Fluff meme: Cooking is a science!
Cooking she could do, other people putting in all that effort and cooking for her? She couldn't do. Which was exactly why when Aleks proposed this dinner thing she'd already planned on coming early to help the moment she agreed.

Well, okay, she'd avoid having to cut any onions but she was still handy in the kitchen. Besides, regardless of what people said, cooking was a science. And she was a scientist.

"Hi. Now I know the fact I brought wine may be odd, considering I don't drink it, but I do own some. Fine, I use it only for cooking, but still. Classic guest-gift and it works with the whole cooking dinner thing you've got going," she rambles once he opens the door. Lena would admit to some slight nervousness. Not willingly, but still it had to count for something.

"There aren't too many people who work on gamma radiation affected physiology, good thing they found someone to help you quickly. So was SHIELD agent something you wanted to do for a long time? Or you just fell into it because of your dad's work?"

"I wanted to be useful, and discovered that I wasn't very good at settling down. They had the tech, my dad contracted for them, so I had the contacts, and they really needed more heavies. It was a good fit, once I discovered I could keep up the scholastic work I'd started on and still work with SHIELD."

"'Still work with'? Oh come on, like I don't know that," she teased with a playful nudge. "Sounds like a dream job pretty much. SHIELD can certainly be that."

"Oh, it is. I love the job, and I'm good at it. But given the risks, and the gamma... stuff... and for my own sake, I wanted to get my doctorates. Once I was sure that was still possible, just slowed down, I was happy to sign on."

"What am I on? 6 questions down? Darn just those two brought it to 8," she chuckles. "Fine, number 9 then is the age old grad school question: When are you going to graduate?"

"That's a good question. Taking a lot longer than the standard, but I probably have two years to go."

She just rolled her eyes. "Most people take longer than what is considered standard on paper. It's like a running gag almost, those predicted graduation dates." Okay fine she'd finished faster but that was the exception to the rule. Plus, she didn't have agent work to do while doing it too. "I won't ask the dreaded question of how's the thesis going, but if you need someone to do a read through to look for stupid mistakes I'm sure I could."

"Number 10. When you get your doctorates are you going to be called Agent Childress or Doctor Childress? Or Agent Doctor Childress? These are important matters for the admin people you know."

"Oh yeah, not worried about it. I knew it would take a while. As for the thesis, well, since I'm working on two doctorates at the same time... I'll definitely have you look over the physical sciences work. And I'll be Agent Childress so long as I'm doing primarily agent work. When I retire from that, maybe switch over."

"The psych stuff would be interesting too to go over, don't worry. I do grammar checks too." Even with all the talking she'd finished her generous helping of chicken, it had been really good. "Question 11: Where did you learn to cook? Because this is really good. And garlicky."

"You'll be welcome to look over that too, see what you think. As for cooking, I learned early. One of my mother's friends in the Russian mob used a restaurant as a money laundering front. It may have been a mob business, but he took the food side very, very seriously. Since my mom and godfather were out all the time, I kept up with it."

"Well looks like something good came of that at least. I'm guessing you don't have as much time as you used to for it though? I haven't cooked in forever, not that I don't know how. It's a basic skill and all."

"I thoroughly appreciate it. If the lack of any chicken left is any indication," she smiles. "I just don't have time to go home and make anything and in the mornings I prefer sleep over breakfast. Breakfast isn't a meal in my life."

"So what's your favourite dish? Or ingredient. I admitted my not-so-secret love of garlic."

"That's a toss up between what you just ate, definitely my favorite if I'm cooking, or a really good bacon cheeseburger with onion rings and good beer." Yes, he still has to specify good beer.

"Glad you're liking it. As you saw, its actually pretty easy. Basically Russian fried chicken."

"I do know a place that has really good burgers. It's like a hole in the wall but really, I could care less since they put the money into the food." She eyed an extra piece of chicken on his plate and contemplated making a go for it. "A good beer with everything? I'm sure you have a good stock just for that."

He pushes it closer to her, and goes back to the oven to get them both another piece. "Works best in good sized batches, there's plenty. And... alright, sounds like a good second date, you can show me this place. Nothing wrong with holes in the wall... for burgers or Mexican, they're often a lot better than the big, fancy places. As for beer... yeah. I try to keep some imports in stock. Want one that goes well with chicken and garlic?"

When he turns away she swipes the small piece and when he turns back she tries to look innocent. There was never any chicken on that plate clearly.

"I find the best burgers are the tiny places nobody has ever heard of. The bonus is that there's usually lower prices and less of a line. Deal, I'll show you it next time. And while I'm not a beer person I'd certainly be up for trying one you'd recommend."

He brings her another piece of chicken, and another for himself as well. Having a big appetite, in his case, shouldn't be too surprising. He also fetches two beers, popping the tops with his fingers.

"This is a Belgian honey ale. Fairly rich, but should go well with the chicken."

She thanks him and takes a bottle, reading the label curiously. "I'm always up for new alcohol, let's see what this one's like. Cheers."

He raises his bottle as well, and drinks. Its rich, with some sweetness to it, and definitely fairly strong compared to most American brews.

"As I get stuff in, I'll be happy to share and let you try new things."

She follows suit and is surprised by the sweetness. Even though she knew there'd be honey, she still somewhat expected more bitterness than she got. Though she likes that it has more strength to it than most brews she's sampled.

"Definitely one of the better ones I've had. I don't think I'll ever be a connoisseur but I'll certainly try something new. If I can't trust your taste in beers, whose can I trust?"

"Maybe you'll make me like beer," she chuckled. "For now I'm still in the mixed and shots camp. Though I detest sambuca. Anything you won't drink?"

"I'll do my best. But... yeah. Lot of things, really. I may be all good with cheap food, but I admit to being a snob about my beer and coffee. When it comes to mixed, though... technically I'll drink about whatever, I just usually don't. When alcohol doesn't do anything, most hard liquor loses at least part of its point."

"As much as I'm a coffee snob, I'll get desperate enough to drink the foulest of it too. Caffeine Addicts Anonymous, it could have a whole chapter in each SHIELD base. And knowing how your metabolism works, that makes sense. At least between the two of us there's always some special we can take advantage of. Though I still vastly prefer my caffeine."

"Hmm, I've still got a few questions left of my twenty so, now this is important, what's the best coffee you've ever had? And worst?"
