Training (cont'd)
(continuation thread from this due to code breaking awesomeness: http://www.scribbld.com/community/marvel_year_one/6421.html )

Good, this was turning into a more even competition with the girls getting the hang of it. The boys had good plans but with Annamarie's precision at this sort of prediction and Kitty getting more comfortable with phasing...now they were really challenging each other.

Perfect.

Because if they were this good against each other, put them all on the same team later and...she really had put together a class with excellent potential. A slightly smug, yet proud smile reached her lips as she watched the proceedings. Yes, she had done this well.

Emma sat back and just listened in, letting them go through with their plans without interruption right now.

After helping Kitty walk to the kitchen to clean up (teleporting her when she was shaky and already puking seemed a bad idea), Kurt kept to the side to give her some privacy while she settled herself. Spying the kettle gave him the idea to make some tea, since Madame always said ginger tea was good for stomachs. While he was waiting for it to boil, well Kitty just lost her last meal and needed to eat, and hey weren't they all hungry after all that working out, right? He was. So he fished cold cuts and bread from the fridge to assemble some sandwiches, stacking them and some crackers neatly next to a large teapot of black tea on a tray. "Okay, this is ready, so I'll head off. Take your time," he called out once everything was ready and left for the lounge.

The others seemed to have Kitty well in hand, and Calvin is extremely interested in hearing about the review on training. He knows he messed up quite a few times. His precision isn't as good as anyone else's with their powers, but its not for lack of effort or willingness to practice.

Still testing his powers, instead of taking a chair, he's on the wall, in what would be a kneeling pose if he were on the ground, but it lets him keep his feet flat to the wall, clinging there quite comfortably.

His thoughts are easy enough to read - limitless possibilities.

Kitty still looked just a little green around the gills, but much better than she had been even a few minutes ago.

Deep breaths and the occasional sip of tea now that she was cleaned up were helping.

"...I had no idea I could do that. I am so sorry..."

"It's okay, Kitty." Annamarie says quietly. "That's why we're doing this stuff now and not when there's five men with AR-15s on the front lawn. We get the screwing up done fast, while it can be fixed."

She frowns. "Like I need to let the numbers go further. I should have given myself more chance to see it happening."

Kurt handed over some sandwiches, holding his teacup with his tail. "She's right, Kitty. You didn't know and now we do. Except for your lunch, everything was fine." Smiling his best reassuring smile, he nodded. "Trust me, I made some big messes when learning to bamf around. And-" He waved his tail, not sloshing his drink. "that got caught in so many doors. Practice, practice."

"You were doing fine, we missed a few shots when tagging Kitty, after all," he added.

A brief scan of all their minds once they all arrive, and Emma has a good idea of their general mood. The talk is good though, especially since their starting it. She can read minds, but things are so much easier when the topic brings the thoughts you're interested in hearing to the fore.

After letting them start talking a bit, she finally cuts in, raising a hand to indicate a stop. "First. Kitty, stop with this apologetic nonsense. Of all the things to apologize for, never apologize for your potential or what you are capable of." She turned to the others. "That applies to all of you. We are who we are, we are powerful, and capable of great things. Never apologize for it, never let others trample you because of it, you are better than them. Understood?"

She doesn't expect a vocal confirmation, they'll pick up quickly that around here, a mental one is just as good with her.

But she doesn't let that stop the conversation long, she plows straight through to the other points. "It's a balance, letting the numbers go further or sacrificing that for speed. Obviously speed or details is a judgement call that need be made on a case to case basis. We'll work on it, but I want to see some situations first of you letting the numbers go further, see how far they go. But in this case it was balancing that you needed to work on, multitasking."

"Kurt darling, you have a natural taste for flair." The tone itself suggests it's a compliment, especially given that this was coming from...well, Emma Frost. A woman who strutted into a circus in expensive all white attire, the cost of which could buy a good deal of the circus itself, was certainly not one to say flair was bad, no, that'd be ridiculous. "But there is flair and then there is the line to foolishness. Know your abilities and your level of confidence, but always keep a handle on what your opponent's abilities are. Keep a better tab on that...and you won't be missing any shots when tagging Kitty."

And, because it's a matter of principle, she sighs. "And Kurt, really, you needn't make these things. I do have far better fare catered for my students for reasons."

Since Calvin hasn't spoken up yet, at least not verbally, she turns to him. "What about you, what do you think you need to work on?" Let him bring it up, it'd make him take criticism better according to what his files had implied.

"Precision and using abilities in concert." he replies without hesitation. He's put some thought into this, apparently.

