Over due for a brain update
Along with the brain scans (to make sure it wasn't broken), and the body scans (to make sure the rest of her was healing), Sammy knew she'd have to talk to one of the psychologists. Her appointments were usually with Doctor Samson, but there were other, more important things taking up his time. She'd been willing to wait until he was free, but the deputy director overrode that by virtue of "because I said so!"

Sometimes it wasn't fair that Mom was the deputy director.

She managed to postpone it until after the funeral services were all attended, and then landed herself back in a med bed waiting for Dr. Morse to appear. Dr. Morse would be the one to decide if she could return to active duty. As far as cracked ribs would allow.

To say that reading Fury's files (after getting the clearance to do so) was fascinating to say the least, but Valini did her best to look at it analytically. She wanted to be as up to date as possible before talking to a patient, and all of her SHIELD patients seemed to have stubbornness issues anyway. IT was good to have an even hand with them from the get-go.

Appearing at the room at the proper time, she offered a bag of donuts and two coffees. "Hello, Sam. I brought some snacks, because even a SHIELD-run hospital can't do a thing with their food."

Dr. Morse got immediate points for calling her Sam. She hated to be called Samantha. Outside of her parents, only Uncle Cap got to call her Samantha, and that was because he was Captain America.

She tried a smile, tinged with impatience. Lots of impatience. She wanted to be out getting things done. "Thanks. The coffee in here is all decaf. Something about the caffeine interacting with the drugs. Except I refused the drugs and they still won't give me real coffee."

"Well, there is also the idea of pumping caffeine into a bed-bound patient who's already squirrelly as it is," she added, but handed over the coffee anyway. It freed up a hand to drag a chair over and sit down. "Why not the drugs, by the way? The side effects getting to you or you just really wanted some coffee?"

Sammy took a sip of the hot coffee and sighed happily. "It's not me being brave. Drugs dull me down and my reaction times suck." Blue eyes watched the doctor closely. "Did they let you in my files?"

"And your reaction times are important when you are charged with bed-rest, in a highly secure hospital," she added innocently, sipping her coffee. Mmm pumpkin, thank you Fall. She nodded to Sammy's question though. "Yes, I did. I'm afraid it's necessary, it's harder to do my job correctly when I don't have all the cards."

"You never know in this job," Sammy said quietly. After all, the helicarrier was supposed to be secure.

"Control is an issue for me because seesawing back and forth in a time out will use me up faster and make me worthless." Pause. "You did read about that and my years with the Avengers for training?"

Trust and releasing control, though after a trauma event like that, it was expected. Valini nodded, settling the cup on a surface top to fold her hands in her lap. "Yes, I did. A long regime to learn how to control the power, even implement it when capable." She paused and tilted her head, asking quieter. "Did you have a moment like that in the helicarrier?"

Sammy took a bit to answer, sipping coffee and taking slow breaths. Confession didn't come easy. Too much spy blood in her veins, maybe.

"I couldn't get out," she finally said.

"Ah, of course. There was plenty of adrenaline and urgency, wasn't there?" she agreed and nodded to herself. And by draining herself in the middle of crisis, she rendered herself out of control and inactive when needed. Made a bad situation worse.

"That shouldn't have mattered! I've been in plenty of emergency situations and worse. I train hard to handle the adrenaline rush and make it work for me. If I can't do that, I'm useless."

"From my standpoint, your powers are an enhanced version of a panic attack," she replied mildly. "The point of an attack is rarely to be controlled. Or, I should ask, have you trained all your life for the sheer magnitude of adrenaline and fear involved in 'Jesus Fuck, We're Under Attack And Crashing'?"

Sammy glared at Dr. Morse's oh, so reasonable tone. "Actually, I was raised for 'Jesus, Mary, an' Joseph, We're Under Attack and Crashing!' If you tell him I've been having panic attacks for the last seven years, he'll pull my carry conceal permit and my espresso machine."

"Alright, mine is shorter," she conceded and frowned. "A secret weapon, perhaps, but not the secret weapon. And that is a startlingly one-dimensional analysis of yourself." She gestured with her hand. "In the most basic definition of your ability, and you've been trained to handle yourself during an episode. No reason to disqualify you. This time, the odds were over-whelming. It sucks, big time."

Balls, I did post a reply last night, it got eaten. Sorry.

"You didn't hear the rumor that I'm really an LMD? I kind of enjoy that one."

