Hunt: Gael and Sim
Who: Professor Alexander Langley, Gael Shaw, and Simon Buford
What: Monster hunting
Where: The forest/swamp surrounding the campus
Rating: SFW

They had already been wandering around for between half an hour and forty-five minutes through the muddy, swampy woods, and so far they had seen neither hide nor hair of anything strange or unusual - just the normal every day critters that hung around in swamps at night. Gael had made sure to charm himself to keep from getting too muddy on top of dressing appropriately for the excursion. It had been mostly slow going with little in the way of conversation, which was understandable as they were supposed to be focusing on trying to find any more creatures like the one who'd attacked his brother.

He tried, however, to keep the personal aspect out of the hunt. After all, the one who had actually attacked his brother was already in the custody of the school. This was in order to prevent future attacks on other students or owls. And who knew if the creatures would move onto other pets, or even outside the school grounds and attack muggles. They had to be on their toes.

Thinking he heard something, though it could just be Sim behind him accidentally stepping in something that snapped, Gael turned to his left, raising his torch above his head. "Hey, did you hear something?"

Sim was bored. Everyone must have been bored, they had seen hide nor hair of any dangerous creatures. It was muddy and cold and it was putting him in a foul mood. He rolled his eyes at Gael and shone his torch in the same direction.

"It's probably just an owl like the other five times this has happened" he griped, though he was looking up into the trees overhead just incase. "No offense Professor Langley, but I thought we were going to be blasting monsters and running around getting decapitated, we haven't seen anything cool!"

"Mr. Buford, as cool as decapitation and blasting monsters may seem to you, that was never the point of this search. Even if we do see anything, we are not to kill it," he said, raising his eyebrows at Sim. "Sorry to disappoint."

Professor Langley inspected the noise and came up with nothing. "Come on gentlemen, much more ground to cover," he said moving on again.

Gael rolled his own eyes at Sim's behavior. What was he, eight? Of course they weren't going to 'blast' the monsters.

With a sigh, he trudged on along after Professor Langley. "Yes, sir." He glanced over at Sim to see if he was going to throw a temper tantrum or something. Picturing the image in his mind he laughed a little, but quickly turned it into a cough.
sim From: [info]sim Date: February 2nd, 2011 01:18 am (UTC) (Link)
"Not as sorry as I am" he mumbled not too quietly. He had thought he'd be paired with Gray or Michi and they would be able to goof off after curfew for a few hours. How was he meant to know there would be teacher chaperones and endless walking?

Disregarding all warnings to be quiet, Sim jabbed Gael in the back with his wand. "How is Leon anyway?"

Alexander shook his head and continued walking deeper into the forest. "Remember to keep down your voices gentlemen," he warned. It had been an uneventful night, these things never work out the way their supposed to, he thought to himself. Of course when they went looking, the creature wouldn't show it's face.

"Just another..." CRACK! Alexander stopped dead in his tracks and motioned for Gael and Sim to join him. He looked for the source of the sound, making sure to put himself between the open woods and his students.

Gael turned to glare over his shoulder at Sim. Had it really been necessary to practically stab him? "He's fine, I guess. Why?" His voice was a hiss. He at least understood the necessity for quiet.

He snapped to attention at the noise though, and immediately went to join Professor Langley, wand at the ready.
sim From: [info]sim Date: February 3rd, 2011 06:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
Now that was an exciting noise. Sim shut his mouth from whatever he was going to say to Gael and removed his wand from the other boy's back, brandishing it more like a weapon than a refined skillful instrument.

If this was an owl, or a cat or even a fucking unicorn, Sim thought he might lose his mind. Standing to the professor's right and slightly behind him he licked his lips excitedly and waited.
crescentcitynpc From: [info]crescentcitynpc Date: February 6th, 2011 02:54 am (UTC) (Link)
Alexander waited patiently, his eyes sweeping back and forth. His eyes sought out the only patch of moonlight where he heard the noise. A huge shadow loomed by. Alexander stood deathly still, watching the shadow until it moved into the moonlight.

The creature was ghastly. With the body of a rotted bigfoot and the head and wings of a rotted horse. It's glowing green eyes stared at the professor and students standing there. "What in the world..." he kept his wand raised, not willing to take any chances and not wanting to provoke the creature.

"Don't provoke it boys," he said stepping forward, toward the creature.

Gael's eyes widened at the creature. What the fuck! He tightened his grip on his wand and, heading the professor's warning, slowly followed his movement, spreading slightly away to the left, fanning out.

"What should we do, Professor?" He kept his voice low and calm, not wanting to startle the creature.
sim From: [info]sim Date: February 6th, 2011 09:22 am (UTC) (Link)
It took Sim longer to find the creature, finally spotting its green eyes which were mesmerising. He took in the rest of the body for a quick second before staring into its eyes again.

"Is that a bat thing?" He asked the professor, lowering his wand slightly.
crescentcitynpc From: [info]crescentcitynpc Date: February 6th, 2011 08:38 pm (UTC) (Link)
"It is most definitely, definitely not a bat thing," Professor Langley said not taking his eyes off the creature. "I have no idea what it is," he said taking another calm step forward. "Maybe we can coax it into coming back with us, it doesn't seem aggressive..." though it is one ugly beast.

The creature lowered it's head toward the three wizards as if it were bowing and fanned out it's wings. It's huge wings started beating and it took off toward the sky. "I'm half tempted to give chase gentlemen," he said looking between his students for their opinion.

