Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Things around here are quickly escalating and getting out of hands. Honestly, I'm surprised the Professors haven't insisted we give up these journals due to the amount of disrespect and derogative language used on a daily basis. Of course, the positives outweigh the negatives; they're great tools for speaking to each other when we all can't be in the same place, so I suppose that's their reasoning behind letting us keep them for now. Either way, I'd advise everyone to use more caution with what is said and viewable so publicly because anyone can read it.

Private to Self
While Ginny and I might be really great friends, there are some things that are extremely awkward to discuss. Harry's sex life (or lack thereof), for example. It's just weird hearing about how he doesn't care to do anything while here at Hogwarts yet Ginny does. While I do know that they're sharing the same bed, hearing such intrinsic details about one of my closest friends just doesn't seem to settle very well.

Perhaps I might have to eventually suggest having the same agreement as Ron and Harry - strictly no relationship details ever. Of course, there are time when I'll likely need her advice since Ginny obviously has more experience, but then it's incredibly awkward because she's with Harry and I'm with Ron, her brother. I'm sure she'd just love to hear any sorts of details I might have in the future about him.

Maybe there's a medium. Where neither of us go into a whole lot of detail, but just brush the surface so the other can get the general idea? I'll have to think on it for awhile. Though maybe not at all since this really is the only time she's brought it up...

Private to Ernie
Do you think there needs to be a Prefects meeting before the end of term and everyone goes home?

I've been using great caution, 'Mione, have you noticed? No detentions or points taken or anything yet! I know, you're proud. What're you up to, love? I miss you.

I have noticed you've been taking the necessary precautions to keep yourself from getting a detention from them or points taken.

At the moment, I'm talking to Ginny and contemplating calling it a night, actually. What are you doing?

Gryffindor's in the lead, I'm not about to mess that up. Plus, detention means less time with you.

You're in bed right now? I just got back from the kitchens. Went to grab a snack after patrolling. Taking points from snotty little brats always makes me hungry!

It also means less time concentrating on other important things too. Not to mention - it also looks bad with you being a prefect. But I am proud of you for keeping your toes in line.

Ron, you can't go about calling them 'snotty little brats.' How is that acting like a Prefect?

You're important! And thank you... it's been tough remembering not to let things slip. I'm not exactly a saint, you know.

They are snotty little brats! Ickle firsties thinking they can talk back to me? They deserve what they get!

I know, but you are trying your best and that's good enough for anyone.

Honestly, you were a first year once before who tried to talk back to the Prefects - your brother most of all! They have names and they don't include the words 'snotty' or 'brats.' Be nice to them, Ron.

It's bloody hard. I'm bound to slip any day now.

But that was my brother! None of these kids are siblings. You think they cared what my name was when they tried cursing me for taking points because they were out after curfew? 'Course they didn't!

Just continue to be careful.

Did you take points for them swearing at you and give them a detention for being rude and disrespectful to a prefect?

2008-03-04 07:41 am UTC (link)
They didn't swear at me, Hermione, they actually tried to curse me with their bloody wands! 'Course I took points and gave 'em detention. Now do you see why I called them snotty little brats?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]athenaspupil
2008-03-04 07:44 am UTC (link)
Well, you didn't make your point clear! They hardly know how to properly use their wands at this point so you wouldn't have been in any immediate danger with whatever they would have tried to throw at you. Hopefully the detention and the loss of house points will teach them a lesson. But still, you shouldn't call them names.

Doesn't matter if they couldn't do much damage, it was still an attempt. Little gits ran off after back to Slytherin.

An attempt, yes, but you took care of it and gave them the required punishment! But again, you're a prefect and should act like one! That doesn't involve calling them names belittling them.

These journals aren't a school tool.... So they couldn't really ban us from using them, could they?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]athenaspupil
2008-03-04 07:19 am UTC (link)
Actually, they could if they really wanted to. As you said, they're not a school tool so they could be put on the list of banded items - kind of like the one Filch has. I, for one, hope it never gets to that point.

Students made the same argument when WWW products were banned as well. And this is a school, so the question of whether or not they're conductive to learning would come up if it ever got to that point.

Well no offense to the Weasley's but WWW products are generally mischievous tools for rebellion. These journal are hardly that - if anything it's a communicative tool that's hardly hurting anyone.

Unless things get out of hand, I agree, which is what I've been saying all along. Though, just like in the corridors and the classrooms, and any public area in the school, a certain modicum of self-restraint should be used at all times when using certain choice words. Especially since the Professors are monitoring our conversations.

So, when we're on holiday - does that mean staff will still be monitoring our actvitity then?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]athenaspupil
2008-03-04 07:50 am UTC (link)
It's likely, especially since they already have access to our journals as it is. Though, I can't imagine them enforcing school rules for those of us who aren't at Hogwarts during our holidays.

Will you find out for sure? You know, for those of us...who might be at home and have access to certain things not available at school that could possibly alter our better judgement?