"But I have an idea for that. Kitty, Kurt - think we can work out some one on one practice time? I can learn some of the tricks you guys know and work on learning from someone who is better than I am with them, and you guys can have a practice partner who can do some of the same things, so if there's something you want to work on, we can work on it together? That goes for anyone, really. I want to help out."

Annnamarie just listens to this and nods. Although what's soon at the immediate forefront of her brain is a recipe.
Not because she isn't paying attention. Quite the opposite.

Kurt approved of flair, very much so, and he smiled a little. She concluded though that he should be more wary of entering into a fight without totally knowing the other side, which he supposed he needed work on. Looking down at his snack, he nodded that he knew there was a chef but he had been hungry now and eating in front of others was rude. "Keeping up with self-reliance?" he guessed and knew that wouldn't fly. "Sorry."

Calvin asked about practice and he considered before nodding. "I'd like a partner to work with. And Annamarie can practice too with predicting our moves?" he offered.

She let them work out some practice and talk on their own there, it was a good thing, showed they were interested and had initiative.

"Good, we'll use that to test some of your powers more. Like Kitty's ability to phase others, and to see if two people both phased can interact." That was an acknowledgement of Cavlin's initial rescue plan, it wasn't a bad theory, that just hadn't been the time to test it. But another time in a safer environment she did want to see what would happen.

The raised eyebrow at Kurt's 'self-reliance' then turned to Annamarie for recipe reasons. Though it wasn't a disapproving sort of eyebrow raise, more vaguely curious. But no verbal comment.

"Now, we have an idea of what you each need to work on, and some plans for how to do so. Question period then I suppose. As usual, keep the inane and stupid ones quiet and at the very back of your mind."

Kitty frowned. "Ah, maybe I missed one of the memos, but some of this is seeming a lot more... boot campy than I expected. I mean, I will be really glad not to have to worry about falling through the floor or anything, but...?"

Though she tried to clamp down on it, the thought came unbidden. Just what are you preparing us for?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]coldestfrost

A cool look and raised eyebrow for Kitty. "Hardly 'boot campy' seeing as how you're all waking up at decent not ungodly hours and I certainly won't be stooping to spraying spittle over you all and making you run endlessly in circles at the merest provocation. You have all the normal classes anyone your age does, the only significant changes I've made are that instead of gym class I've been teaching you power control. And the surest way of doing that quickly, is through a sense of danger. Though in this case the danger only was being bumped into by the boys."

"The only thing I'm preparing you for is the world out there. You may not have experienced it Katherine, but your classmates can tell you just as easily that this isn't a kind world to mutants. And if the difference between you being mobbed for phasing through a floor in full view of everyone and being able to control what you do to use it to your advantage is a few 'boot campy' sessions, then that's what will be done.

But of course, if you'd prefer mindless circle running instead that will be simplicity itself to arrange."

She looked over the others. "Anyone else? Questions or running preferences."

Annamarie knows that of course Kitty did not mean to be a privileged jerk.

"Like Ah said before," she said, her accent showing more than usual. "Better we get all the mistakes done now when there aint anybody with an AR-15 on the lawn."

But part of her mind is still cataloguing how many parts coffee per haow many parts chocolate... and actually, if Emma knows anything about how recipes of such materials work, Annamarie's thoughts are sounding less 'unhealthy' and more 'unsafe.'

Kurt looked up from his sandwich in confusion, looking at the other for confirmation. This was boot camp? They were doing boot camp-like things? With an on-call chef and television? He watched Emma and Kitty, how the tension in the room had shifted from before to something colder. When Emma mentioned the world's attitude towards mutants, he himself went still to keep from flinching at the insinuation. No matter what they could do, everyone else's powers were invisible.

His sister spoke up, and he nodded at her addition to the conversation, but didn't really feel like asking anything in particular.

Calvin has seen some of the ways the world can treat people. Now that the mutant situation has hit home, the idea that it could only get worse is no shock.

And if this is going to be powers-training-boot camp... so be it. He has seen the potential of these powers, and he wants to learn. And he wants to learn it Emma's way. She seems to know what she's doing so much better than any other authority he's run into.

"We just have to look out for each other. I'll help with any training things I can."

Emma, at least, has definitely figured out motivating one of these kids.

Kitty felt her cheeks redden a bit, and slunk down in her chair. Before this, the worst she'd ever had to deal with was maybe getting a B+ on a test. Heck, if anything, she'd caught more flak for being Jewish. Not that anyone besides the people here knew she was a mutant. But it's not like it was something she had to tell people either.

Privilege. Huh.

"Ah... I'd just as soon skip the running, thanks," she said, trying to get some control over her mouth.

Guys on the lawn with guns? What the heck have I gotten myself into...?

