Test Scene
Jensen, or Hannah James as the carefully forged documentation she had provided upon her hire indicated her to be, settled in at work.  Mondays were always the busiest of days with patients calling for appointments after having had a weekend between them and normal health.  Most of the time it was nothing, but sometimes it was something so she couldn't blame them.  What she could blame, however, was that the usual receptionist was chronically not in on Mondays, leaving Hannah to man the front and do her usual job of handling the delicate dance of patient information and insurance coverage.

This was going to be a two pot of coffee and hour of I Can Has Cheezburger kind of day.  Mercifully, Joanne would catch the phone.  Hannah just had to catch the people coming in.

Cake.  She sat down at the desk, surreptitiously using a cable to plug into the computer she would be working on today.  It was just so she could get inside.  She'd disconnect quickly enough, once she had an understanding of the system.  The office updated things so haphazardly... A few seconds and she was done and on the job like a "normal" person, the doors open as the day began--complete with the phone going bonkers.

"Ah.  Monday."

Justin Rhodes enters the office at 10:15 am for his 10:30 am appointment. Justin is not fond of hospitals, infirmaries or their like, but this has to be done. He needs to know if there's a chance his heart will get better or if he's going to have to go with Plan B.

He walks up to the woman at the desk and smiles.

"Good morning. My name is Justin Rhodes and I have an appointment at ten-thirty. I know I'm early, but I didn't want to be late." he says.

"Ah, hello Mr. Rhodes." Hannah looked up and smiled at him while she ran through the information she had on hand.

"Here to see Dr. Hammond? We just got your files this morning and we're still processing them. What were you being seen for?"

Well, they'd gotten them Friday. But no one had processed them.

"Yes, Doctor Hammond was the person I spoke with. I have a heart condition." Justin says, not really wanting to elaborate as the details bore people and get him looks of pity, which is the last thing he wants.

"Should I go ahead and sit down or do I need to reschedule?" he asks.

"Oh, no. You're fine. I just need your insurance card and ID for records." She smiled at him. "You're on the book and things will be fine. Just want to do things up right."

As she spoke to him, she mentally ran his files, making sure that indicated his condition--cardiomyopathy--in bold on his doctor's form.

"Oh yeah, good point." Justin says, taking out his wallet and handing over his ID card and insurance card.

He'd just remembered to change his address to reflect that he was still staying at Misha's place, though he stayed at Tina's just as often.

He hopes it's updated in the computer systems.

"Thanks," she said taking the cards, and almost immediately Hannah blinked, frowned, made a few keystrokes and then leaned a little closer to the screen before motioning for Justin to lean down.

"Mr. Rhodes, Wilcott Avenue doesn't exist. I'll remove the entry from the network but if you have it anywhere else, you might want to correct it ASAP."

There was something of a knowing in her eyes. She'd made the same error herself.

"Oh, that's a mistake. It should be Wilcox Avenue." Justin says. "I wrote it incorrectly the first time I put it on my papers." he lies.

How could she possibly know that? Justin hadn't noticed that Wilcott Avenue didn't exist in New York until recently, after someone else pointed it out to him the other day. There was a /Wilcox/, but not a Wilcott.

"I just moved recently, anyway, so I'm getting my new cards sent to me." Justin says.

"Be careful with that," she cautioned as she handed him back his cards. "As I said, I've deleted it from the network but you may want to cover your tracks."

Hannah noticed as she held out his cards to him that she hadn't pulled her sleeve back down all the way. The USB port on her wrist was visible.

Justin takes his cards and is about to go sit down when he notices the USB port on the woman's wrist. He may only get a brief look at it, but it was no longer a mystery on how she'd come across that information.

"Not to be rude, but you might want to take your own advice, miss." Justin says, nodding at her wrist.

"Things like that could get you fired if the wrong people found out." he says.

"Understood."

She drew her arm back, adjusted her sleeve.

"The nurse will call for you when they're ready. Please have a seat."

Hannah looked around and hunched forward a bit to focus on work. She had only been trying to be helpful. A little color rose to her cheeks. Sloppy. She'd been sloppy.

Justin turns to go sit down, but starts to feel bad as he walks away. He didn't mean to so harsh about what he said.

He turns around to go speak to the woman again.

"Miss, I'm sorry. My tone was out of line." Justin says. "I was just a little surprised. I don't normally meet many people...like you. Granted, there are some special people I count among my friends and family--wait, I need to clarify that I don't mean anything bad by 'special'.

In fact, my girlfriend is kind of like you." Justin says.

"Not really, but in a way."

How does your foot taste, Justin? Very good, thank you.

She was surprised that he came back and even more surprised at what he was saying. Internally she tried to analyze his voice for signs of deception and found none.

"I was sloppy. I just didn't want you to get caught in the system." She picked up a pen and scribbled a number on a post-it.

"If you want to talk, this is my number."

Justin didn't expect /that/. He takes the number from "Hannah" and puts it in his pocket.

"Sure, maybe we will." Justin says, going to sit down and think things over.

Hannah went back to work. This was the first time she'd been outed, or outed herself. It was the first time she'd felt actual fear in a long time so as she sat there, part of her brain worked on a new name, a new history, a new everything for herself. If she had to, she could run.

When the nurse calls Justin back, she doesn't look up. She does when he comes back out, though and smiles politely.

When she leaves work that evening, she isn't sure he'll call and half-regrets giving him the number at all.
