been more of a gentle sort of half-true prodding, really!

No, really.

Andromeda tapped her sugar quill against her lower lip and kicked a foot up onto the table in front of her, leaning back in her chair far enough that the front two legs lifted up off the ground.

Okay, applications of wormwood include...

Merlin, she was bored already.

Ted was not a very happy boy. If there was one thing that did not sit well with the lackadaisical Hufflepuff, it was doing homework--even more than that, it was doing homework for N.E.W.T. level classes. There was just---too much, it was too bloody much, and he already knew he didn't want to get a job in the wizarding world anyway, so he didn't really see what the point was in his professors making such a big deal about giving him all of this to do.

He knew how to unlock a door. He could levitate a feather, and turn a toad into a teacup and illuminate a room and summon shit. What else important was there, really?

Frowning, Ted stood up, shutting his book with a pointed snap! and stuffing it into his bag. Well, at least his roommates couldn't say he didn't try--he'd stayed in the library a whole ten minutes this time! Not that any of those prats could really talk, it wasn't as if Hufflepuffs were known for being the most studious of---

---oh, hey.

The Library had just gotten a whole lot more interesting.

Blinking twice, Ted backtracked a few steps to the aisle of books he'd just passed. The one with the table and the slightly familiar and smoking hot bird sitting in it.

"Hey there, did it hurt when you fell out of heaven?"

Honestly, she'd half-expected it to be Guilderoy Lockhart standing in front of her with a line that awful. But when she glanced up from her textbook -- no, it was the not-completely-tragic looking Hufflepuff. It was a pity that his pick-up lines were possibly the worst she'd ever heard, apparently.

Muggleborn, her sister had reminded her upon the instant she'd mentioned that one of the boys from her year who was in Hufflepuff wasn't completely horrid. Bellatrix had that habit of crushing her dreams quickly, but it was ... true. She pursed her lips in a tight line and tried her best not to laugh in his face.

It worked ... mostly. "Sorry, I thought I heard something -- but that must've just been my pages turning since I don't see anything worth my time at the moment."

Which might've been a lie. Maybe she cast a quick glance at him before looking at her text, but she'd blame that on the fact that Potions ingredients were just that boring.

Ahh, with that attitude, Ted had no problem placing who this girl was the moment that she opened her mouth. Andromeda Black, the lesser of the Black sisters---at least in the general bitchiness department, which... didn't really mean too much when your older sister was Bellatrix Black, but still. She didn't go around killing small animals in her free time that he knew of, so that was something, right?

Not to mention he'd always not-so-secretly thought that she was one of the most gorgeous girls to come through Hogwarts in all his years there.

Dramatically, Ted clutched at his chest in response to her reception and sighed loudly. "Oh, how she aims to wound me with her sharp Slytherin tongue." Relaxing, he leaned up against the bookcase next to him and smirked down at her. "You know, that's honestly no way to say hello to someone."

"Neither is implying that I'm some sort of falling object from space. Here's a tip - try using that squishy Hufflepuff heart of yours to come up with something halfway romantic next time." Ah, damn. He was making such a spectacle of himself that she couldn't help but glance up from her book again before she knew it.

This was going to become a disturbing trend, she could tell. And she could just imagine how her sister was going to react when she heard that she was even talking to the bloke. Then again ... did that really seem like such a terrible thing? She was starting to get sick of her sister's manic eagerness...

"And most proper blokes would at least have given their name by now." Not that both of them didn't know who the other was anyway, but still. It was nice to feign innocence.

Ted's brow rose high, eyebrows disappearing under the long mess that his haircut turned into during any length of time away from his mum. "What, you mean that's not romantic?" he feigned surprise. "Goodness, then what would you like to hear? Do tell me so that I can go back and get it right."

He crossed his ankles and idly played with the ends of undone bumblebee tie draped over his neck. "And although I am not a proper bloke, it was not my intention to leave you so in the dark. You honestly mean to say that you don't know my name?"

"If I were to tell you what I'd like to hear, I'm sure it would offend your delicate feminine sensibilities."

Okay, so that had been flirting without even meaning for it to be -- but he was cute and damned if her family's name didn't serve to scare off even some of the Slytherin boys who had been prospects now and again. She did her best to focus back on her book in hopes that ignoring him would ... well, make him go away.

"Why would I have any idea who you are, exactly? I mean, it's not like you're part of the Names I grew up with." Half-hearted jabs at his blood-status would work, right?

Not nearly.

The only thing, it seemed, that Andromeda's attempts to insult his blood status did was elicit a wide smirk from him. It was interesting how all of the purebloods like the Blacks seemed to think that the mudblood insults continued to hold as much power as they did the first time they were said. This was hardly the case---Ted couldn't honestly say, with the frequency of which he had been called some rude name during the past seven years, that he was even the least bit offended anymore. It was like being called a butthead or something of the sort; it just got old.

"Oh, I don't know, because we've had at least one class together since we began going to this school," he provided with a shrug. "But I'm Ted Tonks, if you really don't know."

"Really," she mused, running her sugar quill along her bottom lip in a way that she knew drew attention to her mouth, "Because I don't recall having any classes wherein I was inclined to gouge out my own eyes. Perhaps I was mistaken." Andromeda was not going to be flirting with Ted Tonks any bloody time soon if she could help it.

