Marie Claire had run out of options.

The day after her arrival in this strange, hostile version of reality she had discovered that her dimension-jumping device was damaged.  A setback to be sure, but she was confident that it was something that she could simply fix--maybe pop the case open and reconnect a few wires before soldering it all together and heading home.  That proved to be a futile hope rather quickly and now, some months later, she was still unable to fix the device.  With Stevie's birthday having just passed the need to get home again had become even more reinforced; Not-The-Mama was bonding to Stevie while she, a girl used to a close relationship with her parents, had never felt more unwanted and alone.

It was a sobering feeling, as was the realization that she wasn't going to be able to fix this on her own.  Marie Claire realized she was going to have to go to the source of sorts: she was going to have to contact Hank Pym.  It was something she wasn't sure she wanted to do.  The shock of her parents not overcoming their challenges in this dimension was still fresh and raw on top of that was the discovery of a sister through the paternal line.  Certainly she knew of the sister she had through Jan, but Vernique wasn't present and even if she had been she sounded much like herself.  Chris...was a different animal entirely.  Pun intended.  But, getting home was important, more important than odd feelings and sad thoughts and fears so she gathered up her device and its parts and descended upon the lab of one Hank Pym.

She hoped the man didn't have a heart attack when he met her.  She did, after all, look exactly like her mother had at the same age.

He is was honest with himself, Hank would be the first to admit that he didn't get out as much as he should have these days. He saw his daughter, he occasionally did a little science work for the Avengers, he got dragged to the Stark Charity events, but most of the time, he spent in his lab, probing the frontiers of science.

He vaguely remembered something about a message from Avengers Mansion saying he would have a visitor today, at least he thought it was today.

He was working in the high security wing of the lab complex today, when his security system showed him there was someone waiting outside. He looked up, rubbed his eyes, and looked again. "...I don't remember inventing a time machine," he muttered.

He activated the intercom. "Um... hello?"

"Hi." Pause. "I'm Marie Claire Pym and I would like to speak with you. Please."

Hank was somewhat aware that more extra dimensional girls had showed up recently, but he'd filed that under relatively unimportant information at the time.

But she'd said... "Pym"? And she looked like...

"Ooooh boy," he said, quietly. He spoke up so he could be heard. "Um... sure. I'll buzz you in."

He activated the door for her.

"Thanks."

She waited for the door to make the requisite clicking noises as it unlatched and then walked inside, winding her way to the Hank. The place was, a little surprisingly, the place was pretty much exactly like her dad's.

"Um. Hi."

Hank let out an involuntary gasp of breath. She looked so much like Jan it was more than a little heartbreaking.

"...Hi," he managed at last. "Marie, was it?"

"Marie Claire, sir. Um, family and friends call me MC." She looked away a little. "So, you're, uh, Chris' dad. I hope Mrs. Pym doesn't mind that I've stopped by. I promise not to be here long."

Mrs. Pym. The words almost tasted foul.

Hank nodded. "All right, Mc. But don't worry. There's no "Mrs. Pym." Chris's mother and I aren't together. Not in any real sense of the word."

"Ohthankgod...I mean...um, good. So that I won't upset anyone because that's really not why I'm here. I'm here with technology." She held out the little bundle in her hands.

Hank frowned a little, but decided not to press the issue. He and Greer had been... good, but they just weren't good together.

He took a look at the device, taking it from her hands. "A dimensional transition device," he said. "Did you build this?"

"I did! It worked great, too, until I kind of crash landed in a tree. Now the thing won't work. At all."

Hank smiled in recognition of her accomplishment. "Impressive work," he said.

"And I'm guessing you've tried rebooting the phase distortion capacitors?"

"Yes. I also attempted to rewire the particle disruptor by going through the stabilizing mechanism to try to lighten the powerload in the circuit. I'm not getting anything, though the motherboard in and of itself seems to be fine. I tested it on a computer and it ran seamlessly, albeit at a slight lag, which is to be expected given the differences in connectors."

Hank frowned at that. "What's it use for a power source?"

She looked away.

"Nine volt battery. It was the best I could do in a pinch. And if you so much as suggest zero-point energy I will throttle you, pseudo Dad or not."

Hank shook his head. "Wasn't about to. I've not really studied the technology enough to say how well it would work anyway."

He considers. "Could probably use one of Reed's nacell units... maybe with a vibranium core..."

"...I don't know why didn't think of that! Yes! The vibranium core would evenly power all the components at once!"

MC was suddenly very giddy and grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil before furiously sketching away at a revamped design.

"I'd have to rebuild the circuitry but...that shouldn't take very long."

MC's excitement brought a smile to Hank's face.

"Consider my lab yours. Whatever you need to built it."

"The road not taken," Hank says, finishing the sentence. He knows that part of his life is long over, but he can't help but ask.

"What... what happened differently where you're from?"

"My parents sat down and talked the Incident out. I think they went to counseling briefly as well. I know Dad did. It was a tense time, by all accounts. They spent time apart while they worked things out, but I think getting things resolved was always the goal.

"I don't really know more than that. My parents are very happy people, very glad to be together."

Hank nods at that. It made sense to him.