Gael watched it as it flew up, but glanced back at the professor when he spoke. "I'm for it." He glanced back at the professor and then at Sim, raising an eyebrow.
sim From: [info]sim Date: February 6th, 2011 09:18 pm (UTC) (Link)
Sim watched it fly away with disappointment, but was filled with a renewed sense of energy at the option to tail it.

"Fine by me" he said with a shrug and broke into a run, making out the creature between tiny gaps in the canopy. Branches were scratching at his face and neck but he was used to it.

"Should we use any spells" he yelled to Professor Langley, wondering if he could get a clear shot through the trees.
crescentcitynpc From: [info]crescentcitynpc Date: February 6th, 2011 09:33 pm (UTC) (Link)
Professor Langley followed after the creature, trying hard to not get trip as he kept his eyes on the creature. "Nothing harmful!" he shouted in response to Sim's question.

The creature was leading them further into the forest, the floor of the forest was getting wetter and heavier, making it harder for them to run quickly. The creature was making a good gap in between his pursuers and himself.

Alexander knew plenty of spells that would stop the creature but he didn't want to harm it. For as terrifying as it looked, it seemed harmless, it was running away, not attacking.

Gael weaved through the trees, trying to avoid tripping over any roots or in any ditches. Of course, it was somewhat difficult, as the ground was uneven and damp and even with the flashlight it was somewhat hard to see when the light was moving everywhere due to his running.

Still, he kept his attention focused on where it was ahead of him and raised his wand, aiming as best he could.

"Stupefy!" He shouted, hoping for the best.
sim From: [info]sim Date: February 6th, 2011 10:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
Sim stumbled over a root, his hands sinking into the mulch and swamp but he was back on his feet quickly and pounding theground. That thing could really move fast for such an ugly motherfucker.

Gael's spell flew past his head and he could feel the air of it, he took aim with his own wand.

"Petrificus Totalus!" He tried, thinking his and Gaels were the safest spells to be shooting off. He wondered in an accio would work but he didn't even know what that thing was. He was worried it would be hurt crashing to the ground.
crescentcitynpc From: [info]crescentcitynpc Date: February 6th, 2011 11:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
Alexander was careful to avoid the spells that flew the night, unfortunately so was the creature. It flew in a zig zag pattern making it harder to get an aim on. He picked up his past, running faster than he had in years, they couldn't let the creature slip away.

"Immobulus!" he shouted, aiming for the weaving creature. He missed and hit the tree. The creature looked over it's shoulder and took of higher into the sky, trying to clear the lower branches of the trees. They were loosing the creature. "Carpe Retractum!" A rope burst from the top of his wand but missed the intended target and fell to the forest floor in front of them, tangling up the way.

Gael swore under his breath when all of their spells missed. He pushed himself harder, running faster after the creature to try and get as close as he could.

He raised his wand higher, keeping it as trained on the creature as possible. In his head, he tried to compensate for where he thought it would be after he cast the spell. "Aresto Momentum!"
sim From: [info]sim Date: February 6th, 2011 11:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
"What does that do" Sim yelled at the other boy, panting heavily. His shoes were full of soggy mud but his adrenaline kept him running.

"Stupefy! Imobulus! Damn..Tarantallegra!" He didn't know why he had used the last spell, perhaps making the creature dance would slow it down or send it to the forest floor? He wasn't thinking clearly, he couldn't even tell if he was aiming in the right direction anymore.
crescentcitynpc From: [info]crescentcitynpc Date: February 7th, 2011 12:40 am (UTC) (Link)
"Dancing?" Professor Langley couldn't help but laugh as he chased after the still weaving creature. He tripped over his own rope, landing hard against the ground. He pushed himself back up quickly, trying to catch up with the creature.

The creature had lead them to the swamp. It flew higher, avoiding spells and took off over the deep muck, leaving it's trailers behind. Alexander half heartedly gave chase another few yards, but he could go no further once he reached the edge of the deep swamp. He watched defeated as the creature disappear into the night.

"Curses," he said resting his hands on his knees. "That thing is fast," he looked around the dark woods. It was eerily quiet now that they weren't crashing through the woods.
mustbecharming From: [info]mustbecharming Date: February 7th, 2011 02:17 am (UTC) (Link)
Gael eventually slowed to a stop just after the professor, when it was clear that the thing wasn't going to be caught. Not tonight anyway.

"Dammit," he muttered, breathing deeply. He sighed, he glanced over at Professor Langley, questioning. "Are we going to try and go after it?"
sim From: [info]sim Date: February 7th, 2011 10:19 am (UTC) (Link)
Sim skidded to a halt once he reached the edge of the swamp and groaned. He was caked in mud and tiny scratches covered any exposed skin.

"Are you crazy" he panted at Gael. "If you want to Artax yourself, be my guest but I'm not going in there!" He was of course, referring to The Neverending Story.
crescentcitynpc From: [info]crescentcitynpc Date: February 10th, 2011 02:22 am (UTC) (Link)
Alexander looked at his students and gave a half hearted sigh, he would let the swear slip for now because he felt the same frustration. "Sorry boys, no one is going after it tonight. We should head back to campus and let the Headmistress know that the woods are home to more than one strange creature," he nodded to Sim and Gael.

"Now, to remember the way we came..." he said looking at the skewed path behind them.
mustbecharming From: [info]mustbecharming Date: February 11th, 2011 06:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
Gael ignored Sim completely, letting out a frustrated sigh at the professor's decision. He glanced back to where he had last seen the creature before turning back to the way they came.

"Well, if we keep walking in the direction we generally came from, we're bound to run into something familiar, right?" Though, to be honest, in the mad dash they'd made after the creature, he wasn't sure he remembered exactly where they had deviated from their original course either...