She had restraint, she could do it! While it probably should have been a chief concern, his blood status was less worrisome than the fact that she really did have to start studying at some point. But what was the quickest way to do that?

...her lips tightened a little. Oh, she knew exactly the way to get rid of him in a hurry. Andromeda moved surprisingly quickly (or perhaps unsurprisingly quickly, if you considered who her older sister was and how many hexes she'd had to dodge over snarky remarks) to grab either side of Ted's tie and pull him in close enough that they were nearly nose-to-nose. Never mind how awkward the position was.

"And I'm sure," she kept her voice quiet, "You know who I am."

Well, alright, this was the first unpredictable thing she'd done so far, and it would be a downright lie of Ted to say that it didn't excite him--even if he was sort of confused as to why her mood seemed to flip a 180 so suddenly. He couldn't really tell if she wanted to chase him off or snog him, and the hell if that didn't turn him on in some backwards sort of way.

He had to brace himself with a hand on the table so that he didn't fall forwards and end up on top of her (oh wait, maybe he should just--), and one hand on the back of her chair.

"Ah, everyone knows who you are, Miss Black," he replied, doing his best to look unaffected by their sudden closeness. "Even those of us 'lesser beings' than yourself."

When Andromeda decided if she wanted to chase him off or snog him, she'd be sure and let Ted's mind know. The moment that she'd actually moved to pull him in close she'd realized that her plan was definitely going to backfire in the worst of ways, because instead of wanting to blow him off and shatter any sort of hope he might've had of something happening ... she was looking at those admittedly lovely eyes of his.

While he spoke, she worried on her lip. It helped her think, if nothing else. Her fingers curved tighter into his tie but she didn't tug him any farther forward -- she knew he'd be falling atop her if she did. Instead, she fixed her gaze on Ted again, letting her voice come out in a slow purr. "I'm certain, Ted, that you are right. But if you'll excuse me." She felt rapidly as if she were losing her nerve -- she flattened her palm against his chest and planned to push him back again, but found herself giving only a feeble shove instead of the forceful thrust she'd had in mind.

Wait wait wait wait wait wait---

Ted arched a brow at her weak little shove, and he wondered if the same girl that had grown up with Bellatrix Black could possibly be that shitty at shoving a man off of her; because seriously, he hadn't even moved, and that hadn't felt like it was so much something she had her heart in.

Oh, this was good. This was so good, so much better, even, than he had imagined it could be.

In the few centimeters that were still there to separate them, Ted leaned forward most of that distance, his palms aching as he had to grip onto his bearings even tighter to avoid falling. He rested his forehead against Andromeda's and looked straight into her eyes--which, at such a close distance was slightly painful, but it did at least make it impossible for her to look away like that. "Come on," he said with a quiet laugh, "You're not going to tell me to excuse you after you've captured my attention so thoroughly, are you?"

Good? Merlin, this was no good at all. Ted was leaning closer to her than she'd thought was even possible considering the angle that she'd pulled him in at and he was talking again -- fucking hell, this was nerve wracking. And she couldn't look away from him right now. Her mind was racing with all the reasons that this was a terrible bloody idea but it was hard to take any of them seriously when he was so close ... so she did the first thing that came to mind and muttered something about not asking nicely more than once before she smacked him.

Rather hard, in fact -- harder at least than she'd been meaning to, but she'd felt cornered despite bringing this situation on herself -- and the moment that she'd done so she managed to muffle her squeak only by bringing her hand up to her mouth and looking rather shocked.

Oh, I really should say something...apologetic.

But apology had never been the strong point of any member of the Black family tree.

Ted had no idea what had just happened. One minute he was only a thought away from kissing her, and then without warning she'd flipped all crazy bitch on him and smacked him! And--she was the one that had pulled him in, so Ted didn't even know how the hell that logic was supposed to work. Sure, he'd encroached even further upon her personal space than she had made him already, but it could still be argued that this was her fault entirely!

Reeling a little, he stepped back from her, nursing his stinging cheek. She really had to have learned a thing or two from her sister, not the least of which was how to hit a guy--that had hurt far more than any slap from any girl should hurt.

"Seriously?" he asked, wide-eyed but undeniably agitated. "Seriously? What the hell is wrong with you?"

That was possibly the least helpful thing she could possibly have done, she decided. Andromeda frowned, leaning her head back against the wood of the chair with a loud 'thunk' so that she wouldn't have to watch the way he was cradling his cheek.

"Do you really need to ask what the bloody fuck's wrong with me?" She snapped, still staring pointedly at the ceiling. This was not in the least bit his fault -- except for him being so bloody handsome, of course -- and she knew she shouldn't have been pushing this further, but at least if he thought she was a crazy bitch, this problem could be avoided completely.

"Look, you just need -- to go. Please?" She'd already made a damn fool of herself, after all. No need to prolong it.

Maybe he was a fool for hoping, but Ted had actually had a shred of faith that she was going to apologize to him. For just a second, he thought that maybe she was a decent person who cared when they smacked someone, even if it was someone so much more lowly than herself--someone who apologized when they did something wrong, no matter how demeaning it was.

But, no, of course not. He had been stupid to ever have faith in a Black girl, not when he already knew what they were like. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Well, at least he wouldn't make that mistake again. Ted's hand dropped from his cheek and he shouldered his bag again. "You don't have to ask, I'm already gone," he scoffed at her, turning on his heel to leave the Library.

Really fucking stupid.
