The fact that Naruto won't talk to him about that night and what it meant to him makes it so much easier for Neji not to pursue thoughts of what could be. If Naruto isn't capable of advancing, he wants to be what they've always been. Could-have-beens are the least form of tragedy to Neji, so he will be capable of surviving it.

The catch is, Naruto won't even let him do that. It riles him like nothing else, and so when it is bound to come crashing down on them both, Neji might say more than he had ever planned to for the sake of them both. So his utter emotional selflessness might be going nowhere at all, and they could turn out awkward and ruined anyway.

It's pretty scary, that thought, but not scary enough. He still wants to beat sense into you, Naruto. Neji knows, has learned by now that it takes being literal and straightforward with him, and that is something Neji rather dislikes resorting to. So when the day comes that he tells Naruto that you fucked me over royally and I liked it because I like you, it will come with a punch, and other forms of physical abuse. There's steam that needs blowing off, and that's not even of the sexual kind. If Naruto wants him to be honest and true to himself and confess his entire opinion on this whole mess? He will have to pay the price. Hurting him will make Neji feel better about everything.

This is where that shining ray comes in again. Against all odds. Neji believes it will get sorted out. They'll be happy one way or the other. He's getting less and less afraid to force push to come to shove.

But all in all? Neji is very, very attracted to Naruto on all levels, and there are a lot of things he could be talked into doing again if they ever wanted to take that one time anywhere. Not on a friends with benefits level, but. That other possibility he usually doesn't bother with envisioning.

And I am so done now. Mean, my ass.

Why is Neji so adorable. That's so completely unfair. Naruto isn't cute with his stupidity. It's just outright aggravating to incomprehensible levels. I know this for a fact because I have to channel that stupid. [Say something snarky about that and I hunt you down, Jen.] EITHER WAY. If in some other world they were a little less stupid and a little more convenient then all of this wouldn't have taken ten months. Probably only a few seconds for them to sit down and delegate the pro's and con's of fucking your best friend/liking said action.

But then it wouldn't be near as fun. Or complicated. Or frustrating.

And I have so adored playing that out with you all this time. ♥

The 8th can't come soon enough.