I've had to take points lately and even from Housemates. It's so depressing, the lack of respect between us all! I think everyone needs a Calming Draught or a Draught of Peace or! Or! Better, we all need Elixir to Induce Euphoria! We could freeze it into frozen lollies with the sprig of peppermint right in it, so not only would you have the happy effects but a fun way to eat it! Wouldn't that be perfect, having an icy while getting the best happy feeling in the world?

[info]athenaspupil

In theory perhaps, but those potions aren't meant to be widely distributed and especially not as lollies. Though, with the Professors being more strict and monitoring more, I think everyone will begin to realise that they're being completely serious about following school rules within our journals.

ooc; zomg this is really long sorry!
[info]smithey
2008-03-04 10:00 pm UTC (link)
Now you see this is my problem with that little aspect. Or rather problems.

1. You say no disrespectful and derogative language at school, but the moment you get outside of school it's basically all you hear. So I figure we might as well get people used to that sort of thing so they don't keel over from a heart attack as soon as they start to hear these things.

2. If we're going to have our journals being taken off for certain things can they be the same things around? People insult me for being a Hufflepuff and they think we're a bunch of pot smoking hippies who do nothing but cuddle all the day. In addition, I take serious offense to that, but they don't get points taken off even thought it's obviously derogative and at school. Moreover, not just Hufflepuffs, everyone insults everyone else at the school based on their house.

3. And then you'd also got to point out what is swearing. It's it telling someone to shut up and bugger off, or something to go fuck something out. Specifics would be nice thank you very much.

4. Then also threatening someone. Crabbe threatened to beat me up simply because I suggested to him that perhaps learning how to read and write would be helpful. And I was being sincere and honest in the way that I did it. It’s an eyesore and it really won’t help him later on in life.

5. What about you and everything you did in your previous years? You got points for them which really isn’t fair. If I did that I’d have detention until the end of the year, or perhaps even expelled. So who cares if you’re saving the world, you’re setting a bad example for the rest of us.

6. Free speech! And no I’m not talking about what those Weasley’s did with the explosions and the like. I’m talking about if I am angry and I want to express that in my journal I can get points docked if I write certain words. But it’s better than going out and punching someone right?

7. Finally, I think some people take points off because they don't like someone or because of their house. Which really isn't fair you know. Because I know I’ve had pointed removed in the past for being a Hufflepuff.

So perhaps we need to rethink these rules before we start taking points off yeah? I mean otherwise it just wouldn't be fair especially if someone got blamed for something that everyone else does as well.

See my points?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

ooc; definitely see the points! no need to apologize either
[info]athenaspupil

First of all, your points are justified and you make some rather interesting arguments. Second, I'll try to address them as well as I can, though some you might want to bring up with the Professors themselves.

I. Concerning Language: In the school handbook, this is laid out perfectly clear so I'd suggest referring to that as well. Any language that is deemed disrespectful and is considered a swear word is not allowed. The teachers have explicitly explained and demonstrated by giving detentions which words are appropriate and which are not. I, however, will not list them for you. I'd suggest taking it up with one of the Professors or even Mr. Filch if you want a complete list.

II. Regarding Threats: It's possible, like in all scenarios, that neither a teacher nor a Prefect sees a threat. My advice is to alert someone afterwards about it so that necessary actions can be taken to rectify the situation and so that the person doing the threatening can be properly punished. It also helps that said threats are written down in these journals - you have written proof in case your point is contested.

III. Saving the World: Though it's not really any of your concern, what Harry, Ron, and I have done in the past is explicitly that - what we did in the past. Now, if you would have preferred the school to be attacked more by a basilisk or for Voldemort to be around then by all means, continue questioning us and what we've done.

IV. Free Speech: Of course, this can't be taken away, but there are limitations to just how freely we can speak in a school. If it becomes a distraction to the learning environment or it doesn't let students feel safe and as if they can be comfortable here, then it will be limited to an extent.

V. Taking Points Unjustly: Prefects know better than to do this and should not take points based on a specific house or anything like that. If this is happening, you need to tell someone - Ernie and I, or even the Professors because that's a serious offense and they could get in a lot of trouble for that.

Aren't you the Head Girl though, i.e the gap between us and the Professors?

1. I hear some prefects saying the exact same words that I do and they don't get points taken away. Does that seem fair to you?

2. Alright then, Crabbe has threatened me on numerous accounts to beat me up. Not to mention he mentioned being sad about not beating someone up, might want to consider looking into that since it's there in big fucking</i> words because the stupid inbred wanker can't write like a normal person.

3. I'm a pureblood, I wouldn't have been affected. I will admit that that time was perhaps justifiable, but what about the other times. It seems that the lot of you just got points out of nowhere for 'saving the world'. Might want to elaborate on that.

4. This journals as far as I was aware had nothing to do with school or the learning environment so why can't I say what I want to say? Isn't oppression what leads into wars?

5. Alright. I know I've had points taken off because I'm a Hufflepuff before, not really, does this mean I get them back now?