Annamarie sees Kurt flinch and reaches for his hand tentatively, since even with her gloves on she doesn't want to make any sudden moves.

Things that will make her brother more comfortable and happy are silently added to the analysis agenda for tonight.

There are a lot of thoughts coming through, many need to be addressed eventually, but she preferred it this way. Better to have something prompt these things to the surface than have to try and dig, it told her so much more.

"Good, let's not stoop to running and other such boot-camp idiocy."

A slight breath out and she looked over all of them again, taking in all those concerns mention of mutant issues brought up. It had to be said, and they had to face the truth of it, though most already had. "I will say it again, they think this world belongs to them, that mutants have no place in it. They are wrong, fearful, small-minded and cowardly." Some of that cold anger shows through there. "We do have a place. All of us." But she looks pointedly at Kurt. "And I will make sure you all come to realize it." It's Kurt that's still getting the look, because she can hear those thoughts, but visible powers or no, she was saying that he wasn't being left behind, he had potential for greatness too. Emma Frost did not pick subpar students.

And because apparently this needed clarifying and reassurances... "As for people on lawns...you are all my students, which means you are under my protection. If any unwelcome visitors should decide to come, I will deal with them. Personally." And that Frost will shined through there. The sort that helped her father so ruthlessly crush his enemies, family included. The same Frost will that had Emma cut all ties with him years ago and pull herself up from nearly nothing to great heights of success. No, when a Frost wanted or decided something, it happened.

Mission statement said, of all the subject changes to pick, perhaps this was a bit odd and one of those ones where it felt like you were dropped into the middle of something with no context but...that was telepaths for you. "Annamarie darling, we really do have cookbooks if you need referencing." She might not cook, but there was such thing as common sense

Yes, ma'am. Apparently Kurt needed to work on his poker face, too. And brain. He needed a poker brain. He squeezed Anna Marie's fingers in return and smiled when she took his hand, but looked slightly embarrassed at getting caught by both of them.

"Calvin's right. We can look out for each other, help us get better," he offered to help the mood. He had liked thinking this school was all there was to the world, but they had to be realistic. Emma couldn't save them from everything, even with all of her powers and will. "We're in school to learn, ja?"

For as much as additional talking in her head isn't particularly Annamarie's thing, she doesn't have much objection to the listening. "This stuff ain't in cookbooks, Ma'am. I can handle it." And then she can do all the practice she needs, because she won't have to sleep for a while.

Just what had she gotten herself into...? Kitty didn't want to save the world. She just wanted control over her powers.

But how selfish was that? Especially when she could tell just how much being a mutant had contributed to the others being... damaged goods? Ugh. So not the right way to think about it. But life had dealt all three of them way more harsh cards than she had.

But did that make it her responsibility to save everybody? She'd be fine just riding beneath the radar.

"Here to learn," she agreed.

Calvin is all too familiar with the real world. Emma had brought him out of a bad place, and he'd never seen any better options til now. Emma and Annamarie are doing a good job convincing Calvin of the 'in this together' thing in the meanwhille.

A thin amused smile appeared on her face, and the briefest or derisive chuckles. It's not at Annemarie, though it may certainly seem like it, but really....saving the world? What ideas this girl had...

Oh no darling, I may get lofty at times but I'm not some boundlessly optimistic and purely altruistic fool. You don't need to worry about saving the world. If I was to decide to try saving mutantkind as a whole, I certainly would pick a more efficient and effective method than simply opening a school with five children.

"Wonderful, we have a suitable school motto full of sappy philosophical meaningfulness. All it needs is to be in latin." Though it's said with that dry snark rather than any actual disapproval. Much like Annamarie's recipe plans, it had the important thing. "But at least it has the right sentiment. You're here to learn, and I'm here to teach you. And as I hope this training session has shown, there is certainly a lot to be learnt. If any of you have any specific or personal questions or concerns, you know where my office is, and in the general direction to think loudly in."

"Cooking?" Kurt repealed the term and looked at Anna Marie with interest. That was a topic he could handle.

It seemed like everyone was okay now? Emma thought they were funny, Kitty was squirming, his sister was plotting... But this was normal now? Did they get to a good place after the lesson and apparent discussion of their purpose here? Frankly, it didn't matter; he liked it here and wanted to help everyone, keep them safe. Plus, this'd mean learning to fight as well as trig.

It was easy enough to tell Kitty was still suspicious about something, and that she'd have to keep an eye on the girl, and her thoughts. But the rest seemed like they were settling in well.

"We're done. If any of you need something or to talk about anything individually, you know where my office is." She considered that the end of it and stood up from leaning against the desk and made her way off with the usual Frost strut.
