To start off with:

Neji knows that Naruto wants his muffin.

In Naruto's opinion, he's quite sure of it, that's probably just Neji unnecessarily being a bastard.

But he also knows exactly why he didn't get him it, and didn't come over, and that is because he's realized that Naruto needs to learn a thing or two.

But let me roll up my sleeves here and dig for their old, much older history than the current mess.

Once upon a time, there was a hurt and lonely teen, as they happen to come across us so frequently in certain shonen mangas - and when that young man first met Naruto, he instantaeously knew he did not like him. Quite envied him, perhaps, for he didn't know better about this world of the talented and the sore losers and could be himself, instead of living up to expectations. Of course, Neji knew, because what didn't Neji know back then?, that he'd only fall harder once he'd realize his efforts to be recognized had been futile all along. And still. The more you know, the harder it gets to be happy, and even then did Neji question whether the clueless aren't the truly pitiful. Of course, these thoughts completely clashed with his firm opinion, and so he repressed his doubts. Naruto was not at all of importance to him, another among the lowly he'd leave behind as he moved on, rose to the top, where he was destined to end up, after all. Neji didn't care about him until his backtalk got too annoying, too redundant, and he was this close to snapping when he realized that he wanted the point Naruto was making to be true so badly.

Turns out Naruto knew so much better than Neji, and that fact stung like nothing else, not that cracked jaw, or any other injuries inflicted on him during that fight. Since that horrible car crash of Neji's world view, his pride hasn't abandoned him, but it's capable of taking the backseat, where Neji constantly questions thoughts and double-takes. Despite that semi-paranoia of "am I doing the right thing?", Naruto has shown him to depend just a little more on his gut feeling. Having been around him for such a long time, Neji has come to learn how to join rational thought and blatant realism with that little shining ray of optimism so as to not go back to making himself miserable.

If there is a major feeling that Neji has harboured towards the fox kid, it's gratitude. Gay and even more gay as it sounds, Naruto is the one who changed his life, and while Neji's long accepted that Uzumaki doesn't give a flying fuck about being repaid a debt, he's taken to doing whatever is in his might to be there for the other. Whether it's to keep him from hauling his ass straight to jail by beating up one bastard just a little too badly, or to haul him out of jail because he came just a little too late, or whether it's to buy him a goddamn box of cookies with the straightest face you'll ever see when Naruto is on sugar low, it does. Not. Matter.

He likes doing these things, no matter how much he will complain through snark and shunning. By sticking around him, he has come to learn how Naruto ticks, has come to like him, later value their friendship over anything else. That's a biggie. But that's the best example of growing on one another you'll ever see.

Oh, he probably felt plenty ridiculous about how Naruto made him feel at times, just a little more free than he was already aware of, just a little less complicated than he sometimes tends to be. This, multiplied by almost eight years, results in a Better Neji. A more comfortable Neji. And above all, a Neji with freedom in his near grasp. Naruto is the one he dares to do something dangerous with, and while he wants to be his calming voice of reason, if it's any feeling Neji can relate to, Naruto has his back. But he'll do it with style. Something reckless sometimes needs to be done to achieve what's very worth it. That is, among other things, what gave him the strength to push off his family, get the hell out of there and enter this world.

Naruto is a retard, and he'll never doubt that for long enough to make the thought stick, but he has come to forgive him a lot of stupidities, both because he doesn't know what he'd do with himself without that annoying dimwit in his life (and trust him, he's sure there's many of those out there, but which of them is Naruto?) and because there's this one stuck-up fourteen-year-old pretty boy that Neji remembers, who has been forgiven a whole different kind of stupidity by someone who had all right to hate his guts forever. He got kicked to the floor, but he was offered a hand. That's why he was very confident in banning serious grudges from their friendship.

Until about ten months ago, if you will.

This is the point where Neji's thoughts are returned a mess far from rational, and while it is ridiculous how they've been awkward with one another for so long, it was time well-spent sorting and getting himself figured out, because something that simple and complicated at the same time is something someone as stubborn and denial-prone as Neji takes ten months to figure out. Remotely.

Hearing this will make you laugh, but Naruto is also the only person he has ever felt attracted to seriously enough to consider tapping it. Or letting it tap him. Poisitions, schmositions. Perhaps it's because Naruto is the person he has opened up to the most, though others were to follow later, but men and women alike haven't really pinged him. And he would know, his line of work is not exactly lacking in attractive people.

