Characters: Yevgeni de Kooning and Colby Ayers
Setting: Music room, Wednesday after classes
Rating: SFW
Content: Yev is playing the piano when he spots someone else in there!

Yevgeni had checked around the music room to make sure he was alone before setting himself up at the concert piano. He warmed up with some scales and drills but it didn't take him long before diving into his favorite contemporary piece. He got lost in the music, playing his heart out and barely looking at the keys. Once the song came to an end he leaned back on the bench and sighed contentedly.

Panic gripped his heart when he heard something in the back of the room, a little shuffling, and he turned to the source of the noise, half expecting to see Emilie looming in the doorway.

Colby had gone back to her room after classes to change, hating just sitting or walking around in her uniform. She sat down and did some homework, getting some of the harder stuff out of the way - though she was still avoiding her History of Magic homework. It was just so boring. When she'd gotten most of the rest of it out of the way, she decided it was time to give herself a break by rewarding her hard work with a walk.

She had no destination in particular, opting instead to wander through the buildings and look around. While walking through the main building, she heard music playing and followed her ear to the sound, investigating. Peeking around the door, she saw a boy sitting at the piano. Quietly, she snuck into the room but stayed at the back and listened to him play.

When he finished, she tried to sneak out, not wanting to embarrass him or anything (though she didn't think he had anything to be embarrassed about because he played wonderfully). Unfortunately, her movement caught his attention and she froze.

"Um, hey," she gave him a sheepish grin. "I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to scare you, but I couldn't help stopping to listen. You're great!"

Yev's were still a little big but he couldn't help the gentle blush that crept over his cheeks. "Oh, oh thank you very much," he said trying to not sound so nervous. It wans't really working for him though.

"You liked the piece?" he asked running a hand through his already tussled hair. "It's a French contemporary piece by Yann Tiersen called Comptine d'un autre ete: L'apres midi," he explained.

Colby gave him a wide smile. "You're welcome!" She bit her lip to hide back a giggle of nervousness at his nervousness. She hadn't meant to get caught...

"It was really pretty," she said with a vigorous nod. Worrying the inside of her lip, she tried to translate even just one of those words but it had been too long since she'd thought about Spanish at all enough to attempt. "What's it mean?"

Yev was so bad at this, he could feel his palms sweating already, he wiped his hands on the legs of his pants and grinned nervously.

"Thank you," he repeated himself. "Uh... it translates loosely to Nursery rhyme of another summer: Afternoon" he said remembering a bit of French from his brief foray into the language. "It's my favorite contemporary song, I usually stick to classical," he admitted.

"Uh... what is your name? Do you want to come in and uh... sit for a while?" he asked awkwardly.

Colby fought back a grin when he thanked her a second time. She didn't think teasing him would be the best idea right now, probably best to wait until they knew each other a bit better.

"It has a kind of classical sound to it, though." Her voice was slightly questioning. She really didn't know that much about music, so she couldn't say for sure.

"You sure I wouldn't be intruding? I didn't want to interrupt your playing or anything..." Still, she stepped a little further into the room with a smile. "My name's Colby, what's yours?"

"It does!" he said excitedly. "That is why I like it so much," he couldn't help but get a little excited and then blushed a bit at his enthusiasm.

"You are not intruding at all," he said kindly. "I was just bored," he smiled. "I'm Yev," he introduced himself. i'm getting batter at this, he thought to himself as the blonde took a step further into the room.

She giggled a little at how animated he got. She got the same way when she talked about surfing and home. "I won't judge you 'cause it's not classical," she grinned at him.

"Nice to meet you, Yev," she beamed. "Do you play any other instruments besides the piano?"

He smiled back, he couldn't help but feel comforted by that little reassurance. "Fair enough," he said brightly.

"It is very nice to meet you too Colby," he said genuinely happy to have meet someone who seemed so nice. "It is just the piano for me," he admitted. "Though I would like to learn another instrument very much," he said. "Do you play?" he asked, his eyes getting big.

Colby shook her head. "Nope, it was always sports and stuff in my family. I can play pretty much any sport, but I don't know anything about playing an instrument. It'd be cool to learn though, probably." She smiled again. "What else would you wanna learn?"
yevgeni From: [info]yevgeni Date: February 11th, 2011 05:13 pm (UTC) (Link)
"Anything," he said smiling. "Perhaps the cello, it is always overlooked for the violin," he said thoughtfully. "But it sounds so lovely when given the chance to actually play and act as more than a bass line," he explained.

"I can not play sports though I have been promised tae kwon do lessons," he grinned. "I have terrible balance and I am very clumsy."

She grinned back at him. "Sounds like you've given it a lot of thought. My brother Shane played guitar in this band when he was in high school, but they weren't that good," she admitted with a sheepish smile.

"That'll be awesome though," she enthused. "And it'd definitely help with the balance and everything. I only know a little bit of karate type stuff from my brothers, but I took gymnastics as a kid." She blushed slightly when she realized she was babbling. "But anyway, you can't be too clumsy if you play piano so well."

He beamed. "I have given it some thought, I just never put it to practice," he said rubbing the back of his head.

He couldn't help the bright red flush that crept into his cheeks. "Oh, thank you," he stuffed his hands in his pockets. He was not used to compliments at all. Most of his life he was being told he was not good enough, he was useless... he had to admit, it was a nice change of pace. "Wow! Gymnastics? That takes a lot of discipline," he said his eyes wide. "In Russia it is very much a life time career for the best," he said nodding.
