And as Tess lets that feeling sink in, she has to fight against trembling. ...Not entirely successfully.

And he will do his best to not abuse that trust. In fact, there's a definite degree of the opposite - something inherent to his evil plans that may help inspire and build trust further... he's going to make her play out her plan... play her fantasy, as she's seen it in her head, in the order and position she dictated... no matter what she tries to do meanwhile.