It took him these ten months to figure out that what made him sleep with Naruto can't have been solely physical attraction or looking for a worthy lay. He hates admitting this, because it makes things complicated, more than they already are, but Naruto is probably just who Neji needs in his life.

He's at a point where he's willing to disregard all things physical and mushy if only to return to their friendship, for this whole mancrush thing is only bound to ruin it. He knows, painfully begrudgingly knows that Naruto has too many intimacy issues that are good for one person, and for the longest time, Neji thought he himself was the one too stuck up to figure out what he wants. So while he doesn't know whether he could be wholly happy with it, he would do his best to try. Their friendship, after all, is something he views as more than he could have ever asked for.

The fact that Naruto won't talk to him about that night and what it meant to him makes it so much easier for Neji not to pursue thoughts of what could be. If Naruto isn't capable of advancing, he wants to be what they've always been. Could-have-beens are the least form of tragedy to Neji, so he will be capable of surviving it.

The catch is, Naruto won't even let him do that. It riles him like nothing else, and so when it is bound to come crashing down on them both, Neji might say more than he had ever planned to for the sake of them both. So his utter emotional selflessness might be going nowhere at all, and they could turn out awkward and ruined anyway.

It's pretty scary, that thought, but not scary enough. He still wants to beat sense into you, Naruto. Neji knows, has learned by now that it takes being literal and straightforward with him, and that is something Neji rather dislikes resorting to. So when the day comes that he tells Naruto that you fucked me over royally and I liked it because I like you, it will come with a punch, and other forms of physical abuse. There's steam that needs blowing off, and that's not even of the sexual kind. If Naruto wants him to be honest and true to himself and confess his entire opinion on this whole mess? He will have to pay the price. Hurting him will make Neji feel better about everything.

This is where that shining ray comes in again. Against all odds. Neji believes it will get sorted out. They'll be happy one way or the other. He's getting less and less afraid to force push to come to shove.

But all in all? Neji is very, very attracted to Naruto on all levels, and there are a lot of things he could be talked into doing again if they ever wanted to take that one time anywhere. Not on a friends with benefits level, but. That other possibility he usually doesn't bother with envisioning.

And I am so done now. Mean, my ass.

Why is Neji so adorable. That's so completely unfair. Naruto isn't cute with his stupidity. It's just outright aggravating to incomprehensible levels. I know this for a fact because I have to channel that stupid. [Say something snarky about that and I hunt you down, Jen.] EITHER WAY. If in some other world they were a little less stupid and a little more convenient then all of this wouldn't have taken ten months. Probably only a few seconds for them to sit down and delegate the pro's and con's of fucking your best friend/liking said action.

But then it wouldn't be near as fun. Or complicated. Or frustrating.

And I have so adored playing that out with you all this time. ♥

The 8th can't come soon enough.

The short answer: Yes.

The long answer: Not enough of it to make people think you're rivalling Sir Elton John's fashion sense. Lavender is a colour that will always, always look good on a pretty woman and always look like a bit of overkill on a pretty man. Therefore, Neji himself would only pick accessories, at best the inside lining of a jacket or shoes in that colour.

It's something really nice to toy with when it comes to interior and furnishing, though.

He rarely feels the need to be completely alone. If he needs to think, he does it surrounded by hundreds of strangers strolling in one or the other pedestrian area, dressed considerably normally to provoke a minimal amount of stares.. If there is something he wants to avoid, he'll travel -- drive, it's still a passion, bad carma aside -- sometimes without a destination, sometimes particularly pretty routes, sometimes only for the sake of speeding. When he does need to go something in particular, he drives up north, to the public cemetery where his father's grave is located. He's very grateful not to have to visit the Hyuuga compound for those instances, since Hizashi refused the family grave.

It's a bit.. scarred, really, but he'll talk to himself, or even to the grave. Lighting incense for it is something that will always calm him, no matter how troubled he is. So really, Neji has come to accept that he doesn't care about looking pathetic, that sort of not!company helps him think clearly, by reminding him of his past, what he's achieved, and what is yet to come. He owes his father being a reasonable son.

Honestly, all obsession with cars and tea sets aside?

His piano. It was the first thing he bought from his own paycheck once he moved away from the Hyuugas, and it gave him a great feeling of liberty and relief. The two reasons he keeps it in his bedroom are that waking up to the sight of it gives his sometimes rather redundant-feeling days a bit of a meaningful twist. The second is being able to look out the big ceiling window while playing, which is something he enjoys and feels he doesn't do enough these days.