The coffee was growing cold, which never stopped Sammy from drinking it. She turned her attention to the cup in her hands. "I try to be realistic, Doctor. Fury is not an easy name to have in SHIELD. I need a hook to be the best candidate for director one day, and this ability, sucktastic as it is most of the time, is it. So I have to control it. I couldn't get out. Haven't tried since the crash."

Valini smiled. "Yes. I think someone made a Fem-bot joke and suddenly ate dry-wall for that one." No, no, Legacies like Sam did have a lot of pressure to do as much as their predecessors did. "I would like to think," she mused out loud. "They would be more interested in the capabilities like strategy, pattern recognition and tactics for a new Director than 'does she have a spiffy trick?' Also, with all due respect to Fury, it's not like his batting average was stellar either."

She scowled at the woman, scoffing at the idea. "I would like to think you have enough sense to not start noodling around until you had a clean bill of health!"

"That's very true, and I'm learning those skills as thoroughly as I can. I have big pool of teachers to draw from, even if Captain America likes to lecture at 5am. No, I want people to wonder how it is that Sam Fury can know things she shouldn't have been able to discover, and be in places she couldn't possibly be in. Can she bring everything she learned and her connections to the superhero world to the head office and make it work?" Sammy had to smirk. "And do we dare let her go off to create her own little strike team with the kind of backing she can get?"

No comment to the kind of sense she might have. Sammy was as uncooperative with medical opinions as her father. "I'd like people to think that too, but the simple truth is that I'm scared to get stuck alone."

She had to smirk, that was quite the imagination the woman had on her. "And with the added bonus of depth perception, imagine that."

"Caution is not the dirty word some of you agents consider it, but I am glad you didn't push yourself too fast and while wounded." Valini sighed a little, but pondered for a moment. "Would a refresher training session settle these nerves? At least with some guidance, you could reassure yourself of your control, perhaps even galvanize it, yet with someone watching out for you."

"Does that mean I have to sit through one of Cap's lectures?" Sammy had to chuckle at the idea. "He was a huge influence on my training. I see what you're saying, I just don't know how that kind of monitoring can be done. By the time an outside monitor knows what's happening, it's too late and I'm dead to the world for a day."

She paused. "I take that back, I do know how it could be done, but I'd need to take someone with me. The colonel did it once, just to see what it was like. It kind of unnerved him, I think. Tim always thought it was interesting."

She held up her hands on that one. "That's out of my league, I'm afraid. But you do work with a whole department of scientists who recreated the Flubber experiment to verify the elasto-psycho potentials. On a dare. If someone needs to invent a tele-relativity sensor and monitoring system, it's probably someone here. Or try your luck with the occults." Valini paused to word her response to the suggestion. "He's a dear friend and would want you safe. He'd also be more careful than OSHA on testing you."

Dr. Morse had a healthy dose of self-preservation. Good for her.

"Tim has been my best friend since we were in diapers. I shouldn't have been surprised to see him in a 'carrier crash."

Yes well, same what can be said about Dugans and trouble goes well for Furies too. "I suppose not. About him being at work in a carrier, I mean. But it's good to hear you two could be friends for so long, maybe a visit would keep you from getting too stir-crazy."

"He resigned from SHIELD to work for Stark Inc. They're probably hard at work on the designs for the next carrier. He'll be invaluable for that since he knew the old one as well as I did." Her shrug was accompanied by a grimace. It still hurt. "Maybe if I get too stir-crazy, I'll solve my own problem and sneak out."

Valini tried to keep the sarcasm from her face and then rummaged in her purse to hold her phone out. "So you mean, if I was to call him right now and mention you are charged with bed rest with nothing to do, he wouldn't appear at that door in under, what, two hours?" She lifted her eyebrows at the idea, adding, "I'd bet you a pudding cup. Either way, I'm sure that Stark could loan him back part time. For science."

Sammy responded with a sigh and turned toward the window. "Uncle Tony would be happy to let him have the time if I needed him. Tim left SHIELD for a reason. The crash was one thing. The funerals were another. It's not fair to keep trying to drag him back when I'm fine and I'll survive this."

She gave Sam a few moments to feel withdrawn, letting the woman mull or fight her emotions. The funeral had been rough, for as large a company as SHIELD was, everyone knew someone. Everyone felt it. "Then you should consider a list of who would you feel comfortable helping you with your, ah, physical therapy once you heal."
